I previously worked at a multimedia company, but because of the war, I lost my job, my home, my car, and now I have no place to live or work.

During the war, we were forced to evacuate more than four times. Each time, we had to leave everything behind without taking any of our personal belongings.

I live in northern Gaza.

We were displaced to southern Gaza, then to Deir al-Balah, then to Rafah, and now we live in an uninhabitable tent that is not suitable for living.

My daughter Rahaf was martyred in the war due to Israeli airstrikes. Now I have Iman, Malak, Basel, and my wife is in her seventh month of pregnancy.

The moon 1/15/25

I had a great time with the moon tonight after the news today.

I watched Wild at heart only twice and felt the need for a smoke and a wander the way you do when you get out of a real movie theater.

I put my pant over my shorts, my sweater over my shirt and my coat over my robe.

Changed my socks and found my mothers tennis shoes and played love me tender till I cried in the bike lane.

The world was so perfectly still, and the light had the star spikes from staring too long, the Astigmatism fuzz and twinkle, I relived my first sense of longing over and over till it swelled it was just me, the DMV, and the big monument TV of the casino sign.

I lifted my head into the first drop of rain a small spat under the orbital. it hit like it was crying back. I shuffled across the street, counting the 20 something lights over devils' lake, and headed under the thin wire holding the traffic lights.

there’s a deep dip of road with a big bright light from the RV park like a great big church so I sat by the power line Angel that was under the great big moon, love me tender still sighing in my ear.

I thought of all the good movies I saw on accident, I thought of all the good ideas I didn’t get to

I thought of all the ideas I didn’t write down too I thought of all the times I’ve made something happen

I thought of the one reason why I stopped making things happen

“Are you gonna get up now kid?” I told myself

“Are you getting up anytime soon?”

Not necessarily from my seated position but I bigger, harder motion, of doing the “thing”

Making the “thing” the reasons I decided to cast away being able to make the “thing”

And that’s when I cried. Not for too long, and not much for me, but just enough to say

“I’m gonna miss you but I’m not gonna be lost”

by the time my second slim had burned I wobbled back up to my feet and put my pocket back together 90% my cigarettes, my phone in my left and before I had checked my right, I saw that the moon has gone. I got a little sad, crossed the road and looked up just to find it right at turn into my complex, tossing and turning under its cloud covers till the glow shone again

I craned my neck a good deal and let the mourning tremble in me, all was ok again cus the moon came out for a little while more, a great beaming tail as it moved across the opening of sky, the small pelts of rain, the thinning veil on earth as I sang in pantomime to it.

For, my darling I love you, and I always will

It was then I realized I had left my lighter in the bike lane.

I crossed back a little quicker to see the street start up again 1, 2, 3 cars like the light were up in the sky, like it was a whole separate place and time, it wasn’t too long till I found it a baby blue Bic right back where I sat with a camera flashlight and the shine again from the moonlight. Right there! right back from where I came! I said, “thank you thank you!” and walked back home a little more resolved.

The last love me tender played out as I walked back inside, staring tenderly into nothing

I slipped off her shoes and put on my house socks

Took of my coat and my robe, my sweater over my shirt and my pants over my shorts as the last strum played out.

I took another look at who else was missing him and saw something even sweeter.

It’s 2AM, it’s the second of January, NTS jazz picks are whistling my laptop and my head is swimming in everything I should’ve, could’ve, would’ve done.

It looks pink but too muscular to be considered outer flesh, it’s a great big pool that smells like heavy chlorine and astigmatism Christmas, bald retina to the waves your making, too big a mosaic when you swim to the bottom. The orange that cuts to sharp the green that’s just too dull the moorish purples, the militant blues. Of course when the colors are too much you could always toss and turn, you can holler great bubbles and muffles, you can thrash about and scream instead of looking under that big blanket of water

Oh dear water, the elemental oxymoron,

The bather, the undertaker, the great hydrate-er

Big flamingo chlorine suicide blanket of my daydreams

It seems I took a punch-up in the deep end instead of the lap track and the great big tile puzzle is staring right back

Spelling out “did you get what you wanted?”

Did I waste all my breath down here at the bottom?

Will I swim up or float?

Will I hold my breath or choke?
