"The abuses are piling up" at "Alligator Alcatraz," said Adrian Carras-quillo, and the mistreatment of migrants is intentional. When Florida and the Trump administration opened the Everglades detention center last year, "its harsh location and cavalier nickname" generated both sarcastic laughter and outrage. Most Americans quickly moved on, but "Alligator Alcatraz" remains "a key site for Trump's mass deportation regime." Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) gained entry and saw 1,500 detainees living in cramped, reeking cages, some configured so that people must use the toilet in front of everyone. When a federal judge last month ruled detainees were entitled to make outgoing legal calls, guards cut off phones and started beating up migrants who complained—causing a broken wrist, shoulder and arm injuries, and a black eye. As punishment, detainees are locked in "the box" in direct sunlight, exposed to swarms of mosquitoes and extreme heat for hours without water. The camp, said Wasserman Schultz, is a "monument to cruelty." The Trump administration wants conditions in its detention camps to be so unbearable that other immigrants self-deport out of fear of winding up like animals in cages. Yes, the cruelty is the point.
