The most interesting BMX Bandits live performance I've ever came across

A bunch of great songs from C86, Star Wars, Life Goes On and even songs from their 53rd & 3rd years. But in my opinion the most interesting part are the covers, The Vaselines? The Groovy Little Numbers? Captain America? The Soup Dragons? Dead Kennedys??? It's incredible. When I clicked on the video I simply did not expect such a long set full of amazing covers (is it really a cover if the main songwriter is performing it with another band though?).

This is also my very favorite BMX Bandits lineup, featuring Gordon Keen and Eugene Kelly on guitar (both from Eugenius/Captain America), Joe McAlinden on bass (Groovy Little Numbers, Boy Hairdressers, Superstar), Francis MacDonald on drums (Boy Hairdressers, Teenage Fanclub) and of course the one and only Duglas T. Stewart on vocals.

Anyways, this isn't a very useful post but I really needed to talk about this somewhere.

I've no information about this photo, but I assume it must be around 1995. I do know that he quite liked The Beach Boys and the BMX Bandits covered "Hey Little Tomboy", which was released on Duglas' album "Frankenstein" and later on "The Rise & Fall Of BMX Bandits" compilation.

I learned about Suckle (Glasgow, Scotland) from an email sent by Monorail Music. Suckle is the vehicle for the work of Frances McKee - formerly of The Vaselines. Stephen Pastel (co-owner of Monorail Music) was there at the beginning of The Vaselines, and mentions how some critics of the band harped on their "non-technical" skills. Well, that may be true, but there's nothing amateurish about Suckle "Against Nurture".

It's beautiful, lush and melodic. It really recalls Look Blue Go Purple, The Velvet Underground, and Syd Barrett. It was produced by Paul Savage of The Delgados and was originally released on Chemikal Underground (the label started by The Delgados).

While this isn't available physically on Bandcamp, it is on Discogs. Also, Monorail is offering signed copies of the original release.

Eugenius / Captain America, Melody Maker 12 September 1992

Love how they all talked well about Nirvana... Also, I keep reading about a supposed c86 football team featuring Eugene (the team's goalkeeper, according to this), Stephen Pastel, Duglas Stewart, Bobby Gillespie and more... I don't even know if it's a joke anymore.

Before any of those bands, they were in The Pretty Flowers (also named The Child Molesters at some point) and played a show with The Famous Monsters (a band Eugene Kelly was in at the time, however from what I know this is a different band than the 90s band Famous Monsters that features Eugene and Norman Blake). Frances said she didn't like the name Pretty Flowers, she wanted the name to be Child Molesters.

Frances and Duglas. She met Duglas before meeting Eugene, and she said that since she had gone to a girls only school she wasn't used to talking to the opposite sex, but talking to Duglas didn't feel like talking to the opposite sex.

The Vaselines' first gig, 1986 in Bristol supporting The Pastels, before even releasing Son Of A Gun. The recordings from this show were included on Enter The Vaselines.

Don't remember where I found the first pic, but the other two are from Eugene's twitter.
