So, for those of you who don’t know, Nicolas Carter, a writer for Cards Against Humanity, recently came out about the discrimination and abuse he received from the white CAH writing staff. Specifically, how he was sent to a mental institution for five days after he voiced his concerns about the other writers wanting to put a card containing the n-word in one of the expansion packs.
I highly urge all of you to read Nicolas’s article above in full for yourself. It’s an uncomfortable yet important and insightful look into racial discrimination the workplace, in mental health and in creative fields such as comedy. If you have already read the article and are, understandably, no longer comfortable with supporting Cards Against Humanity, I made a short list of card game alternatives to CAH you can check out for yourself:
Dixit A storytelling card game for ages 8 and up where you have to guess which of the surreally illustrated cards is the storytellers with only thier one sentence description of it to go off of. You can buy it on amazon or pre-owned on eBay
Slash: Romance Without Boundries A crossover matchmaking game inspired by shipping fanfiction. Physical copies are super rare and expensive online. But thankfully, there’s a printable version you can find here.
Apples to Apples Basicaly a kid-friendly version of CAH rules wise. Available on Amazon and eBay.
Say Anything A card game where one person asks a question, everyone else writes thier own answers on the cards, and whoever has the funniest answer wins. Available on Amazon and eBay.
Pretend You're Xyzzy An online CAH clone you can play on your desktop.
As you can tell from the length of this list, I’m not exactly an expert when it comes to tabletop card games. So if anyone has any other good card game recommendations like these, feel free to add more in the notes. especially if there’s any card games created by black creators/black owned businesses.
CAH announced new expansions and I thought I’d share this again
Bringing this back in honor of CAH being back in the news
