Paul McCartney watches his father’s horse, Drake’s Drum, at Aintree Racecourse, 26 March 1966
In July 1964, Paul McCartney bought a racehorse named Drake’s Drum for £1,200 as a gift for his father. After the premiere of A Hard Day’s Night, Paul McCartney went to celebrate his father’s 62nd birthday in London. They were at the party at The Dorchester Hotel, and as midnight turned into 7th July, he presented his father with a framed photo of a horse, which his father thanked him for, but Paul surprised him by telling him that the gift was actually the horse in the photo
On 26 March 1966, Paul, Jim, Angie and Mike McCartney went to Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool to watch Drake’s Drum win the Huyton Plate, a race that preceded the famous Grand National. Drake’s Drum won another race at Newbury Racecourse in November 1966
Years later, Paul retired Drake’s Drum to his High Park Farm in Scotland
