The Final Chapter
13/12
I woke up on the sleeper train and bought coffee from one of the sellers that walk up and down the carriage. I had some sweet red bean buns for breakfast and enjoyed the views from the train on my way into Bangkok for the last time.
It occurred to me that back in May when I passed the same shacks at the side of the train tracks, I felt sorry for the people that lived in such terrible conditions. This time around I just saw normal homes and people who were just going about their daily lives.
I got into Bangkok Hualamphong at 9am and got a taxi to my hostel. I’ve stayed in great hostels in Bangkok before but still like to try a new one so I got my taxi to KhaoSan Immjai. I couldn’t check in until 2pm so I left my bags and went for a walk to get a second breakfast and do some shopping.
I had been telling all my friends that I was flying home on the 20th December as I wanted to surprise them so I was keeping schtum about the fact that I was in Bangkok. I walked about doing some last minute present buying then checked in at my hostel. It was yet another great hostel and my dorm was lovely. I immediately got chatting to a girl called Sharon who had been teaching in rural Cambodia for four months and was off home to Holland the next day. I spent the afternoon in the dorm watching the final four episodes of Breaking Bad (probably the best TV series I’ve ever watched!!) then Sharon and I went to do some more shopping and she knew a great Israeli café so as we were both quite sick of Asian food we had a great dinner of falafels, pittas, babaganoush and hummus.
14/12
Sharon left really early that morning so I had said goodbye the night before. I decided to visit the weekend market. Every time I’d been to Bangkok it had been on a weekday so I’d never had the chance to see the big weekend market before. I got the local bus there which was fairly easy to figure out and I got there quite early and had a coffee as the stalls were opening. It was a good place for me to get some more presents as a lot of the goods were the same as I had seen all over Thailand but at a cheaper price. I managed to explore the maze of stalls, buy some presents, gawp at the puppies and bunnies for sale and meet the fluffiest dog ever!
As the market was getting ridiculously busy at about lunchtime I was ready to leave so after a banana roti I got a taxi back to my hostel.
I spent the rest of the afternoon doing the last of my shopping and treating myself to a mani/pedi whilst I could still afford it!
I decided to return to the Israeli café for my last meal as it was so good then I tried to get a good night’s sleep! It would be my last night in a dorm for a while!
15/12
My shuttle bus to the airport was leaving at 6am so I was up at 5am to get ready. I sat downstairs by the open entrance to the hostel and watched monks returning from collecting alms. I was soon on my way to the airport and watching the sun was rising over Bangkok. I checked in straight away, found a coffee shop for some breakfast and got talking to a guy from New York about travelling. Before I knew it, it was time to board the plane. My uncle flies for British Airways and had tried to get me upgraded but my plane was completely full – everyone going home for Christmas I think! The staff were lovely to me though and it wasn’t too painful for a 13 hour flight! Of course I watched a good selection of movies – We’re the Millers, Monsters University, Despicable Me 2, The Internship, Kick Ass 2 and The Hangover 3. We flew over some amazing places and seeing the Himalayas was fantastic.
I landed at about 5.30pm London time. It felt so surreal to be back on British soil. The air smelt different, people sounded strange and everything seemed so dark.
Seven months have flown by and yet landing in Bangkok on the 21st of May seems like a lifetime ago. I can’t even begin to explain how many incredible places I’ve seen, how many interesting, generous people I’ve met and how much I’ve learnt about life.
Generally, people are kind, the world is small, family, friends and health are universally treasured and education is more valuable than money. Travel isn’t easy but it’s worth every penny spent and every tear shed.
And after every amazing thing I’ve done this year, absolutely nothing beats the feeling of walking through Heathrow, emotionally and physically drained, dragging a dirty tattered rucksack, knowing that I was about to be reunited with such incredible friends and family.
I was home.
And so this is the final chapter of this blog. I never expected anyone other than my dad to look at it and I really didn’t think that I’d actually manage to keep it up and enjoy it! I have over 3000 views and over 100 followers on tumblr so I guess it’s been useful for some people.
This may be the final chapter of this adventure but it’s certainly not the end. There’s a beautiful world out there just waiting to be explored. So for now let’s just say…
To be continued…..

Koh Lanta
09/12
We left Krabi early to head to Koh Lanta. Our minibus/ferry only took about 4 hours so we arrived in the early afternoon. We had read so many mixed reviews about Koh Lanta and about the place that we’d booked but when we arrived we were very happy. There aren’t many dorms on Koh Lanta so we had a nice bungalow with two double beds so the four of us could share one room. Our resort had two swimming pools and was right on the beach. We didn’t waste any time and got into our bikinis and explored the beach. The tide was moving in and we didn’t know how quickly it would move so we went to lie by the pool instead which is when we bumped into Jakob, one of the three Swedish guys that we’d met in Krabi. We couldn’t believe we were at the same place.
That night we had a couple of beers, got some food from a cheap food stall up the road, played guitar, ukulele and maracas and sang. The stars were amazing that night. I’d never seen so many and in so much detail. It’s sad really how little we see in the UK. We decided it would be a good idea to go swimming in the sea in our underwear and it was great, until the sea lice started to drive us mad. We called it a night then!
10/12
We found a small café just up the street for some breakfast and decided to rent scooters from our resort. As Alina and Andrea were both confident drivers we decided to get two and An and I would just ride on the back. The boys already had scooters so we all set off to explore the island together.
We ventured south and found an amazing beach with hardly anyone on it. The only thing there was a small beach shack selling food and drink and renting snorkels. We swam in the sea and explored the rock pools.
When we finally dragged ourselves away we drove on to the national park but decided it wasn’t worth paying the 200 baht each entrance fee. We turned round and found a roadside cafe and had lunch. We had the best mango sticky rice! I think all the best food in Asia is at the places that look the dodgiest. Andrea and Jakob stayed out to explore more and the rest of us went back to chill by the pool. Alina and I decided to get massages so I thought I’d try a reflexology one which I’d never had. It was really good but I think I still prefer Thai massage.
That evening we made the most of having scooters and went to find the night market. As Alina and I were heading out of our resort a motorbike tuk tuk drove past us. It was being driven by a boy who was about ten years old and had two younger children sat in the side car bit and a cat desperately clinging onto the roof. It was one of the funniest things I've seen! We found a night market where we got some street food snacks but realised that it wasn’t the best place to do shopping so went further up the island to a busier area where we looked round lots of stalls then found a restaurant for dinner. When we got back my body was aching as if I was getting the flu so I went straight to sleep hoping it would go away.
11/12
I barely slept as I was feverish and my body was hurting so much. I slept in when the girls went for breakfast and they brought me back some toast. I wasn’t sick or anything but I felt horrific. Alina drove me to the pharmacy and they just told me to take ibuprofen. I was just concerned as the next day I needed to do a 20 hour journey to Bangkok which would be horrific if I still felt that ill!
Whilst we were out at the pharmacy we also went to the shop to buy some cake and balloons as we had decided to have a little celebration on the beach that afternoon for An’s birthday. It was her birthday on the 13th but she would be travelling all day so we thought it would be nice to celebrate on Koh Lanta.
That afternoon Alina and Andrea managed to secretly set up a little birthday area on the beach. Jakob helped me to distract An for a bit then we took her down to the beach where they all jumped out to surprise her. We sang Happy Birthday in English, Swedish and German.
After the mini birthday party I went back to bed. I still felt so ill and just wanted to sleep. I slept most of the afternoon until Alina made me go and eat something with her. I just had toast and banana and only had one piece of banana as I couldn’t face it. I just had no appetite and didn’t want anything with any flavour. For me to not eat banana is unheard of! I didn’t go to the night market with them that night and didn’t even have the energy to hang out at the beach when they got back. I just slept and slept and slept. I missed saying bye to the boys as they were leaving early the next morning but it was so great to meet them and I hope they have fantastic travels and keep in touch!
12/12
Thankfully I work up feeling a lot better and was a lot more positive about my 20 hour journey! We had breakfast by the sea and a last swim in the sea. I got quite emotional as I knew it would be the last time I would be in the sea for some time! I showered and packed and then we all got coconut oil massages on the beach.
I was the first of the four of us to leave. We were all leaving on the same day so our few days together had worked out really well. My minibus picked me up at 12.30 and I had a teary goodbye with the girls. I couldn’t have wished for a better final week of travelling and we will definitely meet again – I will make sure of it! The world is a small place and it’s not exactly a horrible thing if I visit Berlin, Hawaii and San Francisco!
I got my minibus to Trang, a small town where I could get on the sleeper train. The town itself had free wifi everywhere – Australia needs to take some lessons from Asia! There wasn’t much to do there but there was a really nice café so I had a latte and watched the locals go about their business.
I got on the train at 5pm. I was so used to the trains! I ordered a meal set for 160 baht, then got into my bunk and tried to sleep.
Having the air con by my head was pretty crappy but soon I was fast asleep and on my way back to Bangkok for the last time.

Krabi
04/12
My original plan was to travel through Laos after Vietnam but the more I had thought about it the more I wanted my last bit of travelling to be by the sea and not stuck on huge massive bus journeys. So I had booked myself a cheap flight from Hanoi to Bangkok. I landed in Bangkok at 1.30pm and shared a taxi with a woman I had travelled from Hanoi with into town. I carried on to the train station as my plan was to get a sleeper train down to Krabi.
My taxi took forever to get to the train station as it was avoiding the areas where riots were taking place. Traffic was awful and it took over half an hour to go 4km. Eventually I arrived at the station where I was told all the sleeper trains were full. I panicked but decided that this couldn’t really be true so I tried asking a random train station helper man. He took me upstairs to another office and I somehow easily bought a ticket. When the train arrived there was then great confusion as there seemed to be two carriages that were number 10. Some of us were moved about and I ended up in the unfortunate group of people sat on the floor at the side of the train whilst they tried to fix our carriage. I’m not sure what was wrong with it but it had no electricity and it wouldn’t stick on to the other carriages. After basically crashing the train a few times right in front of us in an attempt to force it together they eventually brought a new one. I was pretty glad about that and was finally on my way to Krabi. A Canadian guy called Brandon was sat opposite me so we had a long conversation about the bum gun and then went to explore the restaurant car. We sat in the extremely noisy car (it had no windows) and ate a really good Thai meal whilst shouting a lot to try to have a conversation. I was so tired and slept really well on the train that night!
05/12
I woke up on the sleeper train to the familiar drones of the orange juice lady passing through the carriage. “Orange juuuuiiiicccceeeee”. It was my dad’s birthday so I took a quick photo for him. I later found out it was also the King’s birthday and so many Thai’s were wearing yellow t-shirts as yellow is the colour for Monday and the King was born on a Monday.
I arrived in Surat Thani a couple of hours later than I was meant to (not a surprise at all!) and was dragged from bus to songthaew, bus to songthaew until I finally reached my hostel in Krabi. The only thing that happened along the way was that I found a bumbag in the toilet at a café I was waiting at. It had loads of cash, passport, cards, everything in it. I found the guy it belonged to and reunited him with it! I’d seen other girls use the toilet in between him and me though and none of them had picked it up.
My hostel in Krabi was amazing. It was called Pak Up and was school themed. Each dorm was a different school subject. I was in “Thai”. I ventured out to find the local night market, to get a pad thai and a coconut shake. Back at the hostel I met my roommates properly. Two of the girls, An and Andrea were going to go on a boat trip the next day so I decided to book on as well, as did our other roommate Alina. The weather hadn’t been great in Krabi but boats always seem to know how to avoid the rain so I figured it should be a good day!
06/12
Alina, An, Andrea and I were picked up at 8.30am for our four island trip. We were taken to Ao Nang beach where we were given pink stickers and we waited around for a bit for all the other pink sticker people to arrive. We headed out in a long boat to island number one – Tup and Mor Island. It is actually two islands but when the water is low you can walk across a narrow strip of sand from one to the other. We explored Tup Island a bit, drank coconuts and swam in the sea.
Our second stop was Chicken Island where we didn’t actually get onto the land as it was a snorkelling spot. The snorkelling was okay, it wasn’t amazing but we all enjoyed ourselves anyway.
We then stopped at Poda Island and had some rice, chicken and vegetables that was included in our tour. It rained for about 5 minutes but luckily most of the day was a bit sunny and still warm. There were lots of boats having lunch at the same time and I think there was too much litter and too many people for me to fully enjoy this stop!
Our last stop at Phra Nang Beach was lovely. We had lots of time to lie on the beach and relax. I swam out into a cave with a German girl called Sasha who we’d met on our boat. Once we were in the cave we could stand up and walk about which was cool. On the swim back she accidently swam into a rock when we were talking and cut her leg. It wasn’t too bad and we didn’t realise until we got out of the sea and the blood mixed with water was running all down her leg. Lots of people were just staring! She was fine though. It wasn’t that bad.
We soon had to go back to Krabi as it was the end of the day. I’d had such a great day with Alina, An and Andrea. We had a really great time together. That evening it poured it down so we ate in a nearby restaurant then went for a beer in the rooftop bar at the hostel with our other roommate Pete. We watched a Thai man on guitar try to start up the open mic night before we all went to bed knackered from our day of island hopping!
07/12
An and Andrea went on a day trip to Phi Phi Island. I had decided that I would probably hate Koh Phi Phi and Alina had been and didn’t like it so we headed to Railay Beach for the day. Finally the sun was shining again and it was so sunny out!
We had a late breakfast then we had to deal with Alina’s card being blocked but we eventually made it to Railay beach which was just incredible! We just sunbathed and I bought a new ring at the silver shop before we had to catch the last boat back.
That evening when An and Andrea returned from Phi Phi, we met our new room mate Ben and some German guys from another dorm and we all went down to the night market. We were joined by three Swedish guys and so there was a big group of us in the end. We had a good laugh and it seemed that quite a few of us were thinking of heading on to Koh Lanta so we figured we might meet there too.
08/12
We had thought about doing a day trip to Koh Lanta but it’s such a big island so instead we made the decision that as we were all getting along so well, Alina, An, Andrea and I would go and stay on Koh Lanta for a few days. We had one last day in Krabi so we just went back to Railay Beach as An and Andrea hadn’t been. Again it was just gorgeous! We met a Canadian girl called Jennifer on the boat there so she joined us on the beach for the day.
Andrea and I hired a kayak and paddled around the sea. Just as we were hiring it Alina had bought us all Magnums so we had to take ours with us but it was pretty awesome to just stop for a bit and float around in the middle of the sea having our ice creams!
We had a great beach day and that evening we met even more people in our hostel and went to a different night market where local children were performing on a stage in the middle. It was so cute! We all got split up but I am a good head and shoulders above the average Thai person so in the busy night market I could still see! We booked our minibus for the next morning to Koh Lanta and our hostel helped us to book an affordable bungalow that was in a resort so we would have a pool and be on the beach too. We were so excited!
