The Band

This is Bernard and Brett. Bernard is a shy, somewhat mousy, very eccentric boy who just happens to be one of the most esteemed rock guitar players since Johnny Marr. Brett is arguably the finest singer of his ‘90s UK pop / rock peers and one of the last great frontmen to boot. He’s a huge fan of his own band. They may look like rentboys but they’re clearly two special and talented young men.

This is Mat and Simon. Together they make up the Suede rhythm section. Mat plays the bass and is the longest running member of the band, alongside Brett. He is very, very tall and his bass playing is somewhat overlooked, in my opinion.  Simon plays the drums and beat out Mike Joyce of the Smiths to do so. Simon came out by declaring himself “a bisexual man who’s never had a heterosexual experience,” a twist on Brett controversially claiming to be “a bisexual man who’s never had a homosexual experience.” Both look fairly devious but are widely considered to be nice guys. 

This is Richard and Neil. Richard replaced Bernard at the ripe old age of 17 and definitely did not know what he was getting himself into. Neil came along in 1996, serving as keyboardist, back up singer, and champion starer. Their joint cuteness worked well with the sunnier vibe of Suede’s first post-Butler album, Coming Up, but they also seem to have grown into classy guys. 

All in all, I think this band has something for everyone.
