Authors Note: Hiii! Thank you so much for the request and the kind compliments. Sorry I believe inactive for a while, but I hope you still enjoy it!
𝜗ৎ henry loves halloween. something about the thinning veil between worlds, the darkness, the acceptance of monsters appeals to him. the house is already gothic and victorian, but he insists the both of you decorate it further. candles everywhere, dried flowers, autumn leaves arranged just so. you suspect he just likes the atmosphere. likes the shadows and the flickering light.
𝜗ৎ he insists you dress up, but he chooses your costume. usually something victorian and dark. a ghost in flowing white, a vampire bride in black lace, a witch in deep purple. he spends weeks planning it, getting the details perfect. when you're finally dressed, he circles you slowly, adjusting a ribbon here, a piece of lace there. "perfect," he says. "my beautiful dark creature."
𝜗ৎ on halloween night, he doesn't let you answer the door for trick or treaters. "I'll handle it," he says firmly. you're not sure if he's protecting you from the outside world or protecting the outside world from catching too much of a glimpse into your life together. either way, you stay in the sitting room while he distributes candy with that charming smile he uses for strangers.
𝜗ৎ after the trick or treaters stop coming, he locks the door and turns off the porch light. "now the night is ours," he says. the way he looks at you in your costume makes heat pool in your belly. there's something predatory in his gaze, something that reminds you that you're alone in this big house with him and no one will be knocking anymore.
𝜗ৎ he likes playing games on halloween. hiding and seek through the darkened mansion, but when he finds you, the "prize" is him pinning you against the nearest wall or bending you over the nearest surface. "caught you," he'll murmur against your neck. "now you're mine." as if you weren't already his every other day of the year.
𝜗ৎ sometimes he tells you ghost stories by the fire. his voice takes on that hypnotic quality, weaving tales of restless spirits and dark things in the woods. his hand rests possessively on your thigh the whole time. when you shiver, you're not sure if it's from the stories or from his touch. "scared?" he asks, but he's smiling. he likes you frightened, likes being the one you turn to for comfort.
𝜗ৎ he has a thing for vampire aesthetics on halloween. if your costume involves it, he'll tilt your head to the side and drag his teeth down your throat without breaking skin. "I could mark you," he whispers. "leave my bite on your neck for everyone to see. would you like that? everyone knowing you belong to someone?" sometimes he does bite, hard enough to bruise, hard enough that you wear his mark for days.
𝜗ৎ henry makes special halloween treats. candied apples, pumpkin tarts, spiced cider. he presents them beautifully, everything arranged with precision. but there's something possessive about the way he feeds you pieces by hand. "open," he instructs, placing a bite of tart on your tongue. watching you chew and swallow. "good girl. another."
𝜗ৎ the woods are more active on halloween night. you can hear things moving out there, see shadows that shouldn't exist. henry keeps you far from the windows facing the forest. "not tonight," he says when you drift too close to looking out. "tonight the things in those woods are bolder. but don't worry, darling. nothing gets past me. nothing touches what's mine."
𝜗ৎ there's something about halloween that makes him more intense. more possessive. like the dark energy of the night feeds something in him. he takes you multiple times that night, in different rooms, still partially in costume. "my dark bride," he growls. "my creature. mine to claim on this unholy night."
𝜗ৎ the next morning, november first, everything goes back to normal routines. but he keeps one thing from your costume. a ribbon, a piece of lace, something small. you find it later in his study, tucked away in a drawer with other small treasures. tokens of you, collected and kept like precious artifacts.

DISCLAIMER: I don’t own The Hunger Games franchise, the images above, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, or any of the characters in this fic other than Bellova. I also do not condone the beliefs or actions of Coriolanus or Bellova.
SUMMARY: Coriolanus’s academic and professional life is blossoming. But his wife continues to be his biggest obstacle.
⚠️Warnings⚠️: THIS IS A DARK CHAPTER. It contains violence, verbal/physical abuse/, mention of murderous intent, Coriolanus being horrible, HEAVY ALLUSIONS TO SEX, NONCON, swearing
A/n: IM ALIVE YIPPEE i’m so sorry for disappearing i went on a trip and i was also facing MAJOR writers block but i’m back!!!
“Congratulations once again, Mister Snow. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow on your first day as an official Gamemaker.”
Beaming, Coriolanus shook Dr Gaul’s hand and quickly exited the office. He was elated, relieved that he’d finally received the promotion he’d worked so tirelessly for.
Finally, he’d be able to make some real change. Sure, it meant more office hours, but it was more than worth it.
As he rode home, Coriolanus was already brainstorming ideas to bring to the meeting the following morning. He knew he needed to immediately prove he was worthy of the position, despite having worked with the other Gamemakers for almost a year.
When he arrived inside the Reginelle estate, he took off his coat and practically shoved it into an Avox’s arms. He ordered her to get him a glass of red wine, and to bring it to his Bellova’s. Nodding quickly, she did as she was told, and he relished in the obvious nervousness in her body language.
Now that he was officially the man of the house, he held a significant amount of power over every matter revolving the Reginelle fortune and property. In most ways, he had more power than Bellova herself.
Which was extremely satisfying.
Pushing open the bedroom doors, he immediately spotted his wife sitting at her vanity, brushing her hair slowly. Her movements seemed robotic, which wasn’t out of the ordinary. When she was under the serum’s influence, she was obviously not functioning as a normal human would.
But somehow, nobody noticed. Or at least, they attributed it to her lingering grief, not to any unnatural cause.
Bellova looked over her shoulder, and smiled at Coriolanus. “Hello there, handsome. I missed you.”
Coriolanus didn’t return her smile. “I’m sure you did.”
His fingers worked quickly to undo the buttons of his dress shirt. Though he wanted to change into his sleeping clothes as soon as possible, he was still careful to preserve it’s condition. After all, it had cost at least a couple hundred dollars.
As soon as he slipped on his silk robe, he spoke again.
“I had a meeting with Dr. Gaul today.”
Coriolanus barely suppressed a grin when Bellova’s eyes widened in fear at the mention of the Head Gamemaker.
“W-What about?” she asked softly, setting down her brush.
“She promoted me. I’m now officially a Gamemaker.”
Bellova breathed a sigh of relief. “Congratulations, my love,” she said gently, walking over to him. “I’m very proud of you.”
She looked so vulnerable, the dim light of the room casting an angelic glow across her face. She was clad only in a cream white nightdress, the fabric tantalizingly translucent. Though he despised her, it he still found her body to be irresistible.
Coriolanus sat down on the edge of the bed, and pulled Bellova into his lap. She immediately curled up against him, the romantic gesture making him cringe. Her clinginess always irritated him, and he would reprimand her often so she would behave at least decently in public. However, when they were in private, it took even more effort to keep her hands off of him.
But he supposed that using her desperation for his own pleasure wouldn’t hurt.
Coriolanus lifted Bellova off of his thighs and let her fall backwards onto the bed. She giggled, blushing like a schoolgirl. She truly was enamored with him.
“You’re so pretty, Coryo,” she simpered, reaching up to cup his face with one hand. He didn’t reply, simply pushing the straps of her dress off of her shoulders.
Just as he let the fabric slip past her chest, Bellova let out a pained cry.
Coriolanus snarled in frustration. He was so close to letting out all of his pent-up feelings out, but now, he had to deal with the real Bellova.
He didn’t move from his position over her as he reached into his back pocket for the serum. He watched, almost bored, as she writhed beneath him, her eyes squeezed shut.
As soon as Bellova stopped twitching and her eyes opened again, a smile spread across his face. It was cruel, the immense enjoyment he got from her fear and helplessness.
But he didn’t give a fuck. It was what she deserved.
Bellova’s lips immediately curled into a sneer.
“Get your hands off of me.”
Coriolanus rolled his eyes and didn’t respond. He tugged her nightgown off of her body, making her gasp and shudder. One of her hands shot upwards, but he grabbed her wrist before she could grab his throat.
“Say whatever you want to say now, you feral bitch, before I put you back under.”
“You’re calling me feral, and yet you’re the one who’s desperate to fuck me.” Bellova’s smirk was infuriating, but Coriolanus refused to give her the satisfaction of a visible reaction from him.
“You’re a pathetic man, Coriolanus,” she spat, her voice shaking with pure hatred. “One day, I swear, I will make you pay for everything you’ve done. You’ll regret that you were ever fucking born.”
Coriolanus threw back his head as he laughed, and gripped her left shoulder so tightly that he was sure it would leave a mark. The needle of the syringe was a mere inch from her neck, threatening to puncture her at any moment.
“You don’t scare me anymore, Bellova.”
Bellova averted her gaze from the needle, and her piercing grey eyes cut into his with a burning intensity. When she spoke, she sounded exactly like her old self: confident, vengeful, and wickedly intelligent.
“Good. That’ll make you much easier to kill.”
As the needle pierced her skin and Bellova let out a scream, Coriolanus’s stomach churned unpleasantly.
It was harmless threat, he was sure of it.
But it still shook him to his core.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Within a month of working as a Gamemaker, Coriolanus had established himself as one of the sharpest young minds in the Capitol.
The combination of his effortless charm and impressive intellect had made him instantly popular. Hardly anyone remembered the incident that occurred regarding him and the 10th Hunger Games. He had buried that as deep as possible, and covered it by establishing his reputation as the bright, young Gamemaker who was destined to succeed.
His University life was also flourishing. He had a great report with all of his instructors, and was well-liked amongst other students. His grades were stellar, as he knew they would be, and put him on the path to graduate at the top of his class.
The only challenge he faced was dealing with his wife.
Though the serum was still effective, it continued to wear off during the evening. Bellova would scream and yell as loudly as she could, cursing at him and occasionally pleasing for someone to help her. Luckily for him, Coriolanus had smoothly lied to everyone working in the Reginelle estate, saying that her cries were a result of a mental disorder she’d developed from intense grief.
He knew they were all too scared of him to question it.
However, as more time passed, the enjoyment he felt from seeing her distress diminished. It simply became irritating, and he no longer got pleasure from seeing her suffer mentally.
So he decided it was time to tame the beast that was Bellova Reginelle once and for all.
It didn’t take long for him to convince Dr. Gaul to begin working on a stronger serum: one that contained effects that would subdue his wife for the rest of her days. She understood the importance of eliminating threats. After all, she’d encouraged him to continue his practice of poisoning his opponents.
The serum would take at least two weeks to develop. Dr. Gaul insisted that she needed adequate time to test it, and ensure that it worked exactly as intended.
“No mishaps this time,” she had said with bone-chilling determination. “Your bride will never be a bother to you again.”
So Coriolanus had to accept the fact that Bellova would fight tooth-and-nail for her freedom for several more nights.
But he would never let her have it.
His career was just beginning. He could not let the citizens of the Capitol discover that he was deeply involved in corruption and scandalous acts. It would ruin him before he truly began to climb the social ladder.
After all, Snow was destined to land on top.
And in his case, getting to the “top” only meant one thing:
Though, if Julian Arroco kept hollering at you the way he had since he’d arrived at camp two days prior, you would be very late. It would take a significant amount of time to kill him and find Luke so he could help you hide the body.
As you approached the large wooden building, you placed your right hand on the hilt of your weapon. If another word escaped his idiotic mouth, you would ensure he ended up in the infirmary.
Just as your left boot made contact with the first step, you felt a rough, large hand grab your forearm.
“Don’t do this,” you warned, your tone almost disappointed, as if you were scolding a young child.
“Relax,” Julian said with a cocky grin. “Just wanna ask you a couple questions.”
You sneered at him, reveling in the slight fear that appeared in the son of Aphrodite’s eyes. “Sure you do. Now get lost.”
“I’m not afraid of you, emo girl-“
“I have a name-“
“You don’t scare me at all,” Julian continued, completely ignoring you. “Everyone thinks you’re intimidating, but you really aren’t. I bet you’re all soft and pathetic on the inside, hm? Seems like it doesn’t take much to get under your skin.”
Tugging your arm out of his disgusting grasp, your wings appeared, giving you a larger, more terrifying silhouette. Julian backed away, his muscular, conventionally attractive body cowering before you.
You gave him a twisted smile. “You’re right, Julian. I am very easily provoked, and having brainless idiots follow me around and harass me all day really gets on my nerves. And I’m sure that you’ve heard the rumors about my “weird, horrifying death powers”. You don’t want to find out if they’re true, do you?”
“N-No.”
“That’s what I fuckin’ thought. Now leave me alone, or I’ll tell Luke to target you during the next round of Capture the Flag.”
“Of course,” Julian scoffed. “You’ll go running for your man to protect you. Just like a girl-“
His lips froze mid-sentence when you raised your hand, the tips of your fingers pointing towards his throat.
“I don’t know everything you’ve heard about me,” you began slowly. “But if you’re really that interested in my life, let me start with this: yes, I can kill without even laying hands on my opponent. Want a demonstration?“
“Please,” Julian whimpered. “I’m sorry, I swear by the gods that I’ll leave you be.”
You tilted your head. You briefly debated the benefits and consequences of hurting him, and decided that it was worth it.
But before you could act on your decision, you heard the doors of the Big House open behind you.
“What’s going on here?” Chiron’s tone was apprehensive, yet it lacked any fear. After living for thousands of years, he had seen much more terrifying sights.
“She just started attacking me, sir-“
“That’s bullshit,” you snapped. “You’ve been harassing me ever since you crossed the camp border.”
“Enough,” Chiron said firmly. “Julian, go back to the dining pavilion where the rest of your siblings are. I have an important matter to discuss with this young lady here, who you should not be treating so disrespectfully.”
Julian gave you a scathing look, but turned on his heel and walked away, his fists clenched at his sides.
Chiron looked down at you, his face softening ever-so slightly.
“Come, my child,” he said ominously, beckoning for you to follow him inside. “We must get this conversation started before you miss too many activities.”
.
.
.
You left the Big House even more angry than you entered it.
Out of all the things you expected the conversation to be about, “trying to blend in better with the other campers” hadn’t even entered your mind.
You’d tried so hard for years to fit in. To become a normal demigod (or as normal as a demigod could be, anyway) and get along well enough with those around you. It became much harder to do so after returning from the quest, but you still put effort into being at least agreeable. And it seemed like most people didn’t mind you, despite your darker demeanor and closed-off nature.
But apparently it wasn’t enough.
Some campers had been genuinely disturbed by you of late. And though it wasn’t your fault in the slightest, you were being forced to change.
It simply wasn’t fair.
And even worse, you held none of the blame. Your father was responsible for it.
But because he was a god, he’d never face the consequences.
With every step you took, the grass and flowers withered and turned grey around your feet. You didn’t care that other people were staring.
You just wanted to find your boyfriend.
You spotted him sitting on a stone bench with Chris, chatting casually. As soon as he looked up and saw you, his relaxed posture stiffened. He stood up and walked towards you briskly, instantly placing a hand on your shoulder.
“What’s wrong, angel?”
“We need to go somewhere more private,” you hissed. “Or I’m going to scare everyone else.”
Luke’s brow furrowed with confusion, but he didn’t question you. You practically dragged him towards Cabin 11, not even bothering to see who was watching.
Once you’d reached the clearing behind the Hermes cabin, you told Luke everything. How Chiron had stopped you from hurting Julian, and what he’d said once you were in his office. The longer you talked about it, the angrier you got.
“That makes no fucking sense,” Luke said, bewildered. “You’ve been here basically your entire life, and he’s just now trying to force you to conform because it’s bothering a couple of cowardly half-bloods?”
You nodded stiffly, trying not to show that it was getting to you. You didn’t want to place that burden on him, not after everything else he’d been through of late.
But the tears sprung to your eyes anyway.
Luke sighed, pulling you into his arms instantly.
“Hey, listen to me,” he said. “You haven’t done anything wrong. You don’t need to change, even though someone’s trying to force you to. If people are bothered by your existence, well, that’s their fuckin’ problem.”
“Everyone was fine until we came back from our quest,” you lamented. “Sure, I understand why my abilities may be off-putting, but I’m not trying to hurt anyone by just existing! Why don’t they understand that?”
“Because they’re idiots,” Luke answered. “They judge you before they get familiar with you, which is unfair. But those who do know you well love you.”
You sniffled, clinging to him like a vice. “But if I don’t change, people are going to keep complaining Chiron, and-“
“Don’t pay any attention to them. It’s not worth it,” he said firmly.
With a sigh, you nodded slightly. “I know, I know…I just get so angry when people bother me for no apparent reason. It makes me want to leave this place, even though I know the outside world is so much more dangerous.”
Luke went silent for a moment.
“Maybe one day, we’ll find a life for ourselves far away from here,” he began, running his fingers through your hair soothingly. “Forget about who our parents are, and spend the rest of our days living like mortals.”
“We’d be hunted constantly,” you pointed out bitterly. “I attract too many monsters. We’d never live a peaceful, domestic life.”
“Let’s not focus on the hypotheticals then,” Luke said. “Let’s focus on what we can do to help you right now. Don’t listen to anything that Chiron said, okay? He thinks that trying to be more like the others will make you happier, but he doesn’t know you like I do. Forcing yourself to be someone else will only make you feel more miserable. And remember, you have good friends who love you for the way you are, like Annabeth and Chris. And, of course, you have me.”
You gave him a small smile. “Okay.”
Luke took your hand. “Good. Now, let’s go get something to eat.“
With that, you and Luke walked to the dining pavilion hand-in-hand. You were still slightly upset, but for now, you were going to try to let it go.
Howrver, you couldn’t help but start to plot revenge against Julian Arroco.
Little did you know that both of you had revenge running across your minds.
________________________________________________
Wringing out your hair with a towel, you internally lamented about the humidity in the air. The gods were able to manipulate the weather within the camp borders in order to maintain the ideal temperature, but it never felt quite right to you. Perhaps it was because your body temperature was unusually low. You’d always assumed it was an inherited trait from your father.
And you never wanted to meet him, so you were content with never confirming it.
Carefully folding up your towel, you slid on your sandals and exited the bathroom. You had always hated sharing showers with the other campers. It felt like a huge intrusion on your privacy, and the water was often lukewarm, leading to a less-than-enjoyable experience.
The outside world may invite monsters to kill you at every waking moment, but at least it had decent showers.
Ever since Luke had planted the idea of leaving camp for good in your head earlier, it had been the sole focus of your thoughts. What would life be like with him outside of Camp Half-Blood? Would you be able to find some resemblance of a normal life and escape the stigma that surrounded you? Or would you endure different kinds of prejudice, and never truly feel safe in public?
You knew it was useless thinking about it so profoundly. Realistically, you knew wouldn’t be leaving camp any time soon.
But that did nothing to stop you from fantasizing.
.
.
.
You and Luke fell asleep almost instantly that night, ready for a full night of rest.
But while Luke slumbered soundly, his head resting on your chest, you were wide awake.
Though your body was exhausted, your mind wouldn’t stop racing. You’d never been so tempted to pack up your things and leave camp forever. But you wouldn’t ever just abandon Luke like that. After being abandoned and neglected by his father, you knew that it would destroy him.
The only solution would be for him to come with you.
And you weren’t sure that he would want to. He wouldn’t want to leave behind his siblings, or Annabeth. Nor would he enjoy being homeless again, like he was for five years of his childhood.
So you would stay at camp. For Luke. Because you couldn’t imagine life without him.
Closing your eyes, you let out a heavy sigh. Worrying about this was futile. You needed rest, desperately.
You allowed your muscles to relax, and your limbs suddenly felt like lead.
You were teetering on the edge of sleep when Luke jolted violently in your arms, and sat up abruptly.
His eyes were frantic, and they were brimming with frightened tears. When his pupils met yours, you knew that something was incredibly wrong.
“Hey,” you whispered soothingly. “I’m here, Luke. It was just a dream, you’re okay.”
Luke shook his head vehemently.
“I-It wasn’t. Someone…Someone spoke to me.”
Your eyes narrowed. “Was it your father bothering you again? I swear, I’ll march up to Olympus and tell him to-“
“It wasn’t him,” Luke cut you off. His breath was shaky, so you took his hand in an attempt to calm him.
“Who was it then? Zeus? Hades? The Fates?”
He shook his head again.
“Please,” you begged. “Please tell me. I can’t help you if you hide it from me.”
There was a heart-wrenching pause. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Luke spoke.
DISCLAIMER: I don’t own The Hunger Games franchise, the images above, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, or any of the characters in this fic other than Bellova, Drusilla, and Oliveria. I also do not condone the beliefs or actions of Coriolanus or Bellova.
Summary: Gym class gets heated in a multitude of ways.
⚠️Warnings⚠️: swearing, violence, mentions of injury, allusions to sex, slut shaming, bullying(?)
A/n: This takes place one school years before TBOSAS occurs, (the equivalent of their junior year of high school). Also, I HIGHLY recommend you catch up on my series, A Lady Made of Snow, before reading this.
“Damn, Plinth, how are you so good at this?”
Sejanus laughed, releasing his hands from the metal bar and landing solidly on his feet. “I train at home when I have free time. Pa always said that a man’s strength is split between physicality and mentality.”
Bellova rolled her eyes playfully. “I wouldn’t know, my father always said that brains are far more valuable than brawn.”
Sejanus walked over to the bench where she was sitting and picked up his gym towel, dabbing it across his forehead to rid it of sweat. “Your turn, Bellova.”
She sighed, tightening the neat ponytail that kept her long black hair out of her face. She would much rather be working on that history essay that was assigned this morning. But for now, she had to do as many pull-ups as she could in one minute while Sejanus held a timer.
At least she excelled in gym class. Professor Aggrippina Sickle consistently praised her for her skills. She was flexible, strong, and nimble, all the traits needed to make a quality athlete. Though she didn’t hate the physical education period, it wasn’t exactly her favorite. Sickle worked every student hard, pushing them to their limits.
About ten pull-ups in, Bellova saw Coriolanus walk up to Sejanus, taking a seat next to him. This was quite unusual, it was usually Sejanus who initiated conversations, not the other way around.
Clearly, Coriolanus was up to no good.
As soon as the timer in Sejanus’s hand went off, Bellova let go of the bar and strode towards the two boys. Their gym clothes consisted of a loose tank top and shorts, which were mainly academy red with a hint of gold near the edges of the fabric. They weren’t very flattering, but Sejanus and Coriolanus still managed to look good. If their lives had played out differently, she would’ve been quite flustered being so physically close to them.
The girl’s clothes were slightly better in Bellova’s opinion. The tank tops were similar to the boys’, but instead of shorts, they had skirts with built-in shorts underneath.
The only thing Bellova didn’t like about them was the stares she got as soon as she walked out of the girl’s locker room.
Bellova only stopped walking when she was inches from Coriolanus’s legs. “Get up, I was sitting here earlier.”
The blond rolled his eyes. “I’m not an Avox, you can’t just order me around.”
Instead of continuing to bicker, Bellova simply turned around and placed herself in between her two classmates.
Sejanus and Coriolanus exchanged glances, but didn’t attempt to shoo her away. They knew that if they did, they’d each walk away with painful bruises.
“I’m so fucking bored,” Bellova complained, inspecting her nails for any signs of damage. “I wish that Professor Sickle didn’t make us stay here until everyone is done with her drills. I could have gotten started on the history project, or that essay that was assigned this morning.”
“The essay should be easy,” Sejanus said. “Professor Click said it only needed to be two pages long.”
Bellova shrugged. “True, but you know I love to go above and beyond.”
Sejanus looked up at the clock that hung just above the gymnasium doors. “Well, the period ends in two minutes, you won’t have to wait much longer.”
“Good,” Bellova said, turning to Coriolanus to give him a snide look. “Both of you desperately need showers.”
Coriolanus scowled back. “You have no concept of manners.”
“And you think you do?”
“Watch it,” Coriolanus spat. “Or I’ll-“
His threat was promptly cut off when he noticed a girl storming up to them.
“Oliviera,” Bellova said, giving her a sickly sweet smile. “How can I help you?”
The girl in question glanced at Coriolanus, then Sejanus, and finally locked gazes with Bellova again.
“Whoring yourself out again, I see.”
Bellova looked shocked, which was a rare sight to behold. “Excuse me?”
“First you fucked Felix, and now these two?”
Coriolanus watched, speechless, as Bellova’s face turned pink. “What the hell are you talking about? I went to the gala with him at the end of the last school year, and that was it. We never even dated.”
“Oh, please,” Oliviera said smugly. “You obviously slept with him. I saw you get in his father’s limousine and head towards the Presidential Palace. Tell me, why did you do it?”
“You’re a fucking liar,” Bellova hissed. “I slept in my own bed that night, thank you very much. Coriolanus can vouch for me, he was there when my car arrived.”
Bellova shot Coriolanus a look, as if to say ‘back me up.’
He cleared his throat. “Yeah, yeah I was.”
Bellova bit back a grin, trying to conceal her relief that he had actually helped her out.
“Now that that’s settled,” she began, giving Oliviera a sharp glare. “Don’t ever ask about my personal life again. In fact, don’t even fucking speak to me, or I’ll ruin you and your family.”
Oliviera’s pale, pointed face contorted into an expression of rage. She raised her right hand, ready to strike Bellova across the face.
“Woah,” Sejanus said, instinctively placing an arm in front of Bellova. “Leave her alone, Oliviera. She hasn’t done anything wrong.”
“Sejanus, I can handle this,” Bellova snapped, standing up abruptly.
“Bellova,” Coriolanus said, grabbing her wrist. “Don’t. You’ll get in trouble with Professor Sickle.”
Bellova pulled out of his grip, giving him a warning look. “Don’t get in my way, Coryo. Trust me, you’ll wanna stay out of th-“
Oliviera suddenly grabbed a fistful of her hair and yanked her forward, promptly cutting her off.
Bellova screamed, causing every head in the room to turn to her. Oliviera harshly tugged on her ebony locks once more, and delivered a mediocre but effective punch to her cheek.
“Get off of me!” Bellova cried, trying to push her assailant away.
Sejanus was the first one to come to Bellova’s aid, freeing her from Oliviera’s iron grip. Coriolanus found himself standing up as well, grabbing Bellova by the shoulders gently and moving her several feet away from the other girl.
She was deadly silent, which frightened Coriolanus slightly. He was worried that her rage was building up, and that he’d be the target when it finally boiled over.
Professor Sickle was now rushing over to where Sejanus and Oliviera stood. She demanded an explanation from Oliviera, but she refused to speak. Instead, Sejanus told the professor what had happened, but left out all of the sensitive information.
Bellova could hear Professor Sickle scolding Oliviera, and didn’t even try to bite back her grin. The bitch was going to get what she deserved.
Oliviera ordered to go to the dean’s office, so she headed out of the gymnasium, dragging her feet. Then, the professor approached Coriolanus and Bellova.
“Are you alright, Miss Reginelle?” she asked, gently moving Bellova’s hair out of the way to reveal the bruise forming on her cheek. “Oh dear, we need to get some ice on that. Mister Snow, can you take her to the nurse’s office while I dismiss the rest of the class?”
Coriolanus nodded, and beckoned for Bellova to follow him. She did so reluctantly, avoiding his gaze.
The walk to the school infirmary was…tense, to say the least. Bellova held a hand up to her cheek, covering the purple and blue mark on her face. As they passed by, several Academy students gave them strange looks.
They weren’t used to seeing them within a foot of each other and not arguing.
Coriolanus pretended to ignore it, but it bothered him. He didn’t like feeling judged. He also hated rumors, as they were beyond his control.
But he kept walking, keeping his gaze straightforward as he and Bellova approached their destination. He refused to let her or anyone else know he was perturbed by the attention they were receiving.
Finally, Coriolanus spotted the infirmary doors. Politely opening them for Bellova, he followed behind her once she’d entered the room.
“Miss Drusilla,” Coriolanus began, approaching the middle-aged woman dressed in white who was sitting behind a desk. “Bellova was attacked during gym class. She needs a cold press for her face, and perhaps some ointment to help with the swelling.”
Bellova was quickly ushered into a plus chair by Miss Drusilla, and instructed to stay put until she returned with the ice. Coriolanus stood next to her, feeling quite awkward. What was there to say?
He cleared his throat. “I’m surprised that you didn’t really fight back.”
Bellova sighed. “I wanted to pin the attack solely on Oliviera. I don’t want any blemishes on my academic record.” She gave him a wry smile. “That would give you a leg up, and I can’t have that, can I?”
He laughed. “Of course. You’d never give me the upper hand willingly.”
She gave him a cheeky grin that very nearly made him blush. “You know me so well.”
Coriolanus expression then turned more serious, his pink lips curling downwards slightly. “But seriously, that girl was out of her mind.”
“She’s a jealous bitch, always has been,” Bellova said. “She desperately wants to get laid, and thinks that I’m stealing boys away from her or something ridiculous like that.”
“Ah.” Coriolanus never quite understood the reasoning behind girls’ rampant jealousy. Wouldn’t it be simpler to just focus on themselves? He supposed he’d never really know.
Bellova sighed, turning her head away from Coriolanus. She thought back to what Oliviera had said right after claiming she’d had sex with Felix Ravinstill.
She accused Bellova of sleeping with Coriolanus and Sejanus. And, even worse, she implied she’d fucked them both at the same time.
It was an absurd assumption, really. Everyone knew that Bellova had a less-than-healthy relationship with the Snow heir. They exchanged horrible insults, and went out of their way to provoke each other. There were some times, like now, where there was peace between them. But those moments were becoming rarer as time passed on.
It was obvious that she wasn’t extremely fond of Sejanus Plinth either. He was a nice boy, but he was district. If he hasn’t been born in District Two, she would have considered him a close friend. Bellova couldn’t be too closely associated with him, or people would talk.
Miss Drusilla returned with a small bag full of ice and a small jar. She placed the bag in Bellova’s hands. “Keep that on your face for about ten minutes, and then apply the ointment after.”
Bellova nodded, doing as she was told. “Thank you,” she said quietly.
“Of course, dear.” The nurse then turned to Coriolanus. “You can head to your next class, Mister Snow.”
He nodded, and looked at the injured girl before him. “See you tomorrow.”
She didn’t reply, simply giving him a small nod, half of her face hidden by the ice.
The bruise was painful, but the cold demeanor that Coriolanus gave her somehow hurt even more.
When the phone in Bellova’s room rang, she immediately picked it up. She assumed either Persephone or Lysistrata wanted to check in her. After all, they were there when the incident took place, but were on the opposite side do the gym when it occurred.
“Hey,” she said into the speaker, her tone casual and relaxed.
“Hello, this is Bellova, right?”
Her body tensed immediately. It was Coryo.
“How did you get my number?”
Bellova winced. She hasn’t meant to come off so aggrssively, but when she was caught off-guard, it happened naturally.
“Sejanus,” he answered simply.
“Ah.”
Fuck, this was awkward. Bellova took a deep breath, and then spoke again.
“Why exactly are you calling me?”
“I just…wanted to check in with you. I assume the bruise will heal up soon?”
“Yeah,” she sighed. “As long as I keep icing it and applying that ointment Drusilla gave me, it will be gone in a week or so.”
“Good,” Coriolanus said stiffly. “I also wanted to inform you that after you left the campus, I found out that Oliviera was suspended for two weeks as a consequence for her actions. When she returns, she’ll be closely supervised.”
Bellova rolled her eyes. “That doesn’t seem harsh enough. But if she fucks with me again, she’ll really get what was coming to her.”
Coriolanus’s laugh rang in her ear, and she found herself grinning like an idiot. Quickly forcing the smile to fade, she added, “I appreciate you backing me up earlier.”
“Of course,” he replied. “It was the right thing to do.”
“Careful, Coryo,” she said teasingly. “It’s starting to sound like you care about me.”
She could practically see him rolling his eyes. “Trust me, that’s not what I was trying to convey.”
Bellova felt her fondness for him fade immediately. “Whatever. I need to go, I have homework to do and so do you.”
Coriolanus hummed. “Alright. I’ll leave you too it.”
“Bye.”
Bellova set the phone back on the receiver a bit too harshly, and collapsed backwards onto her mattress dramatically.
Just when she thought he was trying to be being nice to her, he metaphorically slammed the door in her face.
But that was just how Coriolanus was. He’d show hints of affection and care, and then turned cold. She wasn’t sure why, but she suspected that he was afraid to be vulnerable. She sympathized with that, but the constant game of hot-and-cold was irritating.
Why couldn’t he at least try to be more consistently considerate?
‘Stop it,’ she chided herself. ‘It doesn’t fucking matter. He’s always been like this and that’ll never change. Now, we have homework to finish.’
With that, she pushed herself off of her bed and headed to her desk. She sat down on her plush chair and opened the drawer designated for writing materials. Retrieving several sheets of paper and a fountain pen, she took a deep breath and began to write, ignoring the throbbing on her cheek from the escapades that had occurred earlier.
Strangely, the bruise didn’t feel like something to be ashamed of. It felt like a battle wound, something that showed she could handle herself.
It further proved that she was strong, resilient, a true Reginelle through and through.
“Damn, Plinth, how are you so good at this?”
Sejanus laughed, releasing his hands from the metal bar and landing solidly on his feet. “I train at home when I have free time. Pa always said that a man’s strength is split between physicality and mentality.”
Bellova rolled her eyes playfully. “I wouldn’t know, my father always said that brains are far more valuable than brawn.”
Sejanus walked over to the bench where she was sitting and picked up his gym towel, dabbing it across his forehead to rid it of sweat. “Your turn, Bellova.”
She sighed, tightening the neat ponytail that kept her long black hair out of her face. She would much rather be working on that history essay that was assigned this morning. But for now, she had to do as many pull-ups as she could in one minute while Sejanus held a timer.
At least she excelled in gym class. Professor Aggrippina Sickle consistently praised her for her skills. She was flexible, strong, and nimble, all the traits needed to make a quality athlete. Though she didn’t hate the physical education period, it wasn’t exactly her favorite. Sickle worked every student hard, pushing them to their limits.
About ten pull-ups in, Bellova saw Coriolanus walk up to Sejanus, taking a seat next to him. This was quite unusual, it was usually Sejanus who initiated conversations, not the other way around.
Clearly, Coriolanus was up to no good.
As soon as the timer in Sejanus’s hand went off, Bellova let go of the bar and strode towards the two boys. Their gym clothes consisted of a loose tank top and shorts, which were mainly academy red with a hint of gold near the edges of the fabric. They weren’t very flattering, but Sejanus and Coriolanus still managed to look good. If their lives had played out differently, she would’ve been quite flustered being so physically close to them.
The girl’s clothes were slightly better in Bellova’s opinion. The tank tops were similar to the boys’, but instead of shorts, they had skirts with built-in shorts underneath.
The only thing Bellova didn’t like about them was the stares she got as soon as she walked out of the girl’s locker room.
Bellova only stopped walking when she was inches from Coriolanus’s legs. “Get up, I was sitting here earlier.”
The blond rolled his eyes. “I’m not an Avox, you can’t just order me around.”
Instead of continuing to bicker, Bellova simply turned around and placed herself in between her two classmates.
Sejanus and Coriolanus exchanged glances, but didn’t attempt to shoo her away. They knew that if they did, they’d each walk away with painful bruises.
“I’m so fucking bored,” Bellova complained, inspecting her nails for any signs of damage. “I wish that Professor Sickle didn’t make us stay here until everyone is done with her drills. I could have gotten started on the history project, or that essay that was assigned this morning.”
“The essay should be easy,” Sejanus said. “Professor Click said it only needed to be two pages long.”
Bellova shrugged. “True, but you know I love to go above and beyond.”
Sejanus looked up at the clock that hung just above the gymnasium doors. “Well, the period ends in two minutes, you won’t have to wait much longer.”
“Good,” Bellova said, turning to Coriolanus to give him a snide look. “Both of you desperately need showers.”
Coriolanus scowled back. “You have no concept of manners.”
“And you think you do?”
“Watch it,” Coriolanus spat. “Or I’ll-“
His threat was promptly cut off when he noticed a girl storming up to them.
“Oliviera,” Bellova said, giving her a sickly sweet smile. “How can I help you?”
The girl in question glanced at Coriolanus, then Sejanus, and finally locked gazes with Bellova again.
“Whoring yourself out again, I see.”
Bellova looked shocked, which was a rare sight to behold. “Excuse me?”
“First you fucked Felix, and now these two?”
Coriolanus watched, speechless, as Bellova’s face turned pink. “What the hell are you talking about? I went to the gala with him at the end of the last school year, and that was it. We never even dated.”
“Oh, please,” Oliviera said smugly. “You obviously slept with him. I saw you get in his father’s limousine and head towards the Presidential Palace. Tell me, why did you do it?”
“You’re a fucking liar,” Bellova hissed. “I slept in my own bed that night, thank you very much. Coriolanus can vouch for me, he was there when my car arrived.”
Bellova shot Coriolanus a look, as if to say ‘back me up.’
He cleared his throat. “Yeah, yeah I was.”
Bellova bit back a grin, trying to conceal her relief that he had actually helped her out.
“Now that that’s settled,” she began, giving Oliviera a sharp glare. “Don’t ever ask about my personal life again. In fact, don’t even fucking speak to me, or I’ll ruin you and your family.”
Oliviera’s pale, pointed face contorted into an expression of rage. She raised her right hand, ready to strike Bellova across the face.
“Woah,” Sejanus said, instinctively placing an arm in front of Bellova. “Leave her alone, Oliviera. She hasn’t done anything wrong.”
“Sejanus, I can handle this,” Bellova snapped, standing up abruptly.
“Bellova,” Coriolanus said, grabbing her wrist. “Don’t. You’ll get in trouble with Professor Sickle.”
Bellova pulled out of his grip, giving him a warning look. “Don’t get in my way, Coryo. Trust me, you’ll wanna stay out of th-“
Oliviera suddenly grabbed a fistful of her hair and yanked her forward, promptly cutting her off.
Bellova screamed, causing every head in the room to turn to her. Oliviera harshly tugged on her ebony locks once more, and delivered a mediocre but effective punch to her cheek.
“Get off of me!” Bellova cried, trying to push her assailant away.
Sejanus was the first one to come to Bellova’s aid, freeing her from Oliviera’s iron grip. Coriolanus found himself standing up as well, grabbing Bellova by the shoulders gently and moving her several feet away from the other girl.
She was deadly silent, which frightened Coriolanus slightly. He was worried that her rage was building up, and that he’d be the target when it finally boiled over.
Professor Sickle was now rushing over to where Sejanus and Oliviera stood. She demanded an explanation from Oliviera, but she refused to speak. Instead, Sejanus told the professor what had happened, but left out all of the sensitive information.
Bellova could hear Professor Sickle scolding Oliviera, and didn’t even try to bite back her grin. The bitch was going to get what she deserved.
Oliviera ordered to go to the dean’s office, so she headed out of the gymnasium, dragging her feet. Then, the professor approached Coriolanus and Bellova.
“Are you alright, Miss Reginelle?” she asked, gently moving Bellova’s hair out of the way to reveal the bruise forming on her cheek. “Oh dear, we need to get some ice on that. Mister Snow, can you take her to the nurse’s office while I dismiss the rest of the class?”
Coriolanus nodded, and beckoned for Bellova to follow him. She did so reluctantly, avoiding his gaze.
The walk to the school infirmary was…tense, to say the least. Bellova held a hand up to her cheek, covering the purple and blue mark on her face. As they passed by, several Academy students gave them strange looks.
They weren’t used to seeing them within a foot of each other and not arguing.
Coriolanus pretended to ignore it, but it bothered him. He didn’t like feeling judged. He also hated rumors, as they were beyond his control.
But he kept walking, keeping his gaze straightforward as he and Bellova approached their destination. He refused to let her or anyone else know he was perturbed by the attention they were receiving.
Finally, Coriolanus spotted the infirmary doors. Politely opening them for Bellova, he followed behind her once she’d entered the room.
