it has come to my attention some people are not acquainted with roundabouts (latin roundus boutus). here is a handy guide for spotting different types in the wild:

this is a common/garden roundabout in its natural habitat. it prefers rain and dying grass as food sources.

this is its child. it may appear small and unassuming, but just watch it take down even the mighty range rover as it tries to make the tight bend.

sometimes they have twins instead. they resemble a pair of glasses, or tits. i once watched an old lady drive straight through both unharmed. would not recommend. deceptively dangerous.

this is a fancy ass roundabout, the average roundabout’s cousin. it has just returned from its gap year in thailand. its hobbies include condescendingly explaining simple concepts using complicated words and smiling with an air of superiority.

lastly, the most feared kind. only the bravest may take on this wild beast and survive. this is the magic roundabout. its young grow around it in grotesque sacs, bewildering the unlucky driver just trying to pop to the shops to get some milk. it is too late to save him now. tell his family he loved them. this is the end. the magic roundabout is the only true god. fear him.

We have them in the US, but they are less common. Some people here do know them as roundabouts; however, I think more people call them traffic circles or, in some regions, rotaries. Observe...

This one is in Hillsboro, Oregon and is quite like one near my grandmas house.

Lots of older neighborhoods all over the US have smaller ones like these.

But we have some of the larger varieties in big cities, especially on the east coast, like DuPont Circle in Washington DC or Columbus Circle in New York.

In the NW sometimes we're quirky-ass hipsters and jazz them up.

So. Yeah. We do ye olde roundabout in the US.

She was brought down by the House Committee on Unamerican Activities, and has been largely forgotten. But she was a sorcerer, and a hero.

My quick sketch took me 25 years.

Stop comparing yourself to other artists.

Actually tho that Cas sketch would be a really good one to copy for someone trying to hone those skills bc it doesn’t have the smooth blending and super fine detail of a finished draft. And you can see the brush strokes and big swaths of color to make a quick sketch easier to lay down. That's what my intro digital paint instructor would have us do in class. Class was about 4 hours and before moving into the lesson, the first 10-20 min he'd give us something like this (but landscapes or a still life) and have us get as far as we could. Paint in the main colors first to fill canvas and get the layout blocked, then refine a little more w each pass. Even just a few times a week for a few months of practicing this, we all got so much better with cool, recognizable work. I guess my point is, instead of being a whiny douche about it, this could have been a great opportunity to use the work of a master painter like @euclase to grow his own skill. But whatev.

My textbooks are a total wash on this subject, so I thought I'd ask the person who would know. Are there women artists from history who were realistic portrait painters like you? I always hear the same three or four names when people talk about women artists. Artemisia, Sofonisba, etc.
