First things first β how far is it, really?
Around 65-70 km. Doesn't sound like much on paper, but this isn't a straight highway drive. You're going from flat land up into the Himalayan foothills, so the road curves a lot, climbs a lot, and takes longer than the distance suggests.
How long is the drive going to take?
Give it 3 to 3.5 hours, on a normal day. Could be a bit more if:
it's monsoon season and there's been some road repair or a landslide clearing going on
you're travelling during peak season (Oct-Dec or Mar-May) when Sevoke Road gets busier
you want to stop for photos along the way (which, honestly, you should)
Pro tip: try to land and start your drive earlier in the day rather than late afternoon. Hill roads are just nicer to drive β and look at β in daylight.
There are basically two options.
Sevoke Road is the classic route β goes past the Coronation Bridge, through Kurseong, then Ghum, before dropping you into Darjeeling. It's a little longer but the road's usually in good shape.
Rohini Road is more of a shortcut. Skips the long Sevoke stretch, gets you to Kurseong faster. Only downside β it's narrower and can get iffy during heavy monsoon rain.
If you're into the bridge and the views, go Sevoke. If you just want to get there quicker, Rohini's your route. Either way, just mention your preference when you book.
Okay but what's the fare actually going to be?
Honestly? It depends. Type of car, how many of you are travelling, how much luggage, and what season it is all factor in. Broadly:
shared taxis are cheapest but come with fixed timings and less comfort
a private sedan works fine for small groups
an SUV makes sense if you're 5+ people or have a lot of bags
Prices move around with fuel costs and season, so instead of throwing a random number at you that might be outdated by the time you read this, just message or call and get the current rate. No surprise charges, promise.

Send your flight number and arrival time β this way if your flight's late, the driver just waits, no stress

Stuff worth seeing on the way up
Since you're already going to be in the car for a few hours, might as well make a stop or two:
Coronation Bridge β everyone stops here for photos, it's right over the Teesta river
Kurseong β tea gardens, quiet vibe, good spot for a chai break
Ghum β one of the highest railway stations in the country, plus the Ghum Monastery
Batasia Loop β a spiral railway loop with a war memorial, and honestly some of the best mountain views right before you hit Darjeeling town
None of these need a big detour β maybe 15-20 extra minutes if you stop at one or two.
Weather changes everything up here
Winter (Dec-Feb) β clear roads, but expect morning fog, so build in a little extra time
Summer (Mar-Jun) β probably the smoothest driving conditions all year
Monsoon (Jul-Sep) β this is when landslides are a real possibility, keep plans loose
Autumn (Oct-Nov) β generally considered the best time, clear skies, great visibility
What car should you actually book?
Small family or couple? A sedan's fine. Bigger group, or carrying a ton of luggage (we see this a lot with people heading up for longer stays)? Go SUV. It's a small choice but it changes how tired you feel after 3+ hours on hill roads.
Why book local instead of some random app?
Drivers who do this route every single day just know things β which stretch of road tends to flood first, how to handle a delayed flight without charging extra, where to detour if there's a landslide. That kind of local know-how genuinely matters more here than on a flat city route.
