The first thing y/n learned about Task Force 141 was that they were nothing like the stories.
The second thing y/n learned was that Lieutenant Simon Riley was exactly like the stories.
Silent, Intimidating, Impossible to read. And apparently incapable of looking at you without immediately looking away. You had been with the 141 for three months.
Three months of proving yourself. Three months of being tested, pushed to the limits, and exhausted beyond belief. You’d survived all of it. You’d also survived Lieutenant Riley. Mostly
“You’re late”
You stopped halfway through the briefing room doorway. Simon was standing beside the table, arm crossed over his chest, balaclava covering his face. You glanced at the clock.
“By thirty seconds”
“Thirty seconds is late”
You raised an eyebrow and let out a tiny scoff.
“Good morning to you too, Lieutenant”
His eyes narrowed. For a moment, neither of you moved. Then Johnny’s voice came from behind you.
“She’s got you there, LT” he laughed
Simon looked at him. Johhny immediately raised his hands and backed up a few steps, the cocky smile still present.
“Didn’t say anything”
“You did”
“Must be hearing the voices again, LT”
You bit back a laugh and walk towards the table. Price was already sitting at the head, flipping through a folder.
“Take a seat”
You did. Simon remained standing as always. At first, you’d assumed it was because he preferred having his back against a wall, always having an eye on a exit. But after three months, you’d started noticing something else. He always stood somewhere where he could keep an eye on you. During briefings. During meals. During training. During downtime.
You’d notice because you were starting to do the same thing. Not intentionally. You just … noticed him. A lot.
“Lieutenant Riley”
Price’s voice snapped you back. Simon looked away from you toward him.
“You’re paired with y/n for today’s exercise”
The room went quiet. Simon’s eyes flicked toward you. You smiled
“Excited” you teased
“No” is his blunt response back but you see a glimmer of something you didn’t recognize flash in his eyes
You laughed. Johnny made a strange choking sound beside Gaz who was also trying to hide a smile. Simon glared at them both.
“What?”
“Nothing”
“You’ve got something to say”
“Nope”
“Good”
Johnny leaned toward you, grinning like a fool.
“He’s excited”
“I heard that” you say back with a teasing smile on your face and a playful glint in your eyes.
Price sighed. “Can we get through one briefing without you two behaving like children?”
“Sorry, sir” Johnny said trying to stop his laughter.
Simon didn’t answer. He was staring at you. Not glaring. Just staring.
You tilted your head, the grin fading into something softer.
“What?”
His eyes immediately shifted away. “Nothing”
You smiled. Interesting
The training exercise was supposed to be simple. Clear the building, extract the target, get out. You hadn’t anticipated getting a scolding from your Lieutenant hallway through the exercise.
It had happened so fast you didn’t realize till it was over. You had moved smoothly through the house, sweeping every room. Simon at your back the whole time. When you turned, he did. He didn’t speak much, he anticipated your movements, covered your blind spots, matched your pace. When you stopped, he did. When you moved, he did.
It should have been comforting. Instead, it was distracting.  So when you reached the final room you didn’t notice the enemy creeping up. You raised your weapon. Simon grabbed your tactical vest and pulled your back to his chest. A simulated round hit the wall right where your head had been. Your eyes flicked between Simon and the marker.
“Careless” he whispered under his breath
“I didn’t see it” you whisper back
“That’s the problem” he bites out
You frowned. “I thought you said I was improving at this”
“You are” he says
“Then why-”
“You still need to watch your six, I won’t always be there to do it for you. And one day that bullet kills you because you go to comfortable with trusting someone else to keep you safe” he snaps at you
You look down ashamed and notice his arm is still holding you to his chest. He noticed as well and immediately let go. You both stood there awkwardly for a bit till the radio crackled to life with johnny’s voice.
“You guys alright in there”
“Fine” Simon responds back
After training, you and Gaz were in the common room trying to untangle the mess you made of your bootlaces.
“You know he’s got a thing for you, right?” Gaz says with a smile creeping up on his face
You looked up confused. “What?”
“Ghost” Gaz answers completely serious. You just laughed and looked away
“No” “Yes” “No” “Definitely”
You shook your head, brows furrowed. Gaz just smiles and continues speaking.
“You haven’t noticed?” “Noticed what?” “Everything” “What are you talking about?”
He started listing stuff and counting them on his fingers. “He always knows where you are”
“That’s his job” “He remembers how you take your coffee” “That’s because we all eat breakfast together, he probably knows everyone’s” you say trying to deflect.
“He threatened MacTavish when he stole your last protein bar last week” “He only did that because Johnny needs to stop stealing food” “Your food” you go silent and look down and your knotted boot laces.
Gaz stared at you for a long moment before speaking again. “He gave you his jacket the other night at the pub” “It was cold and he wasn’t wearing it” “He told soap he was cold” “He did? Why would he give me his jacket if he was cold” you ask bewildered.
“Because he has the hots for you” Gaz says as if it obvious. “Maybe he just wasn’t cold” “He was shivering y/n, and he still gave his jacket because you were cold”
You laugh, but it’s forced. In the back of your mind, you start thinking about everything.
“You’ll see” he says as he goes back to the bootlaces
You did not see. Or at least, you refused to. The next morning you walked into the common room to find Simon alone at the table drinking tea. His mask was off. You stopped in your tracks to stunned to even breathe. You had only seen his face a few times, usually on a mission when he still had his eye black on and mostly when it was dark.
He looked up. “Morning” he says quietly
“Morning” you say carefully. He stood and went to the kettle on the stove. “Coffee?” he asks as he reaches for you favorite mug. “Please” you answer as you walk closer.
He puts the mug on the counter and adds your coffee and sugar for you before adding the water.
“You put sugar in” “You take two, right?” you just stared at him. He stared back, then he reached for the milk and added that as well before sliding the mug towards you.
“You remembered” “Course I did” and something about the way he said it made your stomach flutter.
You took the mug and sat down across from where he was sitting. “Thank you”
He just nodded. Silence settled in the room. Not the uncomfortable kind, not exactly. He looked at you; you looked back. His eyes lingered on you, just for a second. Then he looked down at his tea. You smiled to yourself, maybe Gaz was onto something.
After that it became impossible to ignore. Simon stayed subtle. Painfully so. Which meant he wasn’t subtle at all. Wherever you were he’d just appear. In the gym. The armory. Even just sitting outside after training, somehow, he would end up right beside you.
“Are you stalking me?” you ask him one day in the gym.
“No” “You seem to be everywhere I am” you say narrowing your eyes at him
“Coincidence” you keep looking at him, he looks away.
During one training session you were struggling with a particular move. Simon was watching from the sidelines. “You’ve got it all wrong” he says walking closer.
“Show me?” you asked as he cam closer. He positioned himself behind you and carefully guided your arms. His hand briefly touched yours, both of you froze. He shows you the movement quickly and pulls away, walking back to the sideline.
Johnny appeared beside you grinning from ear to ear. “What” “Nothing” “Johnny” “He’s got it bad” he says as he laughs a bit.
You just shove him off to the side and go back to training.
The first time Simon got jealous, you didn’t notice but everyone else did. You were in the mess hall, talking to one of the newer recruits from another unit. He was funny, you laughed at a few of his jokes.
That’s when Simon walked in, his eyes immediately found you like how they always did, then flick between you and the guy beside you. His eyes narrowed when he saw the way you leaned toward the other man while laughing at something he said. His jaw tightened. Gaz noticed. Price noticed. Soap noticed. And then Simon was moving fast.
You look up at the sound of his voice and smile at him. He doesn’t reciprocate
“Yeah?” “Price wants to speak to you” “He does?” “Yes”
You look at him confused by his behavior, then you look across the mess hall to where Price is sitting. Price raised an eyebrow; he looked between you and Simon before raising his hands in surrender. You get up, excusing yourself from the conversation before heading over to Price.
Soap head over to Simon as he follows you. “You know she was just having a conversation, right?” soap says as he keeps an eye on Ghost.
“I know” “You looked like you were about to rip his head off”
Simon stays quiet and sits down at the table next to price and across from you. Gaz and Soap share a look before going back to their meals.
Later that week you find Simon outside. He was sitting on the steps with his elbows resting on his knees.
“Mind if I sit?” he moved slightly to the side making space for you to sit. You sit beside him and for a while none of your spoke.
“You’re weird” you say suddenly. “Cheers” he says and you can see the corner of his lips lifting. You laughed.
“No, I mean…” you hesitated before speaking softer. “You’re different around me”
His eyes narrowed and he turned slightly to look at you. “How” “I don’t know. You remember everything I say, you always know where I am, you gave me your jacket even when you were shivering, and you’re always looking at me.” You ramble out and avoid eye contact with him.
He looked at you. “I don’t” “Yes, you do” “No” “Simon” “Y/N”
“You were staring at me during breakfast this morning.
“I wasn’t” he denies looking at his feet. “You absolutely were”
He sighed. “Ok maybe I was staring a little bit” At his answer you smile.
“Why?” you ask softly. He doesn’t answer. Your smile falters.
“Did I do something wrong?” you ask
“No” he answers immediately. “Do you not like me?” his head snapped up towards you so fast you thought he got whiplash. “No” he answers quickly and then seems to realize what he said. “I mean… what I meant to say… shit” he mumbles out and you feel your heart drop a bit.
He rubbed a hand over the back of his neck “I like you” he blurts out.
Your heart skips a few beats “You like me?” you ask unsure.
“Yeah” he says and it almost sounds like he’s annoyed by that fact.
You smile. “Like me how?” you ask teasingly. For once he held you gaze and didn’t look away. “You really want me to answer that?” “Yes” he exhaled slowly.
“You’re a pain in my ass” “That’s not an answer” “You talk too much”
“Simon” “You distract me. I notice when you leave the room. I notice when you’re tired. I know when you’ve skipped breakfast. I know when you’re nervous. And I know when you’re pretending you’re not scared”
You’ve stopped breathing at this point, and your heart feels like it’s about to jump out of your chest.
“I like you” he says quietly now.
There it was, simple, honest, terrifying. You smiled. “I like you too”
Simon froze. “You do?” “Yes” he stared at you like you’d just told him the sky was red.
“You don’t have to look so shocked,” you say laughing softly. “Why?” “Because you’re brilliant”
You smiled. “So, what happens now?” he looked at you. “I don’t know” “That’s unusual” “Very”
You both laughed softly and leaned into each other. His eyes softened and he reached for your hand. His fingers slipped between yours. You lean your head against his shoulder; he stilled completely and slowly he relaxed. His thumb brushed over the back of your hand.
Neither of you say anything, for once the silence felt like enough.
The next morning when you walked into the briefing room Johhny looked up, then looked between you and Simon and grinned. Simon glared at him and that just made Johnny’s grin grow wider.
“Morning lovebirds” he says in a sing song voice. You laugh. Simon sighs.
Price pinched the bridge of his nose. “MacTavish” “Yes sir” “One more word” price warns.
Johhny shuts his mouth. Gaz lets out a snicker.
Simon reaches to hold your hand under the table without even realizing it. Too late, Soap is whooping, Gaz is whistling and Price has a small smile on his face.
“Riley” “Yes sir” “If you are going to court one of my recruits, at least try to keep it professional”
Simon nodded but didn’t let go of your hand.
Everyone faced forward to price so that the meeting could begin. A few minutes later you feel a squeeze on your hand and look over to see Simon smiling at you. Small, almost invisible, but you saw it. And smiled back.
