Meryl listened to him and nodded. “I think so too.” She said. Unknown to people, she did have feelings for someone she had worked with. She just didn’t know if that person had the same kind of feelings for her.

“You’re thinking about someone right now, aren’t you?” he asked with a smile. “I know that look. I’ve worn that look myself in the past. So who exactly are you daydreaming about? A house in the Hamptons? Grandchildren at your feet?”

“Sorry?“ She said, looking confused. “Oh…no. I mean…Not straight away.“ She told him. “This wine is clearly affecting me.“ Meryl laughed. “I agree about having to settle the past first.“

Ha laughed at the thought of the wine throwing the woman off. Paul leaned back and nodded agreement. “I guess we all want to move on, to find someone who’ll love us like we do them. But I think that right person is out there for both of us.”

Meryl nodded as he said this. “I do feel happier. Maybe not straight after it all, but now, yes, I do.” She told him. “And if someone came along, I could be happy.”

His head quirked to the side as his fingers played with the glass sitting in front of him. “What do you mean, maybe not straight after all?” asked Paul curiously. “I think you have to settle your past before you can move on into the future. So that’s a good plan.”

“I guess so.“ Meryl said as she looked at him. “Its better than it coming as a big shock. Myself, my ex and our children knew it was coming. I think the only people it came as a shock to was the public.“

Nodding along with her, Paul gave the woman a look of sympathy. “It’s tough. More with you and the kids. But you have to ask yourself... are you happier now? Do you feel like your life can move on and you could be happy finding someone new?”

“It is okay. Near the end, I kind of knew it was coming.“ Meryl said. “I mean, it doesn’t make it any easier but it wasn’t like it came as a shock.“ She looked down at her drink before looking back at him again.

“I understand that,” he agreed with a nod. “I think that you know things are going to end, it’s just a matter of making your peace with that and accepting that it’s destiny.”

“is it the shadowhunters?” she asked as she was heading to the kitchen. “I think that it’s so cool. you and ian took a chance to do this and I don’t know what about him but I believe that you are the still best director.” candice gave him her sweet smile and then turned to the coffee machine to make a coffee for both of them. “florence helped me to make a few cupcakes so don’t be terrified of those shapes you see on a plate. they are not perfect but I bet that they taste the best! she put a lot of chocolate in there.” chuckling, she brought him a cup with his coffee.      

He nodded. “Damn young kids. They’re keeping me busy, though,” he grinned as he headed inside with the blonde and took a seat at the table. “You’ve always been my biggest supporter and fan. And I appreciate you.” He gave her a smile and raised an eyebrow at the cupcakes. “I think that she has a sweet tooth, just like her mother,” Paul replied. He took a sip of the bitter liquid, nodding approval before he looked to her. “I’m hoping that now we can maybe start spending a little more time together. If you’re interested, that is...”

“Well, I was married for over 30 years so you never expect something like that to end.“ She said. “At least my kids are older.“ Meryl looked at him. “It was about a year ago.“ She told Paul. “Just over a year.”

He nodded along with her story, finishing off his drink. “That’s... that’s a long time. I can’t imagine what that would feel like, thirty years with someone and then it ends... I’m so sorry.”

“Yeah…they manage it anyway. I’m not sure how busy it is but they seem to make it from one place to another easily enough.“ Meryl told him. “I am glad I get to keep that as well.“ She smiled at him. She picked up her drink and sipped it.

Paul put his chin on his palm and angled himself towards her. “Divorce has to be hard... it may have been one of the reasons Torrey - my ex wife - and I never had kids. I guess I felt that something was wrong and didn’t want to put my kids through that. How long ago did you get divorced?”

“Well, I wouldn’t say close but same part of New York. “ Meryl replied. She listened and nodded. “It is pretty tough.“

Nodding in agreement, he took another sip of his drink. “Okay, that makes sense. I mean, you can get across Manhattan in a day, right? Though the traffic there sometimes,” chuckled Paul with a shake of his head. “Still I think it’s pretty incredible that you get together with them and keep that family feeling.”

candice blushed a little bit. well - quite a lot. “maybe she will?” she said as she shrugged a little bit insecure. “your divorce, my divorce. I guess that we are in this together.” she shrugged with a slight sight. “I have never thought that something like this could happen to me.” she admitted silently.

Paul took both of her hands in his own now, gripping them as his thumbs ran along the backs gently. “We are in this together I suppose... at least we get to understand each other.” Paul gave her a look of sympathy about the events of her life - the same one he was sure she gave him before. “You’re young, beautiful and talented. This is not the end, but just the beginning. And he won’t be the last man you love.”

“really?” she asked as he squeezed their hands. “I don’t know. the thirty year old candice is quite pessimistic lately - well, not pessimistic. I would say that she is moody and sometimes a little bit naive. but well - that’s my permanent trait. and she still doesn’t know what she wants. I can’t still decide if I want chicken burger or chicken wrap at mcdonalds.“ she admitted as a smile was playing with her lips. “yeah, I can do something better but I promised you those socks, didn’t I?” 

Slowly he nodded. “I understand her being pessimistic. I went through that phase myself after my divorce, remember? As I recall, it was a certain pretty blonde who got me through it...” shrugged Paul, indicating Candice. “So maybe she’ll let me return the favor and remind her all the good things she is?” offered the actor as he tilted his head. “You did promise me socks. But they can wait until we both get... older, don’t you think?”

candice laughed as he was talking. he has always made her laugh. that was one of the things that made him so special to her. “If I was ten years younger and had an empty house I would say yes. there probably would be some big party with many people and with some cheap booze but the twenty years old candice is gone and my thirty years old self says that there won’t be any big plans. I will probably stay at home with some good wine while I will be cleaning, knitting or simply sleeping.” she shrugged.

Paul smiled. He loved hearing that laugh, seeing the way her eyes lit up when she did so. She was beautiful. And he figured he was way out of his depth right now. They’d left things between them in a vacuum as she returned to her marriage. That meant now they were... He didn’t know. He gave their collective hands a squeeze. “I like the thirty year old Candice, though. Settled. Knows what she wants and is content to do things her own way. Though you can do something better than cleaning or knitting. Sleeping is pretty high up there on the ‘good’ list.”

“Yeah, we all get together at Christmas. Since I got divorced, they will ever spend the first half of the day with their dad then me, or the other way around.“ She said. “As long as we are in the same city.“

“So your ex lives close to you?” asked Paul curiously. He was still lucky to be from a fairly nuclear family, but could understand the struggle of trying to balance schedules and work. “I suppose when someone has your schedule it’s tough to get real ‘face’ time,” grinned the man. “So I guess I’m lucky!”

“It is pretty tough. But if we know that we are all going to be pretty busy like that, we will Skype or Facetime.“ Meryl told him. “At least I get to see them even if it isn’t physically in the same place.“ Meryl added.

“That’s really cool. It’s nice to be so close to your children and family. Sometimes in today’s world we forget that. I guess everyone still gathers at Christmas and the big holidays?” Paul asked, sipping a bit more of his drink. “I don’t have any famous siblings, but I know that at times I have to miss holiday gatherings because of work commitments.”

“well…..that’s a good wonder. I don’t think that I have a proper answer for that. either santa was very very busy in that time of the year or you were a bad boy.“ she tried to conjure up a smile on her face. “woow, if I wasn’t your friend or just a random girl in a bar I would thought that you were flirting with me.” she placed her hand on his hand which was still on her forearm. “thank you. thank you for that and for everything. and I promise you that I will knit you some pair of socks”

“Probably a bad boy,” he admitted with a nod. They didn’t have to say it, each knew that there was a time when the other was ‘bad’... with each other. Still, he held her arm firm. “Shut up, I would never flirt with you,” Paul teased her. “You’re atrocious looking and smell funny.” He smirked, squeezing her forearm in his own. As her hand fell atop his, his other covered hers once more. It seemed that no matter what, he wanted to be near her. “Anytime...” He’d really do anything for Candice, Paul knew he was in deep when it came to the blonde. “So big plans for the night?”
