Les Mis + Onion Headlines, because I had to. (2/?)
(screencaps from here)
Some canon Enjolras moments that arenāt just him being āhotā and āangryā
He genuinely hates that he has to kill in order to bring about the revolution. He says āDeath, I use you but I hate you.ā He believes that there will be no murder in the future and that the āhuman race will love.ā He understands the value of everyoneās life, and he even cries when he shoots a guard. Ā
He calls everyone āCitizenā, the huge nerd.
Enjolras is Feuillyās #1 fan. At one point, he is ranting about how great the future is going to be, and then he just goes āFeuilly is the best, I love Feuilly, everyone needs to be more like Feuillyā and then keeps ranting about justice and equality.Ā
Enjolras knows that everyone on the barricade is going to die, so he asks people to leave. Even though no one actually wants to go, he orders the revolutionaries to save themselves.Ā
So Marius shows up super late to the revolution, and after he threatens to literally blow up the whole barricade with everyone in it heās all like āhey, whoās the leader because Cosette is leaving and I want to join in on this party now.ā and Enjolras responds with, āYouāre the leader.ā Because he thought that what Marius did was noble and heroic or something even though it was actually really stupid.
Bossuet is trying to joke around, and so he says āI admire Enjolras because heās a virgin who doesnāt have a girlfriend.ā And Enjolras just mumbles, āFrance is my girlfriend,ā to himself. N E R D.
SPIDERS GRANTAIRE, or, the best historical discovery i have ever made
so i was searching scanned archives of historical books for references to the names of the amis outside of les mis, like you do, in order to try and find clues for why hugo picked the names that he did. i found a few things (which iāll make a post about later), but i wasnāt having much luck overall⦠until i found this sentenceĀ in a french scientific journal (Cosmos: revue des sciences et de leurs applications) from 1895:
for those of you who donāt speak french, allow me to translate:
A Frenchman by the name of Pierre Grantaire has, near Philadelphia (United States), the largest spiderĀ āfarm.ā
ā¦okay cosmos, you have my attention. the full article is even better:
and another rough translation:
The art of giving bottled wine the appearance of age. - More and more things are counterfeited in our age. This is why there are forged diamonds and other precious stones, ivory, gold, rubber. Now, hereās an example found in the sale of phony old wines, that is, wine stored in bottles having the appearance of age. To make bottles appear older and obtain a better price for their contents, a new industry was created, that of spider cultivation. A Frenchman by the name of Pierre Grantaire has, near Philadelphia (United States), the largest spider āfarm.ā His stock usually consists of thousands of spiders originating mostly from the selection of spiders imported from France.
This industry also exists in the Loire region, but on a smaller scale. There are however ten establishments devoted to the cultivation of spiders in this department. These spiders are sold for around 60 francs per hundred, and the clientele consists of french wine-growers who use them for a clever, if not recommendable, purpose.
Three months after the introduction of 60 francsā worth of spiders to a newly stocked wine cellar, the bottles are covered from cork to cork in spiderwebs. The uneducated person, seeing these bottles completely covered in spiderwebs, naturally concludes that the wine which they contain is old, and so one can get a better price for it.
COUNTERFEIT WINEĀ
SPIDER-FARMER GRANTAIRE
IS A THING
and it gets better ā apparently this story wentĀ āviral,ā in a nineteenth-century sense, appearing throughout different american newspapers and journals, including the scientific fucking american. hereās an excerpt from the story about it in the hartford locomotive:
aka:Ā
āaverage ami raises 3 spiders a yearā factoid actualy just statistical error. average ami eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Grantaire, who lives in pennsylvania & raises over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been countedā
hereās the headline of the san francisco callās article:
HE HAS A MOTHERFUCKING SPIDER FARM.Ā
the text of theĀ article (which we can all read because it isĀ available online, thank the old gods and the new) includes an interview with spiders grantaire, in which he waxes rhapsodically about his charges in exactly the way that you imagine the grantaire of les mis would:
āThey think I feed them now,ā said Pierre, ābut I ford them for you. They have brains, these little creatures. Ah, they are cunning. After you see them and I tell you of them you will not oush them more. You will say, āThe spider can teach me something. I will Watch him. He is a diplomat, an architect, a mathematician. His knowledge is worth having.ā Ah, there is a fine fellcw running on your neck. Donāt knock him off. He will not bite you. They are harmless. He wishes to give you a bon jour and make your acquaintance. [ā¦] āBut what money is there in it, you ask. Men Dieu, money, moneyāalways money. I, who love my pets, to be always thinking of what they sell for! I will tell you now, and then you will talk no more of money, and I can show you something. A customer comes to me. He is a wine merchant from New York or Philadelphia, or perhaps he writes. He says that he has just stocked a cellar with five-year-old port or Burgundy, or something else. The bottles have brushed clean in shipping. They look like new and common. They will not sell for old wine. He has attached to them labels of twenty, thirty or forty years ago, some year of a grand vintage. He tells me so many hundred bottles. I know how many of my pets will soon cover his cellar in cobwebs of the finest old kind. I put them in little small paper boxes, a pair in a box. I ship then, in a crate, with many holes for air. Maybe I send 200, 300 or 400 spiders. For them I ask half a franc each, si, for every hundred. In two months you would think his cellar was not disturbed for the last forty years. It has cost him $40, or $50 maybe, but he may sell the wine for $1,000 āyes, more than thatāabove what it had brought without any pets had dressed the bottles in robes of long ago.ā
one million stories, please, about a grantaire who miraculously survives the barricade and moves to the united states where he starts a spider farm and keeps the flame of the revolution alive by bilking snobby fat cats out of their wine money.
wait
Enjolras died from EIGHT bullet wounds
EIGHT of his best friends died for a cause he led
The death of those he loved was Enjolrasā ultimate downfall
cosette and enjolras braiding each others hair and complaining abt things
Oh, if only theyād held this angle for what we actually saw on screen; my kingdom for Combeferreās little long-suffering warning Marius ⦠when the penguin grabs Enjolrasā arm, and all the kingdoms for this moment when Combeferre just gives up and goes back to his papers and Grantaire determines that this conversation between Marius and Enjolras is the funniest thing he has ever heard in his life.
THIS IS NOT HOW THINGS WORK HERE, MARIUS.
#IT SI TIME FOR US ALL TO DECIDE WHO WE AREĀ #DO WE FIGHT FOR THE RIGHT TO A NIGHT OUT IN THE CLUB NOWĀ (via enjorass)
I love artist!Grantaire in fic but like, even in modern AUs heās usually written as a painter, which is fine and all, lots of people are painters, but I feel like weāre missing out on the beautiful possibilities of Grantaire as a modern day art student in a specialism other than fine art
like illustrator Grantaire who does lovely pictures for childrenās books but wonāt back down from a porn commission if he needs the money and also he and Jehan collaborate to make beautifully eerie illustrated books of poetry together
comic artist Grantaire who vents a lot of his frustrations and self-esteem issues by drawing passive aggressive autobio comics sarcastically portraying his perceived day to day failures but in a funny enough way that theyāre really popular online
graphic designer Grantaire who just sort of pleadingly whispersĀ āHelveticaā every time Les Amis produce yet another leaflet in some indecipherable ugly font
animator Grantaire who shows up to Les Amis meetings looking like heās stared directly into eternity and the others are likeĀ ā???ā because their idea of art school is a bunch of people lying around smoking pot and occasionally throwing paint at a canvas and Grantaire is just likeĀ āIāve been awake for 39 hours and in that time I have drawn over sixty very similar drawings of the same character and that amounts to approximately five seconds of footage and I regret everythingā
There are your usual special features, and then thereās The Young Revolutionaries. (1/3)
the actual reason is enjolras, combeferre, and courfeyrac thought it was cool back in like, 8th grade, and it just kind of. .. . stuck.
(theĀ āEVERYONEāS JUST NAMED JEANā idea is my favorite fandom theory.)
āI said āsome wineā, Marius, not āsome whineā.ā
ā grantaire, probably (via iamsiriusblackserious)
marius pontmercy: [appalled scoffing noises] me? [voice rises three octaves] sensitive?!
Last Words [What they said last in the book]
Joly:Ā āWhat is the cat?ā he exclaimed. āIt is a corrective. TheĀ good God, having made the mouse, said: āHullo! I haveĀ committed a blunder.ā And so he made the cat. The cat isĀ the erratum of the mouse. The mouse, plus the cat, is theĀ proof of creation revised and corrected.
Bossuet: āWhat have you done with your hat?ā Bossuet asked.
Courfeyrac:Ā āThey have finally taken it away from me with cannonballs.ā
Enjolras:Ā āLong live the Republic!ā
Jehan:Ā āVive la France! Long live France! Long live the future!ā
Eponine:Ā āAnd by the way, Monsieur Marius, I believe that I was aĀ little bit in love with you.
Gavroche:Ā āTis the fault ofā¦ā
Combeferre: āThere are people who observe the rules of honor as oneĀ observes the stars, from a great distance.ā
Grantaire: āDo you permit it?ā
Bahorel:Ā āHereās the street in its low-necked dress! How well itĀ looks!ā
Feuilly:Ā āCan any one understand,ā exclaimed Feuilly bitterly,Ā āthose men,Ā whoĀ had promised to join us, and taken an oath to aid us, andĀ who had pledged their honor to it, and who are our generals, and who abandon us!ā
Headcanon: Courfeyrac isĀ great at being a boyfriend. In fact, heās so good that he canāt keep himself from gently meddling in the love lives of his friends. He sends Enjolras reminders to go buy Grantaire Christmas and birthday gifts weeks ahead of time (plus a follow-up reminder one week before, plus a reminder the day before, plus a reminder the morning of), he sends thoughtful present ideas, he sends occasional inspirational have you said something kind today? texts; he isĀ on it. And then he starts doing it for Feuilly, because he wants to help a bro out. And Bahorel. And Eponine. And eventually it becomes a whole cottage industry until thereās really no reason not to hire scheduling genius Combeferre to help him keep all his ~Thoughtful Romance~ reminders on time. And obviously Cosette and Marius are great at this stuffāit only makes sense to bring them on to help with mood boards, gift arrangements, and romantic date plans. And the next thing he knows, he blinks and heās the CEO of an honest-to-God company, all because heās a romantic at heart and really kind of nosy. ā¦but he still has no idea which of his employees has started sending him romantic tips and reminders aboutĀ Combeferre. Heās not even dating Combeferre! Combeferre is 100% not interested in him. Right?
courfius "can i sleep with you" happy almost birthay :)
āCan I sleep with you?ā Marius asks before Courfeyrac even had a chance to say hello.Ā
Heās got a feverish, distracted air on his face that makes Courfeyrac frowns instead of smile at his lack of decorum. Marius often looks like heās completely lost in his own thoughts, something that feels eerily familiar to Courfeyrac as Enjolras is prone to do the same thing, but thereās something different right now - Marius is holding his hands in front of him like he does when heās nervous, and thereās dry blood on his lips, as if heād bitten them too much.Ā
āSure,ā Courfeyrac ends up saying carefully, and opens the door wider.Ā āCome on in.ā
āThanks,ā Marius mutters, sounding vaguely relieved and he walks directly to Courfeyracās room with stiffed movements and disappears inside.Ā
Courfeyrac follows, worried. Heās used to his friends showing up late at night for all kind of reasons - Grantaire, Bossuet, Enjolras and Jehan being his most frequent visitors - but this is the first time since Marius moved out that heās even came here, and his attitude is so odd - odder than usual - that Courfeyrac can only assume that something truly bad happened.Ā
āAre you alright?ā he asks when heās in his room, looking Marius pulls out the spare mattress that Courfeyrac keeps under his bed.Ā
āYes,ā Marius answers, and itās such a blatant lie that they both wince.Ā
