Back in Alstone.
Iām so lazy to unpack though.
Where did you go? I think I've been a little out of the loop during the holiday season...
The Christmas Promise || Col & Pearce
Col had debated long and hard about whether or not they were both ready for this next step, one they had taken before with dire consequences that nearly drove them apart, but after all that had happened to both of them between then and now Col couldnāt imagine a better time. They had practically moved in with one another already, neither of them wanting to sleep in an empty bed and always finding comfort in the arms of the other, but this just seemed more permanent and like a promise for all that was to come in the future. It seemed completely inadequate compared to what Pearce had given her, a beautiful ring that she couldnāt help but look down at during the times when she thought he wasnāt looking, and Col knew that this day would go down as the best one she had been given in a long time; all because of the man that made her a promise she never thought could ever be a reality. It was in that moment that she realized it was his love that made it all possible, made it so that Col could open up her heart to the possibility of something grander than she was, and there were no words she could begin to spill to echo her thanks; just a bunch of boxes that they both grinned at like fools. āI woke up early a few mornings,ā Col replied with a shrug as she idly kicked a box with the toe of her boot, bending down to flip through the contents quickly before folding the flaps closed and looking over her shoulder at him.
āOther times I told you that I needed to get something and quickly filled a box or two. I wanted to have most of it ready when I told you because I knew that you couldnāt wait,ā she replied with a soft chuckle as she watched him start to collect boxes in a stack. āClearly I know you better than anyone because I was right,ā she replied as she started to push boxes closer to the door in an effort to minimize time, her brows arching at his words before she stood up and brushed her hands along the side of her jeans. āAre you saying that Iām not worth the wait?ā she teased lightly with her hands pressed against the small of her hips as she put on a fake expression of insult. āI wish I could do the dramatic take of the ring and throw it to the ground right about now but I love it too much,ā Col continued as she bent down to gather up a box in her arms just as he did.
Grumbling at his words she waited for him to leave before picking up a heavy box of her own, a struggled groan leaving her lips as she balanced it against the her hips before trying to peer over top of the lid as she kicked at her door and precariously made her way down the few steps from her threshold. When Col started to slip and slide against the ice she carefully place the box on the ground, her hand moving to brush aside the hair that curtained over her eyes before she bent down and started to push the box along the sidewalk with small huffs and bouts of energy; Pearce was never going to let her live this down.
Pearce was still struggling with the reality of the situation: Col was moving in with him. Theyād lived together before in various forms ā Preston was close, travelling together and living in hotels rooms was closer, but New York was the closest theyād actually been to ālivingā together. Pearce frowned as he carried the heavy box, thinking about NY and all that happened there ā it hadnāt been living, he realised. Living meant being happy and doing things you enjoyed; it meant laughing and having fun and not spiralling down in self-destructive behaviour. He almost dropped the box he was carrying as he thought back to those months in the city and wondered if their next attempt at living together would end up the same ā they were currently in a good place, but they had been when theyād stayed in NY, too. Pearce didnāt want to believe that theyād make the same mistake twice, but he also had to admit that they were both deeply flawed people of a degree that meant mistakes were guaranteed. The possibility that a second time might destroy them weighed on his mind, and his shoes skidded on the ice as he lost concentration on the situation at hand.
Ascending the stairs to his house over the bookshop, Pearce glanced around his apartment with nervousness ā what if he was destined to live here alone once he and Col were over? He placed the box on the ground hastily and tried to take some deep breaths as nausea rolled through his stomach, something that had been happening more often since heād been off his meds. But it was momentary, and Pearce tried to think about how they wouldnāt end up like that ā not this time. Things were looking better and better, and their time spent living apart had done them both a world of good. Pearce knew that he was overreacting and jumping to the worst possible conclusions, but that had always been his default action. He stared down at Colās box of belongings before nodding to himself in conclusion ā he was fine. They were fine. It was Christmas, after all, and Pearce knew he had to make the most of it. He turned and walked back out of his apartment, taking the steps two at a time and sliding out the door to see Col pushing a box along the sidewalk, her hair falling into her eyes and a frown of concentration or annoyance on her face. Pearce laughed and stood on his stood with his arms crossed his chest, watching her in amusement.
āEverything alright, baby?ā he asked, eyebrows raised as he watched her huffing as the box stuck to the ice and jolted along unevenly. It was a truly pathetic sight, but Pearce had told her not to grab one of the heavy ones; she was impossible to give orders to unless their clothes were off. Pearce laughed again and stepped down to help her, even though she would most likely insist that she could do it. āYou know, thereās a reason why I asked you not to get the heavy ones,ā said Pearce casually, stopping in front of her and looking down at her with a wry smile. āItās a biological fact that men are stronger than women, and therefore, the men should carry the heavy things. I admire the fact that you attempted it and got this far, but you should head back and grab a box thatās a little lessā¦ā Pearce bent down and picked up the box before almost stumbling under its weight. āJesus,ā he moaned, wrapping his arms around it better. āYeah-, go and grab another box about five times less heavy. Iāve got this one.ā Pearce wasnāt sure if he did actually have it, but he wasnāt about to let on that he didnāt to Col, so he smiled at her over the top of the box. āIf you grab another heavy box,ā he said in a mock-serious tone, the smile falling away, āthere will be trouble, and not the kind that youāll like.ā
The Christmas Promise || Col & Pearce
Col knew that the moment she told Pearce her plan there would be no stopping the boundless energy that would quickly seep into his body, and even if they were having a perfectly comfortable Christmas in bed Col knew better than to deny him this simple request. She had been packing for days in secret, quietly telling Pearce that she had an assignment or that her house needed to be cleaned considering she had been spending all of her free time with Pearce since the event, but she made sure that most of her possessions were packed so that she could continued to stay without going back as often.
She knew it to be a large leap in a fairlyĀ ambiguousĀ direction, the kind of road that they had been down before which had resulted in them nearly going back to the one place they promised each other they would never return, and Col would have been lying if she said she wasnāt the least bit hesitant. The one thing that shed away all her fears and doubts was her love for Pearce, and the new material object that gave penchant to that love that was resting on her finger now; she knew he was well worth the risk when the reward was so much sweeter. They were in a better place now, more at terms with what they knew now to be lifelong disorders, but her violent tendencies and his depression didnāt seem so daunting with the otherās support; if anything it made Col love him all that much more to make up for the love that he had lacked in the past.
Following behind him with a small laugh they exited his warm and comfortable home and into the blistering winter winds, the cold immediately flushing his cheeks andĀ highlightingĀ the bright smile that seemed to be carved into his face since the present. Col had never once thought she could ever make someone smile like that, completely written off the idea that someone could learn to love her at the same time she learned to love them, but she wouldnāt have had it any other way or with any other person besides the man that looked at her as if she was the only thing in the world that he truly needed; aside from chicken nuggets and a good book but that was neither here nor there.Ā
Furrowing her brows as he spoke her steps quickly picked up as they reached her own home, the promise of a warm dwelling andĀ extremitiesĀ with blood flow being a silent promise as she listened to him speak with an ever growing smile. When he faltered Col just shook her head, her grin still in tact as they opened the door to her cottage so that he could see just how much packing she had done in preparation for the present. Closing the door behind them she breezed past him at a lingering pace, her body brushing against his lightly before she stopped in front of him and reached up onto her toes to gift him a small kiss. Smiling against his lips Col stayed where she was, soaking in the warmth of his body and the sparks that still flew between every kiss, before falling back onto her heels with a small laugh. āI hope the after was that you were gonna make an honest woman out of me, babe,ā she said with raised brows before she walked deeper into the house to close up a box in the middle of what used to be the kitchen.
Even though Pearce was an adult and more than familiar with the excitement that came from Christmas day, heād never had one quite so happy as the one that he was currently experiencing. Entering Colās apartment was now a different experience to every other time heād been in there, - now it didnāt feel like hers; it was now simply a place that held her belongings. Somehow, between the moment Col had told him she was moving in and when heād entered her house, Pearce had already transferred her presence and equated it with his house as her home. Then again, Pearce had always felt that they shared some kind of home as long as they were together, and not necessarily physically. The sight of Colās possessions packed away, ready to be shifted to his apartment made him beyond happy, and he was reminded just how much she gave to him. Anything he asked for, she gave him; whatever he wanted, she somehow knew without him having to speak ā and this was just one example in a line of many. āHow did you get time to do all this?ā he asked in amazement, looking at the boxes and wondering how sheād managed to sneak away from him for so long without him even noticing.
He had been staring at the boxes when Col leaned against him and brought her lips to his own, almost melting against his body as she lingered there. Pearce responded the only way he knew how and held her ever closer, relishing in the small kiss before she dropped back down to her normal height, but Pearce still kept his arms around her, wanting to hold her longer. Her words caught him off guard, but not unpleasantly, and before he could respond coherently she was walking away with a smile on her face, disappearing into the depths of her apartment, leaving Pearce with a hammering heart. All his life, all heād ever wanted was someone to love him, to care about him, and to understand him ā and with Col he got all of those things and so much more. It hadnāt occurred to him until the last few years that marriage was something that he would actually see in his life; he had never felt constructed for anything of that nature, and judging from the kind of person Col had once been, heād assumed that neither did she. But now, things were picking up speed faster than he ever would have guessed, and he didnāt want it to stop.
Pearce followed after Col, his voice echoing down the hall. āHow do I know you wonāt make me wait another few years after that plan is proposed?ā he joked, shoving his hands into his pockets as he wandered into the kitchen, tapping his foot against a box as she closed one up. āIt seems like your style,ā he said before laughing, feeling elated. Pearce knew in his heart of hearts that even if he did propose and Col wanted to wait two years or fifty years til they actually married, then that was fine with him. He would always wait for Col ā it was never a question. Pearce knew that she was his beginning and end, and everything else between was just part of the ride. Bending over, Pearce picked up one box and placed it on top of another before lifting both. They were heavy, but not too heavy, and his long arms wrapped around them easily. He turned on the spot, placing his chin on the top box and looking over them at Col. āAlright, Iām gonna start taking some of these across, baby,ā he said, juggling them on his knee to readjust his grip. āDonāt get any of the heavy ones, okay? Leave them for me,ā he ordered before flashing her a happy grin and backing up out of the kitchen and down the hall, opening the door with his foot and hurrying back across the snow with Colās belongings in his arms.
Drabble #2
It happens when Col is out to get something from the store. Pearce, lying in bed and thinking about how excited he is for Col to now live with him, is suddenly torn from his thoughts by a bout of nausea. Itās the kind that twists his stomach; itās like something is crawling inside of him, burning his stomach, and then without thinking twice heās running for the bathroom. He isnāt sure how long he spends hunched over the toilet bringing up his lunch, but when heās finished, he collapses against the cool tile on the wall, feeling cold and clammy. His vision swims, and when he opens his eyes, itās almost only whiteness he sees. Pearce breathes deeply, thinking only about the air flowing in and out of his lungs until his pulse and returned to a normal rate and he can think again.
He sits on the floor a little longer, unsure of his legs. When he does stand, he feels weak but in general, everything is okay. Standing in front of the basin, Pearce splashed some water on his face and feeling marginally better still. His mind was racing ahead and trying to rationalise the bout of sickness ā stomach bug? Bad food? ā but his heart knew that it was because of the lack of meds. Heād been noticing in small increments that he was slipping in some areas. Colās absence for long periods of time filled him with anxiety to the point where he could do little but sit with his knees to his chest and wait for her to return. Granted, that had only happened twice, but it was still unprecedented. His moods had been generally stable, which was a blessing because then Col would definitely know something was wrong. But there was something inside of him ā like an itch or a twist or something flipped ā that made everything just⦠uncomfortable. The fact that heād been on meds for nearly four years might have something to do with it, and the nausea was a sign that everything probably wasnāt alright.
But Pearce put on a bright smile when Col returned, glad to have brushed his teeth when she gave him a quick kiss that made his cold skin flush with life at her touch. Pearce knew he shouldnāt keep anything from her ā and he wouldnāt; he vowed to tell her the moment he knew for certain that anything was actually wrong. Until then, heād deal with the nausea in silence until he couldnāt any longer, because Col had finally moved in, and Pearce wasnāt about to ruin that for anything.
The Christmas Promise || Col & Pearce
When realization started to dawn on his face Col fought hard to stop the urge to the laugh, the slow rise of feeling and understanding giving a physical representation of what coming home had to look like if it were to be displayed on someoneās skin. But above all Col prevailed, and her expression remained mute as she sat across from him, her fingers still tracing lovingly over his face before she silently nodded along to his question. āYes. Moving in here. That is if youāll have me,ā Col asked with a meager smile, her face quirking expectantly as if the proposition really needed to be considered. Her question was all but answered with Pearce quickly collapsed over top of her, knocking all air of her lungs in the process as he pressed her into the bed with a kiss that consumed the world around them.
It was frenzied and excited, everything that they felt through the day being transmitted through their lips, and Col met the gesture with earnest as her fingers rapidly flew to his hair to devour him in their kiss. Everything that holiday had been perfect, from the ring to Pearceās reaction, and Col couldnāt possibly manage to transmit her elation into words and simply continued kissing him like he was the air that had been previous denied to her. When he broke away Col nearly gasped for air, her fingers still tangled in his hair and she looked up at him with a smile that fully gleamed behind her eyes. āOf course Iām serious, babe. Although Iām known to joke I donāt think this is something that you would find funny,ā she replied with a small laugh as he still tried to verbally understand the gift that she had given him.
āHey!ā she said with a small smack across his chest. āThe wait made you appreciate the gift all that much more, right? Better late than never. I just thought that, after everything that happened, that I donāt want to wake up without you next to me anymore,ā Col continued as she sat up from the bed with a laugh flowing from her lips. āNow? Well, if you want to. There are already some stuff in boxes but itās so cold outside, babe? Canāt it wait?ā Col asked, even though she was already sliding off the bed and walking towards her clothes to change from one of his old shirts; there was no denying him when Pearce Williams was on a mission.
Pearce felt as though his body was thrumming with energy and excitement at the thought of Col finally moving in; it was the perfect gift, and one that Col had known heād wanted for a long time. Their living separately had always been hard for them, but something theyād had to do; they needed their own space after what happened in New York, and even though they barely slept a night apart, their own homes were still a necessary part of finding their feet again. It had been a year since New York and the disastrous and self-destructive behavioural patterns there, and the gift of Col moving in was unexpected but welcome. Pearceās mind flashed to all the things that would come from their living together ā but above all, it was that their lives together would finally be moving forward. He wanted everything with Col; everything cheesy and normal and lame that sheād probably shy away from ā but he wanted it, and heād wait a million years if thatās what it took. Living together was just the first step, and it made him ecstatic that Col was finally there. āI never want to wake up without you there,ā he said, smiling down at her as she slapped his chest, ābut Iām glad my patience has paid off.ā
He rolled off Col and almost bounded of bed, grabbing shoes and jackets and scarves, as the weather outside looked blisteringly cold. When Col said as much, he laughed and shook his head, winding a scarf around his neck, though it still hung down to his knees. āIt could wait, but I donāt want to ā why delay it any longer?ā he said, watching as she changed into some of her own clothes. Pearce frowned down at his pyjama pants and sighed, pulling them off and finding some jeans, deciding that if he was going to dress then heād best do it properly. The air was cold as it hit the skin of his chest as he pulled on a fresh t-shirt, and he quickly layered up again, catching a glimpse of Col out the corner of his eye as she pulled on a tank top and her favourite grey cardigan. The scarf was wrapped on once more, as well as a jacket, and then he was ready, wanting to launch himself outside and grab the boxes that would officially mark Colās position in his house ā their house.
āLetās go!ā he said excitedly, unable to wipe the smile from his face as he took Colās hand and led her through his house, out the front door and to her own, almost cursing as the winter winds hit his face and made his skin turn numb. He looked at Col as they walked, and he studied the way her cheeks were flushed pink from the cold and her skin became paler ā making her eyes and hair seem darker ā and he thought, not for the first time, about how lucky he was. āNow that youāre moving in, you do realise you have started a domino effect,ā he said casually, never taking his eyes off her as they shuffled along the small gap between their houses. āFirst the moving in, then we get a joint pet ā Lucy doesnāt count ā and thenā¦ā Pearce trailed off, feeling nervous and unsure and looking at Col to see how sheād take all of this talk ā it was almost like verbalĀ diarrheaĀ He couldnāt stop it now that it had started, but he would if it made Col uncomfortable. They reached her front door, and Pearce waited for her to open it before they entered, and he saw several boxes sitting in the hallway, their contents packed hastily, and he smiled at the thought of unpacking all of her things and mixing them with his own.
Drabble #1 - Pearl
To Pearce, Col is the like the centre of every exploding firework ā she is every random burst of colour and light, banging and popping in the darkness, fizzing with energy and potential. She is the sense of awe and wonder and magic that comes from watching fireworks explode, right down to the lingering smoke that hangs in the sky when the colours fade away. She is unique every time; she is overwhelming and brilliant, and Pearce loves her long after the smoke has dispersed and the sky is still once more.
I think I'm sort of late to this but anyways...
You both got me a gift? Wow. Uhm, well, whenever youāre free we can exchange.
Col and I got you a joint gift; we figured it was best that way. I hope you'll like it - Col picked it out, so you're guaranteed something awesome. We should do something soon - lunch or a movie?
I think I'm sort of late to this but anyways...
Oh, good, good. Iām glad. Uh⦠mine was⦠okay? I didnāt do much. Just watched TV and allowed myself to eat junk food.
That's still a perfectly good Christmas in my opinion? I mean... all my Christmases before Preston were like that - it's really just another day in the year, just with gifts. Which reminds me that Col and I got you a gift which we need to give you soon!
The Christmas Promise || Col & Pearce
Barely keeping her glee contained Col all but jumped on the bed, the small movement making Pearce look over his shoulder at her with a quirked grin as he pulled the box towards him and started to unwrap the paper. It was a box that had seen more moves than one bit of cardboard should have, the corners all my crushed with discoloured spots from the elements and time riddling the outside but still Pearceās smile stayed strong. She almost had to laugh at the fact that he was trying to maintain his good mood, the appearance of the box only causing his face to flicker in confusion before he opened it and peered inside. Leaning over to look along with him she noticed the small trinkets randomly thrown into the box, filled with some things she hadnāt yet unpacked after the years and some things from her room that she had thrown in there for good measure aimlessly piled on top of one another.
Looking up at him as he picked at the items Colās face cracked into a smile, her head shaking lightly as she combed her fingers through her hair slowly before reaching into the box to pick up the figurine that he had mentioned. āGood job, babe. Cyclops or Scott Summers. Still an asshat,ā she said with a small laugh as she threw it carelessly back into the box with a small crash along the other items. Plucking the mug from his hands next she rolled the porcelain into her hand slowly, her fingers running over the bright red spots lazily before she threw it back into the box with an ignorant lack of care as to its fragility. With a dramatic sigh she wrapped her fingers around the box and deliberately slid it across the bed towards her, a mischievous grin reaching her lips as she closed up the box and rested her elbows on top of it. āSorry to say, babe, but none of this is yours,ā Col stated simply, the surprise burning bright behind her eyes as he looked at her in completely confusion.
Turning around on the bed till she was now facing him cross legged she reached out to cup his face in her small hands, thumbs running along his jaw line before one traveled upward to lightly brush aside the locks of hair that fell down to curtain over his eyes. āItās not like Iām just going to give away my Scott Summers action figure. I mean, sure the entire Marvel Universe hates him after what he did but those things arenāt your gift,ā Col said with a smile as her fingers smoothed away the confused creases along his forehead before roaming back down along his jaw. āThatās just one box but the rest is going to require your help, but thatās only if you have enough space here for all my stuff,ā Col finally said with a wide grin, her heart panging loudly in her chest as she looked up at him with all the love she that pulsed through her veins from the first time they had met.
The random objects that Col had gifted to him were random and without pattern, but there was still one thing tying them all together: Col. She had thought of him in each one of them, and because of that, Pearce loved the gift. It was true that sometimes her impulses still got the better of her, but Col had logic and reasoning behind her actions, even if she couldnāt verbalise them sometimes. Pearce had to believe that as he looked at his Christmas gift and then to the ring that heād given Col ā the equivalency didnāt matter to him, because he didnāt expect a gift from her. Heād wanted to give Col the ring because he loved her, and whatever she may or may not give him was of no concern. But Pearceās thoughts on gift giving were interrupted when the box was pulled from his hands and settled against Col instead. He frowned at her, and when she spoke, that only served to deepen, along with his surprise. āNot⦠mine?ā he asked, wondering if Col had realised that the objects in the box were too valuable to her to give to him, in which case he could understand, but that didnāt seem like Col.
His confusion grew as Col inched closer to him and brought her hands to his face, holding him for a moment as her fingers smoothed across his skin and along his jaw. Pearceās eyes closed for a brief moment, revelling in the touch that she gave him as he felt her hands push back his hair from his forehead (which he really needed to get cut). When Col spoke, telling him that it wasnāt his gift, Pearce felt a slight pang of disappointment ā though the objects hadnāt really been the most obvious choice for him, he had wanted to explore the boxās contents further. After all, one of his most prized possessions was a confetti globe that Col had given him, and that had been random and without thought. But Pearce continued to let Colās face smooth away his confusion and dance along his skin asĀ he listened to her speak, and her words slowly began to sink in. Her stuff. In his apartment. Her things ā her belongings ā room in his apartment. Pearce could feel his heart beat picking up as he processed it.
āYou-, you mean⦠youāre going to-, youāre reallyā¦? In here? With me? Youāre-?ā Pearce had lost the ability to speak in proper sentences as the realisation hit him with full force as he saw Colās grin widen impossibly larger before he couldnāt do anything but sweep her up in his arms and kiss her hastily. It was fast and desperate but full of his happiness as Pearce kissed Col, trying to emphasise and show her how overwhelmed he was by her gift but feeling as though heād fallen short. He ended up toppling them both back onto the bed, his body covering hers as he kissed her furiously. Once heād lost his breath, Pearce pulled back, chest heaving. āSeriously?ā he asked, disbelief colouring his feelings for a moment as he tried to quell his nerves and excitement in favour of digesting the full story. He searched her eyes and saw nothing but truth. āYouāre moving in,ā he echoed, smiling as he spoke. āAnd about bloody time, too, baby. Itās only been three years.ā But Pearce harboured nothing but love for the woman lying beneath him ā they had their reasons, yet it now seemed those were rendered null; Col was moving in, and Pearce knew that it was just another step in the right direction. āCan we go and get some of your stuff now?ā he continued, excitement gripping him. āPlease? Move in today, yeah?ā
I think I'm sort of late to this but anyways...
Merry Christmas to everyone. Hope you all had a good one.
Better late than never, I always say. Mine was excellent! How was yours? What did you do?
The Christmas Promise || Col & Pearce
Col couldnāt stop looking down at her hand for the remainder of the morning, the added weight along her fingers making her smile brightly as she nuzzled deeper into his chest with a content sigh. The gift was a surprise to say the least but not an unwelcome one; if her tears and professions of love afterward was any indication Col was more than ready for the small step forward. Truth be told she couldnāt think of a future that didnāt have him in it, the very notion that their love wasnāt everlasting making her scoff and bitter at the skeptics before she thought about how much Pearce had changed her life. He was that beacon of hope, someone that she thought of before herself, and he had managed to turn her selfish life into one that she wanted to live if only to be with him. There was no second thought needed or even cynical thoughts of the details regarding their future, because Col knew that no matter what if she had Pearce beside her everything else would simply fall into place.
Letting out a content sigh she let her lips pressed against his neck softly, her fingers drawing mindlessly patterns along her chest as she pressed her body against his tighter in a side hug she couldnāt resist giving him. The bed was warm as was his body, the blankets casually draped over them acting like a bubble from the cold and daunting weather outside of his apartment, and Col let her lids flutter to a close against the bliss that cascaded over her body. Bringing her hand up between them she admired the ring once more, her face tilting till her cheek rested against his shoulder before she smiled up at him brightly. āItās beautiful, Pearce. Iām the luckiest girl alive,ā Col stated sweetly as she moved to hover over him, her lips dancing along his teasingly before she captured his lips into a quick kiss.
Bounding out of bed she let out a small gasp when her feet hit the cold bedroom floor, her body shivering slightly as she moved to grab the grey cardigan that was so much more than a garment before looking over her shoulder with a mischievous grin. āReady for your present, babe?ā Col asked before leaving the room in an excited half-run. She felt better about the weight of her gift after being given her own, the synchronicity of what they were exchanging as presents that year making her smile as she walked toward the tree to pick up the rather large and heavy box before bringing it back to bed. Letting it thump onto the bed with a small bounce she smiled at him widely, her eyes twinkling with happiness and love as she watched the emotions that paraded over her face before she skipped back over to the bed to crawl back under the covers sitting cross-legged. āGo ahead. Open it. I hope you like it,ā Col chimed with a wink as she bent over to pull the box closer to him.
The gift wasnāt the ring, at least not to Pearce ā it was Colās acceptance of their future and the direction in which they were heading. That was all heād wanted for Christmas; to know that something solid was waiting for them on the horizon ā something good after a lifetime of so much bad. It was probably a little daunting to Col in the same way it was to Pearce if he stepped out of that moment and looked at everything at once ā but never was it too much to bear. Col was the only one he wanted, and heād known that from the moment sheād kissed him on a rooftop ā everything else was just evidence to that fact. They laid in bed for a while after heād given her the gift, partly because it was freezing out of the blankets and each otherās arms, but also because it was the perfect moment to spend the entirety of Christmas in. Colās arms wrapped around him in a hug that lingered, and Pearce also caught her eyes flickering from his face to the ring constantly, and that made him smile.
When Col tore herself from him and bounded out of bed, Pearce was a little startled but all was explained when she gave him a cheeky smile coupled with the announcement that it was time for his present. Pearce sat up in bed as she left the room, feeling his stomach tighten significantly ā he wasnāt good at receiving presents, mostly because he never knew what to expect when it came to Col.Ā She had a history of giving random and unexpected gifts, the kind that Pearce wasnāt prepared for. While most girlfriends gave clothes or cologne or books, Col went the extra mile to find the oddest and most interesting gifts heād ever received ā sometimes an odd book on a topic heād mentioned in passing once or a trinket which she said he had once wanted to see up close. When Col walked back into the room and dumped a heavy box in front of him, Pearce was sure that this year would be no different, and he smiled both nervously and happily as she pushed the box closer to him. He could see that she was excited by this gift; it was radiating off her in waves. āIām sure I will,ā he said, nodding and reaching out for the box.
Once it was in his hands, he realised the weight of it and frowned in thought at what could be hiding behind the wrapping paper. He knew that the only way to find out was to open it, so with a look to Col and back at the gift, he tore the wrapping paper from the box to uncover⦠a box. It was a regular brown cardboard box, looking a little beaten around the edges and frayed in a corner. Pearce decided not to judge the present for the container it came in, so he threw the wrapping paper away and pulled the box closer, grabbing the flaps of the lid and pushing it open. Inside were a collection of objects the likes of which Pearce had never seen out of a garage sale. It was filled with odds and ends ā a X-Men figurine, a paperback novel, a chipped mug that was decorated with red spots, as well as a piece of clothing that was clearly for a woman and other bits and pieces collected from somewhere. Pearce wasnāt sure what to say or do, so he dived into the box and pulled out the mug, turning it over in his hand and smiling up at Col. āThis⦠this is great,ā he said earnestly, looking at the chipped mug and to the other stuff in the box. āI mean, I wasnāt-.. this is perfect. I need a new mug, and Iāve always wanted my own figurine of,ā he pulled out the toy, āCyclops. Heās pretty cool. Thanks, baby,ā he said, placing the mug back in the box and leaning over to give her a kiss, happy that sheād thought of him in all of these objects and given them to him.
The Christmas Promise || Self-Para
Christmas. The one day of the year that Pearce could feel the two phases of his life competing for attention. On the one hand, he could feel the niggling beginnings of depression over the holidays, brought on by the realisation that he was another year older, that he was fortunate while others werenāt, that his family were so far away and couldnāt care less about him. But on the other, he realised how truly blessed he was ā particularly when he woke up beside Col and saw everything that was his life now embodied and reflected in that one person. It should have terrified him; it should have made him scared at being co-dependent and reliant, but instead it filled him with happiness. Col and Pearce had been through too much together for him to ever be scared of where they could head, and in that realisation was liberty. Outside, the winds were howling and it was bitterly cold, and Pearce wrapped the blanket tighter around his shoulders as he turned over and saw Col sleeping, her bare shoulders peeking out. Shuffling over across the bed, he pulled the blanket up over her skin and watching as the movement stirred her.
Pearce didnāt want to wake her, so he laid completely still for a while until she went back to sleep, her breathing deep and rhythmic and her nose twitching like it always did. Only then did he brace against the cold and leave the bed, slipping off the mattress smoothly and pulling on a sweater as he padded to the kitchen. His apartment was cast in greys and blues due to the weather, but the Christmas tree that stood tall and proud in his lounge room was a bright distraction. It acted as a shield, and as Pearce boiled the kettle and stood with his arms wrapped around his chest waiting, he studied the modest pile of gifts which had been stacked around the treeās lower branches. They didnāt have a lot of money, and the fact that they were currently renting two separate apartments was a strain on both of them, but they had pulled together a fair haul this year, and Pearce couldnāt wait to see Colās face on some of the gifts heād bought for her.
The kettle clicked off, and Pearce poured himself a cup of coffee to drink while he set about making Col breakfast. He was silent as he worked on the waffles and bacon, thinking about how little food he actually made in his lifetime ā it was always Col in the kitchen, which seemed a little unfair to him but she never complained. Pearce was a hopeless cook, heād be the first to admit it, but at least he could pull together a decent breakfast ā Col deserved that much. Pearce laid out a tray with cutlery and a plate of waffles, syrup, bacon and a cup of coffee, made strong, just the way Col liked it. The only bitter moment for the breakfast was the small pills he shook out of several bottles and placed on the plate beside her food ā meds, the kind that Col couldnāt afford to skip.
After finishing his own coffee, Pearce grabbed the tray of steaming food and walked to the bedroom, nudging open the door with his foot and seeing that Col was still sleeping. He placed the tray on a flat portion of the bed and climbed back in beside her, gently shaking her awake ā she was a fairly normal sleeper and didnāt take much to rouse.
āMerry Christmas, baby,ā he said, watching as her face slowly animated ā her eyes opened and the tentative innocence that had settled on her during the night disappeared under the weight of knowledge and information and thoughts. She was, of course, more beautiful awake than asleep, and Pearce leant forward and kissed her gently, smiling when she reciprocated. āBreakfast?ā
The tray was pulled into Colās lap as she sat up, and Pearce duly received Colās complaints that he shouldnāt have, which he suspected was code for āno, really, you shouldnāt have ā I donāt know if this is edible.ā Nonetheless, he watched on with amusement as she ate the food heād made her and sipping the hot coffee, not once flinching as it probably burnt her tongue. Pearce was lying back down in bed, feeling particularly satisfied with his work already: Col had been given the best start to her Christmas morning, and therefore nothing else could go wrong. Pearce planned to put that theory to the test.
Once Col had finished eating and the tray had been pushed and kicked to the bottom of the bed where it wouldnāt be knocked, Col settled back against Pearce in the bed, and he pulled the covers up over her so that they could both fend off the chill from outside. It was a perfect world there in his apartment and bed ā it was a microscopic snapshot of the perfect Christmas, the kind that you spend with the person you love the most in the world, and Pearce wouldnāt have traded it in for anything. But something weighed on his mind ā something that felt heavy and cumbersome, and he wanted to get it off his mind, but the thought that he might ruin the day was a strong deterrent. Under the blanket, Pearce found Colās hand and held it fast, and he knew that she was looking at him in concern, worried that something was wrong when all it was, was a matter of phrasing.
āIāve been doing a lot of thinking lately,ā he began, trying to keep his heart a regular pace as it raced beneath Colās head, which rested on his chest. āParticularly after what happenedā¦. with-, you know, before,ā he said, not wanting to bring up the unpleasant memories of the kidnapping, no matter how persistently they probably clung to Colās mind. āIt kind of put everything into perspective, you know? I suddenly realised how important some things are, and how unimportant others are, too. And⦠I donāt know, I just-, I feel like now, more than ever, we are important, you know? You and me and our life together and our future and where weāre going.ā Pearce knew he was rambling on, but he also knew that Col was always more patient with him than he deserved. He took a steadying breath and continued. āWeāve always talked around or about or hinted at- at marriage and Iām not saying I want that now, but Iām saying that I want us to do that when the time is right. I want both of us to be there and to have the means to afford it and weāre both ready, so-ā¦ā Pearce squeezed her hand once before reaching over to the bedside table. āThis is my promise to you on that ā that we will have our future together, but when weāre ready and the time is right.ā
His stomach was a jumble of nerves and butterflies and happiness as he reached down around Col and opened the box he held, revealing a ring. It wasnāt the most stunning of rings in the sense of diamonds or colour; it wasnāt boastful or flashy or pretentious. It was a ring that Pearce felt was sincere in its purpose, and it had an old-style charm about it that he liked. Silver all-over, the ring had a small diamond in the centre and shouldered by smaller clusters of diamonds on other side; it was a promise ring that Pearce felt that Col would like, because he saw Col in the ring. He pulled it from the box and, with a slightly trembling hand, placed it on Colās left hand, watching as the band slid straight on her finger. Pearce wanted to deny the rush that that small action gave him, as though he were actually proposing and that Col had just said yes ā that she would be his forever. But it was not that time, not yet, and he had to content himself with the thought heād made a promise to Col, and for the time being, it would be enough.
Col rolled over in his arms and he could see the unshed tears in her eyes, and Pearce wondered what she felt. Did she sense the longing that he felt? Did she too imagine what it would be like to finally be married? Or did she just think it was a sweet gesture? Pearce squashed his self doubt away as he told himself that Col appreciated it for what it was - that this meant that they would have their forever some day. Pearce cupped Colās face and kissed her, but he couldnāt stop the smile that carved itself permanently onto his face. He felt like the luckiest man alive ā and he knew that that was a permanent feeling when with Col. With his arms around Col and the promise held between them, Pearce kissed Col once more. āI love you so much, you know that right?ā he asked, already knowing what her answer would be.
