Value Designing

. As a designer I am interested in how design can improve our lives and why. Value engineering is about taking something existing and finding ways to make it more economical and effiecient. Value Designing is about creating something new that adds value. Both are important in successful design, however I am particularly interested in Value Designing and how it can makes things more useful, pleasurable and beautiful for people.

There is something very satisfying about the use of ceramics and wood in this espresso machine by Arvid Häusser. Porcelain is a very domestic material that has durability and the wood adds visual warmth and practical insulation. Materials are very telling in the value of something not just materially but also psychologically. I also like the way the components and process are shown visually in the design. Its all the usual pieces that makes up an espresso machine but reconfigured in an entirely new way.
