She believed in people. No matter how much shit and filth she saw on the streets, she always saw the good inside.

No longer in a sling, but still in a cast, Patch was getting frustrated at her lack of ability to do most of the things sheâd normally do. Too stubborn to give in entirely, Patch was determined to still get in a full workout - just minus the weights.Â
However, one misstep on the treadmill had her smacking her cast against it to try catch herself. While she didnât fall, she did swear, pain ringing through her arm.Â

The doctor had finally signed off on her returning to desk duty, so Patch had spent the day buried in paperwork. Not the best way to start working again, despite how bored sheâd been, sheâd decided to get a drink to settle herself after the day.Â
Noticing a man playing pool, she watched as he easily beat his competition. âYou hustled him.â She accused jokingly, not actually thinking it was a bad thing.Â

Verity couldnât argue with that since she would have requested desk duty if in Patchâs position. They had pulled her from the desk to take over as a detective and that should have left an opening.
She wasnât budging. That was truly a shame since Verity was hoping she wouldnât have to turn to desperate measures. âI still donât trust you,â Verity mumbled. âSo I am truly sorry itâs come to this point.â
There was a moment of hesitation then Verity stuck a handcuff around Patchâs wrist, the other half already around her wrist. âI guess weâre going to find the other detective.â
Patch didnât see it coming, which was kind of embarrassing. She was supposed to be quicker than that, but there she was, handcuffed to her colleague. âShit.â Staring down at the handcuff, she knew sheâd lost the argument. âIs this really necessary?âÂ
âIâm usually the one cuffing people.â She muttered, twisting her wrist a little to find a more comfortable position. With one arm broken, and the other cuffed, she was not at all in control of anything anymore, and she didnât like it much. But she supposed it was her own fault. âGuess I have no choice, Iâm coming with you.âÂ

âOh, perfect,â Claude said, obviously relieved. âIâm not picky either, honestly Iâm usually just eating at Taco Bell,â He admitted with a laugh. âUh, if Iâm being totally honest with you, Eu, Iâm a little nervous. Itâs been a long time since Iâve been on a proper date,â He confessed to her, reaching to open the door of the restaurant. He was honestly glad that she had even said yes to going. Heâd been glad to have a normal interaction with someone for a change, even if he was a bit nervous.
âIm glad you answered,â He replied. âHopefully Iâll cure your boredom, at least a bit,â
His honest admission made her smile. Eudora had always believed that honesty was the best policy, although she did often use sarcasm in place of it. âReally? Mind if I ask why itâs been a long time? Are you a workaholic too?âÂ
Once inside, they were shown to a table. âTrust me, tonightâs already better than eating efo riro for the third night in a row.â Coming from a traditional Nigerian family, on one side, Eudora was proud of her culture but sometimes, her family was too stifling for her liking. âPlus, the companyâs not bad.âÂ

The eye roll was expected. Truthfully, Patchâs appearance should have been something she expected. She had hoped she would take the time off though since the past couple of days had been bordering on getting traumatic. âWasnât it the doctorâs orders that you rest?â
She pressed her tongue against her cheek and shook her head. It took her pinching the bridge of her nose and several deep breaths for her to come up with an action plan. âIâm going to ask you to move back one last time,â She stated then turned back to the crime scene.
âThey missed a something,â Her nose wrinkled and she narrowed her eyes at Patch. âI donât think I can trust my going to fetch the investigator and leaving you here.â
For a second, the smaller woman scowled at the mention of her doctor. âIâm not convinced my mother didnât bribe him. I should at least be on desk duty.â But since she wasnât even allowed that right now, sheâd just try help out the only way she could. Even if it was against the rules, but it wasnât like she was hurting anyone.Â
Patch made no effort to step back. No matter how much she respected and liked Verity, she was too used to getting her own way. Nothing ever stood in Eudoraâs path, she just climbed over any obstacles.Â
Studying the crime scene as well, sheâd also seen what had been missed. âYou beat me by two seconds.â She smiled at Verity, sensing she was about to get what she wanted. âIâm not going to contaminate the scene, Iâm not that stupid.â It went unsaid that she definitely wasnât going to leave though. She knew Verity would get that message loud and clear.Â

âWell Iâm glad officer.â Frances teased the woman quietly as he moved to rest her hand on her sonâs head, playing with his blond hair as they waited for the next stop. Â He couldnât help but laugh as the small boy glared back at the officer. âSorry, heâs just as moody as I am, itâs a real problem.â she joked quietly.
As the other explained her job, Frankie nodded and smiled softly. âItâs good though, that you think itâs worth it and all that. When I was younger I thought about becoming a cop, but yeah, I think you see why thatâd be a problem.â she joked quietly. âGuess Iâd be a better vigilante.â
âDetective, actually.â Patch corrected the woman almost absentmindedly. Sheâd gotten used to making the distinction clear, after dealing with a few passive aggressive assholes who refused to acknowledge her achievements. âNo, itâs fine. I think I can handle a glare. Itâs better than one of my cousinâs kids, who screams every time she sees me.âÂ
The mention of vigilantes made her groan, thinking of the creep who knew too much about her. âPlease donât. Thereâs enough trouble running around, I donât want to deal with any more vigilantes.â She did understand though, sometimes it felt like rules were more of a hindrance, but she did try to stick to them. Without any guilt, she admitted, âI probably use my taser a little more than I need to, but... itâs effective.âÂ

Frankie rolled her eyes. âIt wouldnât have been a murder. Just enough to get him away.â she sighed dramatically as she flipped the knife shut and shoved it back into her pocket, squeezing at her sonâs hand some.
Watching her threaten the man however, Frances let out a laugh. âPeople are so fucked.â she sighed, gripping onto the pole again as the train began to come to a stop. âSo whatâs it like being a cop here? I bet itâs awful, especially with everything thatâs been happening, hm?â
âIâm relieved to hear youâd only lightly stab someone.â Her voice was dry but faintly amused, watching as the man backed away as much as possible. Awkwardly, her arm still in a sling, she turned back to the woman again, flashing a quick smile at the boy by her side. She didnât know much about kids, but she liked them.Â
âItâs an awful time for anyone living in New York.â Eudora loved her job, she always had, but it did have some drawbacks. Like breaking her arm in three places after an explosion. âItâs hard,â She admitted, âbut itâs worth it.â For her, knowing she could make a difference to someoneâs life through her work was the very reason sheâd become a cop. Sheâd seen what it meant to her father, sheâd seen the influence heâd had on the community, and she wanted to do that too. But heâd never had to deal with the craziness she did.Â
Frances supposed she truly hadnât lost her spark. For months she had been worried that she couldnât stand up for herself anymore, that she had become too reliant on Sebastian. She was just trying to ride the subway like a normal person, Thomas holding onto her hand. Of course that meant some creep was going to try and interrupt.Â
She bit her tongue and stood tall, until he pushed too far, actually touching her. With a swift motion she used the hand that had been holding onto the pole and pulled a switch blade from her pocket. Before she was able to really threaten the man however someone stepped between them. She glared at the stranger. âListen, I could have handled him.â
Eudora couldnât wait til she was allowed to go back to work. Catching the subway, sheâd been planning on seeing her doctor and trying to convince him to say she could at least be on desk duty. Itâd be better than being home all the time.Â
But then she saw a woman be harassed by a creep, and took two steps. Seeing the knife, she readjusted her plan, and faced the woman instead. âIâm sure you could have, but I donât want to have to call in a murder right now.â She tilted her head as if considering it. âNo, itâs too easy a case if you kill someone in front of an off duty cop.â But then the guy hit her on the ass. Eudora spun around. âSince I donât have my cuffs on me, I will let her stab you if you touch another woman.â She warned, too tired to try stick to protocol.Â

Claude remembered Patchâ well, Eudora, as sheâd been so kind to let him call herâ had given him her phone number. Claude hadnât really dated much since being recruited to come to the city to help out with his power, and truthfully, heâd often found flirting a little difficult. He wasnât exactly awkward, but he wasnât any night in shining armor either. Claude considered himself to be a bit of a nerd, and he usually couldnât stop it from escaping his soul and lunging his nerdy-ness into almost any and every conversation he had.Â
Though, after calling her, much to his surprise she had agreed to meet him for dinner. Heâd picked a little restaurant downtown, something not too fancy but definitely something nice. He wanted to treat her, but he had a feeling that she was the type to be more impressed by personality and he didnât want to look like he was trying to flex. âI figured this place would be good. Iâve never been, but the reviews were pretty tight and Iâm not too picky myself,â He said as he walked her towards the entrance. âUnless, you want to go somewhere else?â
With the bombings, and then being put on leave, Eudora had forgotten about Claude, right until heâd called her. Since she was still on leave, thanks to her arm still in a sling, sheâd needed the distraction from the bad mood sheâd been in, and a date was the perfect thing. Itâd been a little harder to get ready for the date than sheâd like to admit, but sheâd managed.Â
âNo, this place is great. Iâve heard good things too.â She lived off takeout usually, although lately, with her mother fussing over her so much, sheâd had plenty of leftovers stuffed in the fridge. Dinner out made a nice change, no matter where it was. âHonestly, I can eat anything. Iâve never been picky either. Not when it comes to food.â With a lot of other things in her life, she could be a bit too exact, too strict, but food had been such a big part of her childhood.Â
âIâm really glad you called, I have to admit. Iâve been bored out of my brain.âÂ
