The Theory is the pseudonym for writer/director team Tom Jenkins and Simon Sharp. They blew up on the internets with their stop-motion Google Street View journey,Address Is Approximate. Their latest personal project, Speed of Light, takes advantage of tiny pico projectors to create the world’s tiniest police chase.
In Beauty is Embarrassing, director Neil Berkeley and his subject, Wayne White, create one of the funniest, most thoughtful, and well-articulated documentaries of the highs and lows that face all professional artists that I have ever seen. The film explores balancing work and personal life, the fickle nature of success, and what motivates us to keep going with our often difficult jobs. Not to make it sound like a serious affair – as you’ll see from the trailer, it’s impossible to spend time with Wayne White and not laugh your ass off.

For those of you who aren't hip to the streetwear scene, "SUPER" is Retrosuperfuture's flagship line of sunglasses. Milan-based brothers David and Simon Beckerman launched the company in 2007, a new venture for the publishers of an independent fashion and music magazine, to fill a space in the high-end eyewear market. The minimal acetate frames are made in Italy with Zeiss lenses start at roughly €99 and are built to last (though I'm sure many of you share my habit of losing or breaking shades on a regular basis). They've recently produced a manufacturing video in what has become agrand tradition over the past couple years. The clip traces a pair of sunglasses' journey from cellulose powder to finished product:
The Alphabet 2- a horn book video experiment - is a developmental spelling - video where each character visually represents the meaning of the word itself. Playing with different techniques and materials into little and big spaces, but always focusing on Helvetica font's proportions. A collection of words in a delightful spelling-video.
Directed by Ludovic Houplan & Hervé de Crécy Remind me won the 2002 MTV Europe Music Award for best music video.

Today poetic design is based on a plethora of complex criteria: human experience, social behaviors, global, economic and political issues, physical and mental interaction, form, vision, and a rigorous understanding and desire for contemporary culture. Manufacturing is based on another collective group of criteria: capital investment, market share, production ease, dissemination, growth, distribution, maintenance, service, performance, quality, ecological issues and sustainability. The combination of these factors shape our objects, inform our forms, our physical space, visual culture and our contemporary human experience. These quantitative constructs shape business, identity, brand and value. This is the business of beauty. Every business should be completely concerned with beauty - it is after all a collective human need.
I believe that we could be living in an entirely different world - one that is full of real contemporary inspiring objects, spaces, places, worlds, spirits and experiences. Design has been the cultural shaper of our world from the start. We have designed systems, cities, and commodities. We have addressed the world’s problems. Now design is not about solving problems, but about a rigorous beautification of our built environments. Design is about the betterment of our lives poetically, aesthetically, experientially, sensorially, and emotionally. My real desire is to see people live in the modus of our time, to participate in the contemporary world, and to release themselves from nostalgia, antiquated traditions, old rituals, kitsch and the meaningless. We should be conscious and attune with this world in this moment. If human nature is to live in the past - to change the world is to change human nature.
