It’s only fair that the employees who are pretty much aware of what his family does are those that stay in North Coast. Everyone else needs to be moved to Edgewater. It would be smart since the whole reason for transition is that their secrets would be kept hidden so obviously, they don’t need as much staff in North Coast.
They certainly don’t need a receptionist, but his plan for transition, his rules. Everyone else can suck it.
Richie invites Poppy to his office to discuss her future employment. Truthfully, his offer at a job was to make up for his mistake, but after being on the receiving end of her kindness – or at least that’s what he hopes those random texts are for – he’s grown to relax somewhat despite the awkwardness between them. Who says exes can’t be friends?
Still, because of that, she’s lumped in with everyone else he has to keep safe and so there’s really no excuse for her to stay in North Coast other than Richie’s need to make sure that no one will get hurt again. Of course there’s also the added bonus that it has been known that she was once the most important person in his life at some point, and so he’s not sure if the target on her has blurred after their end.
“You’re not going to Edgewater,” he cuts right to the chase. Poppy knows how he is; there’s no need to dance around the topic. “I need you here for….reasons.” Smooth, O’Shea. “If you could live here, that’ll make it even easier.”

as much as poppy appreciates the job she has in the hotel, there’s a small part of her that resents the power richie has over her. it’s challenging to want to flip off the guy who dumped you when you have to see him at your 9-5 the next day. her ex-boyfriend being her boss made for a terribly written soap opera (one she signed up for), but at least she felt comfortable in his presence. more comfortable than she had realized, because when talks of transfers had come up in conversations with other employees, poppy found herself slightly on edge.
she hadn’t been aware of the way her leg was bouncing anxiously as she sat in his office until he spoke up, her fingers nervously fiddling with a loose string on the hem of her dress. as blue eyes fixate on to richie, an attempt to read him, she had a strong fear that his next utterance would be telling her to pack up as there would be no use for her in north coast either. poppy laughs out a sigh when the opposite is spoken. “ oh my gosh, thank goodness. ”
there was no time to gush over his words, his admission to needing her there would have made her blush had she not realized his latter suggestion. “ you want me to live here? ” her face twisting in both thought and confusion. to be honest, there was no one else in chicago poppy trusted to make her feel safe. she surpassed the need for her father to do so. and as she feels she has practically watched richie mature right in front of her, she finds herself hoping it won’t be long until she does the same: maybe this is a start. “ why? are you sure? i’m not saying no but i want to make sure this a decision you’re truly set on. i’m fine at home, and i’ve been apartment touring anyway. i don’t want you to feel that i’m like desperate for a place to stay. ”
