Slayer’s Night Sentinels: cool knights with undying loyalty
Also Slayer’s Night Sentinels:
Straight people feel so comfortable calling others weird for saying "Doom Slayer looked so good being shipped / has great chemistry with [male character]" but they can never EVER handle getting called weird back for forcing their heterosexual poster couple into every conversation, which not only was based on nothing but also actively stripped off Doomguy's core character trait and sanded down all his edges to fit into the romantasy framework. But hey. How dare we. Don't we know #they are the most oppressed and hated minority in the world. Why can't everything just go their way already so us weirdos could finally shut up.
Day 14
He was just as good at riding a dick as he was at fighting demons!
Inspired by this fic -> Just a bunny
Full pic for above
Unfortunately this seems to be the end of me because afterwards someone reported my account and I was terminated 😞 tumblr can't handle doomguy dickriding
What I'm going to say about this man...
Actually no not that. I want to mention that Doomguy has consistently shown more emotion / shown emotions with more depth, at a more intimate level when he is with other MEN.
Or male-presenting characters.
Doomguy acted the most naturally when he was with animals. But we can't deny the substantiality put into every time him and Valen interact. We had him pause mid-action, and then save Vega the queer sentient AI in 2016, and not to mention the Intern. Even in the codex he was described to sacrifice himself to save the Night Sentinels who saw him as a true-born warrior and their brother. Back when they couldn't put detailed expressions on him, and we could still feel the relationships he had with other male allies are flavorful and layered, through nothing but his body languages. Only exception is Samur, but hate is a different kind of emotional intimacy.
And now behold, the obvious care and concern he had towards Marok, before and after he fought him:
Look into the first gif, how much of his resolve was shaken by worry. The subtle quivering of his pupils. He lifted his eyebrows as a telltale sign of sympathy. He unclenched his jaw and unpursed his lips to soften his facial expression, as he became open to help the boy.
Did I mention the Wretch/Architect? Every time those two interact you just feel like you are witnessing something you shouldn't.
To give in to overanalysis.
The leg is the longest limb of one's body, kicking Samur with it creates a distance, which is a clear sign of "Not wanting anything to do with someone". Likewise, Doomguy has been consistently keeping his contact with thira non-existent, giving her his back 4 times, once turning while she was talking to him, and his hands are working, completely disengaged with the supposed conversation. During the "save the princess" scene, he paused mid-action, only to avoid her hand (important point later), chose a spot very much away from it, and used only two fingers to make contact. Such choices of body language are actively creating distances, they are indications of a lack of interest and refusal to engage beyond necessary.
On the other hand, every time Commander Valen and Doom Slayer met face the face, their fingers are almost always brushing. Once when Valen was handing him the Celestial locator and they had a little tug of war. The other when he was resurrected and Valen handed him his helmet. After everything that had happened and all the disagreement they had with each other's actions, they still felt comfortable with each other's proximity.
For a nonverbal character, Doomguy is extremely hands-on. Every hand movement and where he places his hand is very intentionally animated to explicitly tell the player about what's going on in his mind as well as the subtext of a scene. E.g. The part where he slowly pulled out the doomblade to finish Samur off, showing he is conflicted.
And then there's the Wretch:
I think the Marok boss fight did awesome job storytelling. It really shown that Doom Slayer never went for the kills like he used to. Despite how ANGRY he was at the boy, he didn't want to hurt him. The only thing on his mind was how to save Marok. Every "phase" ended with Marok temporarily gaining back consciousness before being re-tethered. He punched and choked Marok with those powerful hands that can certainly break neck if he wanted to, but he just wanted to get the latter out of control or knock him out. Some teeth may have fallen, but no major damage was done. Marok was only collapsing from the overexertion, looking confused and terrified. And this is his first expression. Immediately choosing mercy.
The arena was surrounded by the same black smoke as in the flashback. Then the explosion triggered his ptsd so bad he hallucinated that little girl again. Marok is the little girl, but this time he realized he really couldn't do anything about it, and he has made peace with himself.
The Wretch/Architect is a completely different story.
He was smiling (Everyone pay attention the Doom Slayer is SMILING oh my god) at him. But there is also sorrow in his eyes because he could foresee the future where they part ways, perhaps even become enemies. But for now, His darkest truth was laid bare in front of this creature, and Architect finally decided to not hide from him anymore, and although the key was destroyed, everything was okay after all. Perhaps for the first time ever in the entire Doom timeline he let his guard down and trusting entirely, you could see how tender his eyes are. It's 2026 and Doomguy is doing the gay yearning.
After the praetor suit was made he returned to this guarded look. But those eyes are still saying so much. How much he is going to miss this place and the person he meet here. He knows what he has to do and who he is now, but still it's hard not to miss when he was taken care of and and someone who fully understood the extent of his wounds. Also he is very comfortable with Architect dressing him up, relaxed with every touch. They've spent some time together and you know he will carry it with him physically into his eternal war against Hell.
I'm not saying he's gay I'm saying he's not straight. At the very least he seemed to have zero chemistry with women of this world but All of it. Dialed to the maximum with the guys. Sorry. Guess that's just the way it is with Doom.
As a joke comparison this is his face in front of a female ally:
Probably sulking cuz he thought he was about to join Valen's search party...
Was trying to do merfolk but then he turned into a sea lion (seal)
Is he a selkie now
Call me the one friend who's too woke. But to say "YAYYYY Doomguy is FINALLY made into an actual character now they retconned his backstory to give him wife and kids" Is heteronormativity and amatonormativity talking.
Is he not " a real character™ " just because he was NOT in a canon romantic relationship? Is his story simply incomplete, and will only be completed once he got laid and had kids, and became another one of the champion of the undefeated heterosexual union and the traditional nuclear family value? Is that the one criteria for a "well-written" character and therefore HE is somehow lacking?
People say things like "You know he wasn't doing it JUST for Daisy" which would be correct, if they weren't ONLY pointing at the family photo AND NOTHING ELSE.
He lost all his marine friends who went to Mars alongside him who did just punched their CO. In Doom I, his biggest motivation was to go home, but when he finally did he came back to a ruin that was once his hometown. Imagine the civilian death if even a rabbit ended up a mounted head. Are those not good enough motivation for someone to want revenge against entire Hell? Only the death of romantic partner and offspring count as valid, or heavy enough life-altering tragic events? Is a story important only if it's about romantic relationships, and any other kind of love, be it platonic, familial, philia; they simply, naturally, had LESS emotional weight than The True Romance?
(The photo, by the way, didn't exist in classic doom at ALL. In Eternal is left near a Garbage Can as another easter egg, that was more likely a nod to Quake Ranger's family photo than anything that holds real emotional value to the story. Even "Daisy's hind leg" did the "memory token" better than this. The only confirmation of "It's his wife and kid" came from Hugo Martin casually commented about it ONCE during one of his streams. Certain people here are weaponizing it as a confirmation that Doomguy must be their straightest patriarchal romantasy daddy dom husband woobified perfect masculinity warrior and attacking fans who headcanon him queer aroace. Except the latter is A LOT MORE IN CHARACTER and compliant to the overall subtext DOOM has been exploring, than the former. sorry.)
Even if we don't quote Carmack, and I mean this quote:
His sexuality is left intentionally vague and it's good they did that. Sex or romantic love interest subplot is not (NEVER!) where a DOOM story is going to explore because 1. it's not important to a story about killing demons in Hell 2. it's not important to the development of the main character 3. it's SO NOT important Doomguy simply doesn't care to know what sex is AND that's a GOOD thing.
Before anyone jump in to say "He can still be non-cishet or aroace and married to a woman or have children" you do realize the point is queer people are oppressed because they do not follow that norm and it's important when we have someone like Doomguy to NOT being part of THAT and still be considered an iconic, self-realized and extremely cool character by the majority of the fans.
There was so many things to explore in Fortress of Doom that can tell us Doomguy's personality as well as his human side, but SOME OF YOU ONLY NOW wants to recognize him as a real character because they finally decided to double down on making another video game "dead wife avenger" guy and add it to the list. Don't joke with me now.
Doomguy was never "NOT an actual character" when the first thing we knew about him was that he punched his CO for ordering them to shoot civilians, thus broke the stereotype of 80s American patriot GI Joe protagonist. He may be a marine but he's one of the most obvious anti-authority "fuck the system and whoever thinks themselves more important than the rest of us" guy, actually.
The next thing was he watches "restrictive flicks" when he was on Mars, so he isn't one of those repressed model citizens either. Then, despite being the toughest, survivalist one-man army who gets angry and aggressive easily and probably had daddy issues (if we consider the part where he sees Commander Keen, likely his father or grandfather's hanging body), he has a RABBIT as pet or family and HE personally named her Daisy.
"Maybe Daisy is his kid's rabbit" NO DAISY IS. HIS. RABBIT. It's part of his characterization if not one of the most important part. When you want a character to be more human, or have more depth, you give them something that contradicts his archetype. Combining it with the fact he doesn't need a relationship or sex, and felt happy living alone with his pet rabbit, Daisy then holds a broader, bigger significance to Him. Maybe he wanted to improve his temper and bought Daisy, maybe he sees Daisy as a reminder to always protect the most vulnerable. Maybe he sees himself in Daisy because they're both mute. But now Daisy is just a representation of his family or kid.
Is that really a good thing?
