Hi, I'm Peculiar, I run this blog!

About me: I’m old and I make artwork in Source Filmmaker, mostly of Left 4 Dead 2. I prefer not to state anything further about myself beyond that. Call me Pecs, most people do!

The Mission Breakout movie...that isn't a Marvel film

@shaydystheshadowqueen suggested I should check out Thir13en Ghosts (2001) because it looked like Mission Breakout, and the original 13 Ghosts (1960) was reminiscent of the Haunted Mansion. When I researched further, it turned out the connections go MUCH deeper and get MUCH weirder than just appearances...

I'm still flabbergasted one of my silly comparasion comments lead to you watching this underrated ghost film. Not that you aren't wrong it really feels weird how similar these two are.

It does make some sense that Walt would use 13 Ghosts as an inspiration as, along with the silly ghosts, it was one of a few "gimmick" horror films at the time, using a form of 3D viewing that let you see the ghosts (this would be repeated with the remake, using a new kind of 3D glasses).

I'm glad your comment finally got me to watch these! I actually enjoyed the remake more than the original. It's one of my favorite haunted house movies now, actually. There's only so much you can do with that stock setup, but at least it gets really, really cool with the architecture and monster designs. Everyone should definitely watch both versions though.

I actually convinced two other people to give Thir13en Ghosts a try and both of them liked it too! Although their reactions to the Mission Breakout connections were pretty much opposite each other. One was "there's no way this could connect to Mission Breakout, it's too pretty to be that ugly building!" while the other was "I am considering this an honorary MCU movie now because it's just way too similar."

And it's interesting you bring up the 3D glasses gimmick--I remember hearing at some point that we almost lost Haunted Mansion to a retheme that would've relied on screens and 3D. As questionable as some changes to it have been, thank goodness that didn't happen!

Holy shit, my favorite Tower blogger (uh... maaaybe also the only Tower blogger I follow, oop-) watched my favorite early 2000s horror movie? Yes!!! You have no idea how cool it is to see these two interests connect, especially since I've been getting back into Thir13en Ghosts lately! It really is a damn shame that movie isn't more popular, isn't it.

Read through your blog post btw and... Wow, that actually is a startling number of similarities between Thir13en Ghosts and what little I know of Mission Breakout. There's definitely inspiration there, no doubt in my mind, especially with the connections you mentioned.

genuinely i don’t think it’s possible to easily explain the explicit part of online friendships to people who don’t Understand. i don’t mean like, explicit in the sense of “oh you’re sexting” or whatever. no. i mean when you and your friend start gleefully making up explicit sexual scenarios for your shared blorbos and you get giddier and giddier as you add more detail and you’ll be grinning at your screen as you type away at mach speeds. and it’s entirely nonsexual in an interpersonal sense, you’re not really getting Into it, but ohhhhh it’s soooooo fun and satisfying. and you can NEVER tell someone who doesn’t also do this that your mood is actively improved like fivefold because you and your friend played Sexual Tuoys together because they’ll go “what the FUCK.”
