Self Portrait (1923). Romaine Brooks (American, 1874-1970). Oil on canvas. Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Self Portrait depicts a steely figure attired in a riding habit, carrying herself confidently and with elegance. She stares relentlessly out from beneath the brim of her hat, with eyes that could be either frightened or condemning. Her mouth, corners upturned, either smiles or sneers. The ruins behind her, as ambiguous as her expression, add to the air of uncertainty.

Tänzerin Baladine Klossowska (Merline) (1901). Eugen Spiro (German,1874- 1972). Oil on canvas. Berlinische Galerie – Landesmuseum für Moderne Kunst.

Spiro paints his sister as a dancer. She was born Elisabeth Dorothea Spiro and married the painter and art historian Erich Klossowski. She pursued her own artistic career under the name Baladine Klossowska. She met Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainer Maria Rilke in 1919 and they became lovers.

Really enjoy that this is the artist's sister. There aren't enough brother/sister stories out there.

The statuesque subject of this painting, Anna, or Nanna, Risi was married to a cobbler in Rome when Sir Frederic Leighton painted this portrait of her. She would go on to become one of the most portrayed women of her time, modeling for numerous painters and sculptors, for whom she was the epitome of Roman beauty.

Can't get enough of Mary Beth! This wicker chair is still in her studio and continues to show up in her new paintings -- though I haven't sat in it.
