This is the first draft of an interview with my schoolfriend Charles about the theme of love. There are a couple of tweaks to be made, such as contextualising a couple of the answers as obviously, my part of the dialogue has been left out, therefore making the recording more of a monologue. This has been cut short in order to make it small enough to upload to TUMBLR

The images above are from a day out in the market, and were used to get quick and easy references to be used at a later date. I feel that whilst none of them are particularly inspiring photographs, a lot of them act to represent the mood of the market on that day, whilst it was sparsely populated in areas, there was still a sense of movement throughout, whether it be people stopping for lunch, travelling or conversing.

//Spitalfields Drawing Workshop

The above images were created during a drawing workshop for our pitch project to help up to develop some of our previous field sketches and photographs. I really enjoyed experimenting with an acrylic Posca pen to create a series of relatively minimalistic, graphic images. The final image shows a small section of the roof over the market, which I have framed using a felt marker, I felt it necessary to frame the image to emphasise the fact that it is merely a small section of something much larger. The drawing of the man with a jetpack was from when we were asked to create an image of how we imagined Spitalfields in the future. I took the figure from the previous drawing and combined him, a simple Spitalfields wonderer with a symbol of sci-fi futurism, the jetpack. The other two figures are simply studies of characters I observed stood in the market. I feel as though, although they are simple, they act to represent the feeling of the place, people are both moving from A-B, such as the man in blue, and stood browsing the market, such as the woman in red. There is a nice sense of continuity between these two images, attributed to the similarity in scale, and mutual palette.

Screen Printing Induction// Friday 9th March

The above images are a few of the results of the screen printing induction day. For the basis of my images, I used a few drawings from my sketchbook, each of which is based on a painting by another artist. The blue print showing a woman on the phone references Ewan Uglow’s painting ‘Georgia’, whilst other references shown above include Waterhouse’s ‘The Lady of Shalott’ and Marcus Stone’s ‘Il y en toujours un autre’ translated as ‘there’s always another’. I’ve chosen these particular images because each of them has a kind of romantic backstory or mood to it, which I think matches well with my theme of poetry in my personal project. The character’s each express a sense of distain or irritation, which I think would work really well with text, I intend to explore this using these screen printed images. I think that the crisp line created by screen-printed images works well to illustrate the thick block colour lines of each drawing and emphasises the simplicity of each illustration and the emotion it conveys.

Finally, I placed my images into a narrative frame composition in order to experiment with how I could accurately compose my collection of images into one. I think that compositionally, this piece is quite strong as it leads the eye of the observer across the page from left to right, right up until the final frame, where the eye reads from the character on the left, to the cat, sitting on the right. I think that it also works to create an element of ambiguity within the first few images as the character faces off the page, which leads the viewer to consider who or what she is talking to as she becomes more frustrated.

I then used Photoshop to manipulate my drawings and make them fee more finished and clear. I started by putting the levels up in order to give the lines a heavier, more exaggerated feel, which made them look more like the lines produced when printing than pencil lines.

I then multiplied the layers to set the pencil marks apart from the white background, which allowed me to create a block colour shape of the figure to set behind the pencil lines. I feel that by using a lighter tone for this form, I could subtly set the figures forward and separate them from the background visually. I chose to make the lines a dark shade of red in order to give a subliminal hint towards the impending frustration of the character in my narrative.

Cara Drawings.

We were tasked with creating a series of drawings of somebody in order to compose a database of references, from which we would draw later when creating our narrative pieces. I also used a few of these drawings directly, scanning and manipulating them digitally.
