..Hello?
Like a Dream
Here at the quiet limit of the world,
A white-hair’d shadow roaming like a dream"
---
He'd lived a happy life.
That's what he told himself amidst the delirium his old age caused, grasping feebly at memories that had, over the years, begun to evade him. He'd had a happy childhood with a family that had loved him, repaid them by becoming rebellious in his teenage years. He'd found himself almost in a car accident (a memory that still stood out for reasons he himself couldn't explain) that made him rethink the way he was, settling down a little and focusing on his future. He'd grown closer to his twin, mother and father in the process, gone off to college to pursue a career in being a doctor. He met a girl and fell in love, worked hard and travelled the world until finally he asked her to marry him. They had a long happy marriage and two children, a girl and a boy. He couldn't remember their names now.
His wife had passed away two months before. They'd been happily married for sixty years. And finding himself a frail old man lying in a hospital bed, visited by those who loved him but he couldn't quite remember, he knew that his time was also coming to an end. He was content with that. Death was not something he feared, and by now he was growing tired of the way reality and dreams had begun to collide around him - the faces of his visitors had a habit of shifting to people he thought he should know; a pink haired boy with a stitched up face, a warped version of his brother with a third eye, an androgynous figure that filled him with dread or a blonde haired girl with a kind face. At night he dreamt of cliffs and tumbling skull-shaped stones, of forests and spikes and great and powerful guardians. And every night they returned with such an intensity that he knew, deep in his heart, that somewhere they were real.
He knew then, when the visions of that strange other world appeared before him as he lay wide awake, that it was time for him to go.
And he went happily, gladly, to The End.
---
He'd led a rather miserable afterlife.
Ash had returned to the realm of the conscious and sane after Norton cleared his mind. And there had been a brief time of happiness, where he surrounded himself with the other Enders, the people he called friends now, and tried to live his death to it's full extent. But as the days wore on his health had deteriorated - with no shadow to help him and now light powers to speak of he struggled to move from place to place. His grip on their reality was lost again and he grew distant, sad and confused.
And then he had wandered off into the Mind world and left everyone behind. He slipped into the shrubbery and dug himself a bed - a grave - and covered himself in weeds before simply falling asleep.
In his dreams he lived out his life as he'd always wanted to. He was happy there. The void no longer existed to hurt him, and sleep caused him no harm. The End continued to move around him but he remained in his coffin of bushes and thistles, whiling away his eternity in sleep as he waited for his shadow's return.
It was a day after Gem found him that he heard the whispers of another voice coaxing him to wake up, a gentle push against his consciousness that willed his empty white eyes to open, and his third eye to swivel blearily to look at his face.
And after months and months of silence he breathed in, slowly and methodically, and reached out a hand to touch the girl's, trying to get her attention.
"Hello," He started, swallowing past the dryness of his throat as his brow furrowed.
"Who are you?"
[ Ash babe ]
Norton nodded, slowly releasing his grip. He kept his hands on Ash’s shoulders, inching back slightly so he could look Ash in the eyes. “I don’t know how long this will take, so just… keep fighting to stay still, all right?”
He then moved his hands to Ash’s head, but as soon as he touched the skin he felt a burning shoot through his arms. Of course this would be harder. He grit his teeth together, keeping his palms on Ash’s temples anyway, struggling to keep his grip gentle and not try to crush his brother’s skull between his hands.
It was, if anything, much more of a mess than Tommy’s had been. Once again guilt stabbed him as he mentally kicked himself for not staying when he first pulled them out of the void. He quickly forced the thoughts from his mind, however. They weren’t going to help him now.
He closed his eyes before setting to work. As predicted, They started screaming and shrieking at him. What he didn’t expect, however, was the burning in his arms to amplify. He let out a soft hiss, letting go of keeping the shadows that spewed from him under control in favor of focusing more on getting the masses from the Void out of Ash’s mind.
Which was a struggle, to say the least. Everything was so deeply rooted at this point that getting anything out quickly without damaging Ash was nigh impossible. Going so slow made his teeth grind together even more. His fingers twitched with the need to curl. The more he cleared, the worse the burning in his arms got, and he was fairly certain it grew further up as well.
When he finally managed to uproot the last of it, he quickly shoved it as far back into the Void as he could. And even then he kept pushing, going farther and farther, fingers starting to dig into Ash’s hat before he let go suddenly, not being able to push any more through the burning that wouldn’t stop.
“FFFFUCKING HELL,” he hissed between clenched teeth, waving his arms around as if it would make it stop. It did lessen, though, and when he was at a tolerable level he looked down to his arms. They were entirely black now, up to his sleeves. He didn’t bother to look under them, though. Instead he went right back to Ash, standing close again but not quite wanting to touch him. Not yet.
“Hey, ya feeling okay now? Can ya think straight? Can ya hear me?”
He nodded once again, taking a shaky inhale of breath as he did his best to ready himself for whatever came next. But he couldn't prepare him for the soul tearing agony he was in almost instantly. Letting out an agonized scream, his hands snapped around Norton's wrists, nails digging in as he struggled and both sides of his mind began to plead and wail for him to stop.
Ash relieved their deaths over and over. Smashed into the windshield and the car's frame as it caved in, only for it to reverse and play over again. Then he was back in the void, back to the agony of the shadows burrowing their way inside him, trying to find Tommy and never quite reaching him.
Then he was dead. Well, not dead. As dead as a dead person could be. His third eye rolled back in his head and, when Norton released him, he collapsed to his knees, only catching himself when his awareness did a sort of reboot, bringing him back again. Ash kneeled there on his hands and knees, swaying on the spot as he vaguely made out Norton's words, asking him things.
He opened and closed his mouth, tried to keep himself from toppling over, then let out a loud, over the top laugh.
A genuine, relieved and happy sound. Tears sprung to his eyes as he got to his feet, stumbling around a little before he lunged forward and pulled his brother into a hug, burying his face into his chest as his shoulders trembled with sobs and laughter.
"Yes! Yes I can think straight!! I can hear you! I can hear everything, SEE everything! Holy fuck you did it!! You did it oh my god Norton you're the best brother in the world oh my god!"
Then he pulled back, settling his hat back into place and wiping his eyes on his arm, still shivering with tiny chuckles. "Oh my god...so, how long was I in the void? It's felt like weeks! Did Tommy get out? He's okay, right? Did he only just get out like me or did you get him out a while ago?"
He tilted his head at his brother, smiling lopsided, his eyes bright and snowy white, betraying no recollection of being the way he was before.
[ Ash babe ]
The corners of Norton’s mouth twitched and his hands has started to shake, but he didn’t falter otherwise. He forced a smiled onto his face, despite his insides coiling and churning at the sight and sound of what his brother had become.
“I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner…” As soon as Ash took a step, Norton quickly closed the distance between them. He forced Ash’s arms down as he hugged him around the chest, pinning the arms to Ash’s sides. His hug was tight, at first with genuine feeling behind it before it turned into simply making sure Ash didn’t get away somehow.
“I’ll fix it. I’ll fix everything I messed up. I promise. I promise I’ll fix it all.” He paused, taking in a deep breath. His voice had started to strain. He slowly let it out. “I’ll fix it. I’m going to let you go, and I need you to not run from me, okay? I need you to not move away. Just stay right here, okay? I don’t want to have to play games just to help you.”
Ash didn't fight the hug that pinned his arms to his sides, rocking on the spot as his babble sputtered into silence and he relaxed, just a little. He lowered his head, forehead against his brother's shoulder as he groaned in pain, his knees almost buckling underneath him. "Missed you missed my brother missed you I'm sorry Ash is sorry forgive him forgive me." He whispered, nodding along with his words as if agreeing with them.
But then he jerked and struggled a bit, once again spouting blames and claims of being happy with how he was now, fighting to keep himself in control long enough to listen. Grinding his teeth and shaking his head as if to clear it, he let out a tiny whimper as he nodded quickly. "Yes yes stay still won't move Ash promises Ash stays for Norton just for Norton I promise I swear it."
And he meant it, too. He wouldn't allow himself to move, wouldn't take even a step until this was all finally over. He'd waited way too long for this, to have his mind and body, and brother, back. He wouldn't screw this up. Not now.
[ Ash babe ]
The leaves had all started to look the same at this point. A whole bunch of useless greenery that couldn’t tell him where his brother was at this point. The spot he had left him had been empty for a while, the grass having been upright and growing unhindered. Anywhere else he looked has been just as empty, as if people had started avoiding Mind.
Although, to be fair, he would avoid Mind at this point too. If he could. Unfortunately, this is wehre he had been directed where his brother was. At least he had stayed in the same world, but still. Everything looked the same and the longer he searched the more aggravated he got at every sunbeam and every bush that didn’t hold anything that said he was getting closer to Ash.
He paused, gritting his teeth together for a moment before punching a tree next to him. Hard. More shadows poured from his fist, shadows that probably would have been blood if he was able to bleed. At least he could still feel pain. It brought him back into focus, and it was then that the rustling he was hearing became obvious. After all, there was no wind in The End.
He rushed to it, wasting no time at all. Once he got closer to it, however, he slowed down. He stopped completely when he saw Ash, a frown creeping over his face. He looked just as much a mess as he sounded.
He crept closer, trying to make himself as least threatening as possible. Hands out, palms up, steps soft, not hunched over and belly and neck exposed.
“Hey, brother. Been a while.”
The fight was almost over now. His moments of sanity were growing less and less common, ever so slowly replaced entirely by the manic, void produced version of him that had been in charge for the past couple of weeks. It had slowly convinced him that everyone was an enemy, that pain was good, that he was happy this way, and it wouldn't be long before he lost everything that he had been upon reaching The End.
So there Ash was, fighting his internal struggle with his own body, his twitching grudge-like movements causing him to become entangled in vines, tripping him up and sending him sprawling in the grass, growling and snarling to himself until he heard Norton's approach, going silent.
Or, as silent as he could be. As the days had progressed he'd grown as sickly as a dead man could be, every breath he drew in coming as a pained gasp. His eyes sought out his brother, black pools of nothing sunken into his face, his third eye completely unfocused and pupil practically gone. But he wouldn't allow himself to appear weak, not in front of Norton.
So he struggled to his feet, a rasping laugh (or was that a sob) rattling from his lips as he took several uneasy steps towards him, grinning.
"Hey brother BROTHER BROTHER KILLED YOU BROTHER killed you then you killed me sent me to the VOID SENT ME TO THE VOID MADE ME BETTER MADE ME COMPLETE your fault all your fault fix me LEAVE ME please help me."
His arms were outstretched towards Norton, trembling and jerking as if he was arguing himself over whether he was looking for comfort or going to strangle him. Either way he had to get closer for that, so he took another step forward, shaking on his feet.
