The spectrum

So I thought I was going to talk a little about what I'm doing here in the mix of the song I previously talked about. The one where I used all the toys for making all these new squeaky clicky sounds. Initially there were some problems with one toy that had a very irritating mid-high frequency that I just had to remove. So I use my equaliser to try the find the right frequency band, to remove it. Turns out was around 3kHz which is where human hearing is more sensitive than other frequencies. At the same time, we do not hear as well in the lower parts of the spectrum.Anyways, think I need to order food. I’m so hungry.

Music’s frequency

It's important to talk about frequencies and how they work, since that is what we are listening to. It can seem boring and so on, but once you start to know how they work, an equaliser can be your best friend. Until next time, Bye!

Horsepower

We can't hear att all under 20 Hz, this just becomes a kind of force to us. A rumble that we can feel, and not hear. The human hearing goes from 20Hz to 20000hz, but most of us can only hear up to 16-17kHz. It is said that only newborns or really young kids can pick up on these super high frequencies. Thats why we try to roll of many low frequencies for example, since they only take up space in the mix. At the same time, we add a little to the top spectrum, just because we “feel” that there is some kind of shimery feel to instrument we add it to.

Recording toys!

I'm currently working on a track just for my own portfolio I guess you could say. Here I use toys that I found at a local flea market where they cost like 1$ each. What's great about these is that they easch make very individual sounds.

Stereo

It's recording in XY-stereo and it sounds great when I'm using 96kHz samplerate. The files can get quite large, but I'ts really not a problem these days since my computer is a beast! I record in such high samplerate, due to the possibilites of modulation. It's much easier to twist a sound around of you have more information stored in the soundfile. That's a little sound-theory for you! Not the most interesting I guess, but it's good to know the limits of sounds when you want to design new sounds from the ones you recorded yourself. Recording System

They make beeping, clicking and latching sounds. All which are great for producing minor elements in the song to make it feel more alive. I like to twist them around and putting effects like reverb, delay and other kinds and modulation to separate them from one another. It'sat the same time very important not use too many, since it can drown all the other musical elements that I'm putting in. All these sounds I recorded with my own handheld device.

Loungey kind of jazz

I also did a jazzscore for the same company. This was supposed to be loungey kind of jazz, so it's give thats smooth and calm kind feeling. I guess it's supposed to be like the music in a reallife casino, it feels like they have that on all the major places. So I've taken the fundamental parts and put it in to the ensemble, like drums, bass, saxofon, paino and guitar. Most of the things I've used are samples, but I recorded the guitar and piano myself. Casinomusic

I've been recently doing some tracks for a casino, Mrbet.com. They're an onlone casino, and they needed tracks for some of their new games. It's really exciting since I havent done this type of music before.

Viola

It's different genres depending on the game aswell. There's one game where I have been working in kind of a fantasy world and it needs an orchestration with all the elements from classic fantasy. So I choose to go for small scale violins, cello and pizzicatto violas. These are then balanced well depending on what stage the game is in. If you're winning more it scales up with more instrument like trombone, horns and stagedrums. The other important thing is that is really easy to loop the track. Since we don't want take up too much memory, we try to tie the ends together on every track sto make it seamless for the player.

Radio playing

I've previously worked in radio and radiotheatre. Mostly designing elements for what the radioplay need, but also helping out with the script and adding ideas so that I feel that the sound really connects to what is told in the play. We were 5 people working with these plays. We had voiceactors, scriptwriters and sound engineers, and everyone knew a little about everything, except all had a specialty. It was a great workflow and our products were appreciated. We were always happy with the result, but always aiming higher for the next project. Anyway, I'm going more into the process om my current work in my next entry. Bye!

I love drums

I often use samples for drums, since they are often the only element that is organic. I'm not going to post my music just yet, this is going to be more on how I approach musicproduction and the process from idea to master.

How's it going folks? My name is Rick and I'm freelancing musician, working mostly with my own projects. I do productionmixes with beat-oriented triphop. In plain English, it's more of a genre where I design the sounds mostly from scratch, using software plugins and my knowledge.
