“It’s super warm out and sunny and I have the day off. So, water fight?”
old times | penny&annie
“I always told you that you’d come back,” Annie said with a conspiratory nudge. She looked genuinely pleased to see her old friend though and steered Penelope over to where the little plastic fake glasses of prosecco were laid out. “You know I got an offer to go to London? I turned it down though. It was when mum started getting sick,” she explained with a shrug, taking a sip on her drink. “Did you go to the Tate? They’ve had so many new exhibits there recently that I would love to see. That and the latest installation at Somerset house.. Sorry! I’m completely interrogating you!”
Penelope nodded. Annie had always said that. But Penny hadn’t always believed her. When she first left and things with her family were still so raw and heated, coming back wasn’t something tangible she saw in her future. Now things were still awkward and still tender, but the fact that she moved back did seem natural. “London is great, but I think I’d much rather be here. Things obviously worked out great for you.” Penny smiled at her. “I did go to the Tate a few times. I went everywhere. Every museum, every tourist spot. I just couldn’t help myself. Please, interrogate away, I love telling the stories I have. As long as I get to interrogate you after.”
“Oh, yeah. I guess it has been. I’m sorry.” Matt said with complete sincerity, smiling down at the blonde. “I am! Two weeks now. Just kind of getting into the groove of things.”
“It happens sometimes. All we can do is look forward and make the next week better.” She said with a smile and pushed herself to her feet. “Well, good choice. This place is great. I’m sure it won’t take you too long to get used to things.”
He noticed the coffee everywhere and frowned, grabbing napkins to help clean everything up. When it was mopped up, he excused himself for a moment, coming back with a new, full cup. He held it out for her, offering a smile. “A new one for you,” Luca’s accent wasn’t as strong as it used to be when he was younger, but it was still obviously there. “Da-Yes! Yes, it’s one of my favorites,” he smiled.
Penny smiled as he brought her a new coffee. “You didn’t have to do that, it was my own fault. But thank you. I know you were just leaving, but do you by any chance have some time? I’d love to make up for my own clumsiness in some way. And Pride and Prejudice is one of my favourites as well by the way.” She momentarily forgot about her own book in favour of his.
“Definitely not the only thing. Did I mention how much I missed a certain someone? A certain someone named Penny?” She wiggled an eyebrow with a smile, looking up at Penelope — very happy to see her.
“Wow, well she’s very lucky, this Penny.” Penelope said with a laugh and nudged Amelia’s with her elbow. “I missed you too, by the way. It feels like you were gone for a year.”
He’d been sitting at a secluded table in The Tea Room; a cup of blueberry and jasmine tea in hand, for the past hour or so. ‘Pride and Prejudice’ was open to page 239 when Luca decided to call it quits, his body relaxed, eyes tired. The tall boy yawned and finished up the last of his now-cooled tea before he stood and gathered his messenger bag. Always the clumsy one, Luca spun around a bit too fast and slammed his chest into the person that had been walking past him. “La drac-fuck, I’m so sorry!” He managed to apologize, looking up. “Are you alright?”
“No, I’m sorry, my bad.” Penny said and shook her head at the half spilt coffee she had just brought. She hadn’t been looking where she was going at all, instead too focused on the blurb of the book she was carrying in her other hand. “I’m fine, are you alright? That as hot coffee, and I-” Penelope stopped suddenly when she noticed the book in the man’s hand. “Is that pride and Prejudice?”
“If there’s something I’ve really missed about home it has to be this,” Amelia said with a bright smile and took another bite of her roasted marshmallow. She had only just returned from her two-week vacation the night before, but she had long since unpacked and settled back in again. “You want another one? There’s an entire bag over there.”
“I hope that’s not the only thing.” Penelope said with a chuckle and sat down beside Amelia. “Of course I want another one.” She reached over and pulled out a marshmallow. She didn’t bother waiting to roast it but just took a bit straight away.
Matt turned and saw the girl who spoke to him and gave her a small smile. “Well, I would hope not. But it definitely is a perk.” Matt had never seen her before. Stepping closer, he shoved his hands in his pockets and gave a tiny shrug. “You alright? All…curled up on the bench like that?”
“Yeah, it’s just been one helluva week.” Penelope said with a smile and then pushed herself up to her feet. “You’re new around here then?”
Matt leaned against the fencing along the bay and looked down at the water. He hadn’t lived this close to water before and he actually enjoyed it. The sea breeze, the fresh air, was almost therapeutic. Maybe he should’ve come here after Mammy had died. He shook his head at that thought, knowing well enough that Georgia had been the right place. Shutting his eyes, Matt let out a deep sigh. Was he making a mistake coming here? He just needed answers. There were worse places to come to for answers. “At least it’s pretty here,” he admitted.
Penelope had been minding her own business, sat curled up by the beach and letting the sound of the waves and breeze calm her. She hadn’t heard someone walk near her and stop, but she did hear the man’s words. She looked up at him and tilted her head. “Is that all we’ve got going for us then? Aesthetic?”
Duncan turned around to see who it was that was talking to him. “Hmm?” He asked, head tilted slightly. “Am I in the way? I’m sorry, here, let me help!”
“That would actually be great if you could.” Penny said with a smile as she struggled with the stack of books she was carrying.
“I’m having a bad day, Penny,” Violet told her, wiping her hands across her face. “I needed to feel close to them.”
Penny offered a careful smile and crossed her arms over he chest, closing the distance between them. “I’m sorry, Vi. They’re here for you, all the time. I’m sure it was them that convinced me to walk this way today, so I could be here for you. Do you want to get a coffee and sit on this bench for a bit? Maybe talk?”
You are a brave soul. Braver than me. Lets be off then, find some adventure.
“Yes, let’s be off.” Penelope said and stood up. “Lead the way.”

“I’m glad you came!” Annie gave her old friend a hug, careful to mind their two drinks between them. “I’ve been good! Busy.. This place was a shell when I bought it and it’s been a couple of years graft to get it this full of amazing work from everyone in the area.. How was London? What brings you back?
“Of course I came.” Penelope said with a smile. They loved art and would be there anyway, but seeing annie’s name on the information had definitely made up her mind as well. It had been too long since they had seen each other. “You’ve done amazing, seriously.” She said, looking around at the wonderful space and the amazing party. “I uh, London was great. I’ve been back a few months, just kinda keeping to myself a bit. I just really missed this town and my family. I guess I kinda belong here.”
It was one of those things Mandy had never thought she’d have to do, but here she was, climbing out through the window of her own place and onto the lawn in front. Somehow she’d lost her keys and the front door wouldn’t open with them. Admittedly it wasn’t the greatest thing to be doing in terms of safety, but she couldn’t stay sat there all day waiting for help. As she straightened up, she spotted somebody on the path not far away and cringed slightly, but then called out, “What? Never seen someone climb through a window before?”
Penny stood froze with wide eyes as she looked at Amanda. She had been unabashedly watching her climb through her window, wondering what the hell was going on. “Um, no, I’ve seen it, just...You’re very agile.”
It wasn’t a particularly busy hour of the day for Harpoole’s local coffee shop, so Dani paid no attention to how long she was taking at the register trying to decide what to order. A simple tea and pastry would suffice, but perhaps it was a day to try something new and get something she never had before. “Ummm let’s see..” The blonde said mostly to herself and to the cashier, subtly letting them know she would need a minute longer. Unfortunately, Dani also hadn’t realized a small queue had formed behind her…
“Need some help deciding?” Penelope asked, leaning on the counter next to Dani. She had joined the queue just behind the other woman, and was planning on saying hello when she had finished ordering. But that took longer than expected. As the queue began to grow longer behind her, she decided to politely move her along and catch up at the same time.
Task #2 - Important Moment
Leaving Harpoole Bay wasn’t an easy decision for Penelope. She had already had to pack up and leave one home behind when she had lost her grandmother. Loosing the woman, the only form of a parent she had ever known at that point, was hard enough, but with it she also lost her home and the life she had lived for 10 years there. Now, 8 years later, the situation was different. Penny was choosing to leave Harpoole Bay behind and go to London for university, but it didn’t really feel that different.
Penny sat in her full car at the services on the motorway on her way to london to move into her student residence and looked down at her phone. She had Leo’s number up on her phone and she wasn’t sure about whether to call or not. Going to London, going to university, was exciting. She was really looking forward to it. But it still felt like she was leaving a home behind, especially with the state of her relationships with her family. They were still alive and they would still be there after she was finished with her 3 year degree if she wanted to go back. It wasn’t the same as with her grandmother. But she hadn’t had a decent conversation with her mum for weeks, and the last time she talked to her dad had resulted in a vicious fight. And it almost felt like Leo was just as much a stranger as he had been when Penelope first moved to Harpoole Bay.
It was hard, to leave behind a life and home and family that had meant so much to her. They had given her a second chance, given her a reason to keep growing and keep trying. But what could she do? Things had crumbled away, and she had set herself on another path now. She backed out of her contacts and locked her phone, throwing onto the seat beside her. She couldn’t keep looking back. At some point she had to start looking forwards. And Penny decided that would be this point.
