why is being kind and having an optimistic out-view on life associated with naivety? Why is being an adult having to be hard and serious? A life spent being serious and having contempt for the world around you is a life lived in misery. Folks, there’s nothing left from the Linguistics division. We lost all the indigenous languages collection: the recordings since 1958, the chants in all the languages for which there are no native speakers alive anymore, the Curt Niemuendaju archives: papers, photos, negatives, the original ethnic-historic-linguistic map localizing all the ethnic groups in Brazil, the only record that we had from 1945. The ethnological and archeological references of all ethnic groups in Brazil since the 16th century… An irreparable loss of our historic memory. It just hurts so much to see all in ashes.

I don’t think enough people really understand yet exactly how horrific this fire was. This was a loss to our world and species.

This is the kind of fire we think of thousands of years later as the deepest of tragedy. On the scale of the Library of Alexandria. It’s worse than that really. The Library of Alexandria kept copies of books in other locations so historically very little was lost in individual fires over the centuries.

This? We lost so goddamn much in one night.

Something I find so important but haven’t talked about before is progress. Progress can be something hard to measure when you’re living moment by moment, unable to remember a time when what you’re struggling with right now was even harder when you started. It’s so extremely difficult to congratulate ourselves for small levels of progress when each moment we’re comparing ourselves to our end goal, the people we see online, what our peers are able to do and we’re striving for. But as we come to the end of the year, let’s just step back for a moment and remind ourselves how far we’ve come from being the people we were at this time last year. Remind yourself that though you might not be where you want to be yet, you’ve made progress and taken steps and that’s just as important.

Take this time to congratulate yourself for progress, no matter how small and remind yourself that though you might not be there yet, you’ve come a long way from where you started.
