She had felt weird the whole weekend. Not sick exactly, just off.
Her stomach hurt. Her back ached. She kept overheating for no reason, and every smell in her apartment suddenly made her nauseous. By Sunday night she was exhausted enough to fall asleep fully dressed on top of her blankets, telling herself she was probably coming down with something.
On Monday morning when calling her best friend, her friend joked that maybe she was pregnant.

By Tuesday morning, her jeans no longer fit right. Not just sitting a little tighter, but too uncomfortable to sit down in while buttoned.

“I took a test this Monday, I’ve only missed one period,” she answered.
The woman looked at her with visible confusion before turning the monitor slightly. The baby on the screen did not look a few weeks old. It looked developed. Moving. Large enough that she could clearly see the faint shape of it.
The scan estimated twenty-six weeks…
By Thursday, she could feel movement constantly. Strong kicks beneath her ribs. Rolling motions that made her stop mid-sentence and grab the edge of counters for balance. Her body changed visibly over the course of hours now, stomach stretching tighter and rounder each time she caught her reflection.
People started staring. Coworkers whispered when they thought she couldn’t hear them.
An old lady at the grocery store asked if she was having twins.
She laughed it off because the alternative, admitting she was terrified, felt impossible.

By Sunday, she was showing thirty-nine weeks pregnant. The realization settled over everyone around her slowly, horrifically. A single week had taken her from a positive pregnancy test to the edge of labor.
That night, she stood alone in front of the bathroom mirror with both hands resting beneath the impossible weight of her stomach. The baby shifted hard enough to visibly move her entire belly.
For a moment, fear threatened to swallow her whole. Then another kick landed beneath her hand. Strong, steady and alive.
And despite everything, despite the terror, despite the impossible reality of what was happening to her, she was excited.
