some of the changes from the books in the heated rivalry show are so random like why is jj’s surname changed from boiziau to dagenais? why are ruby & jade changed to ruby & emma? why is jackie spelled jacki and carter vaughan is vaughn? why are scott’s parents now car crash victims who died when he was 12 instead of his mother dying of an illness when he was 15?
I get some changes like kip’s mother and sister and some other characters not being in the show bc I guess they’re not that important to the story and some scenes have to be cut for time, and stuff like changing boston bears to boston raiders makes sense because it’s too similar to boston bruins. but yeah just these changes are strange to me, I guess they don’t hugely matter but I’m just like why did they need to be changed though?? I have heard that andrei became alexei in the show bc jacob forgot his name lmao but idk why these other changes??
I can tell most people haven’t read Role Model with the way they talk about the centaurs and how they would react to Hollanov PDA. When Troy kisses Harris in the locker room when he comes out to them and he is in a state of undress while doing so and they all cheer for him. Also Bood tells Troy to kiss Harris for good luck before their pride night game that Troy comes out to the world. So the Centaurs 100% will make Shane and Ilya kiss for good luck before games and not a chaste peck that Shane would do. No they want a proper kiss! Again and this time with feeling!
Honestly the "but Peeta wanted kids so bad" line from the Mockingjay epilogue is really funny to me because for three books Katniss has been projecting her desire for children onto a guy who hasn't really ever verbally expressed any interest in having kids, so I do genuinely think the whole "kids vs. no kids" debate happened entirely internally for Katniss and one day she just went "ok, you win, let's have kids" and Peeta's at the kitchen table like"?????? Ok??????"
I think the reason why the fans who act morally superior over calling her Jane and refuse to call her El bother me so much is that 1. It feels ableist because when I’ve pointed out to them that she’s canonically been shown to prefer El, some of them have straight up told me that she doesn’t have the capacity to choose what she wants to be called 2. To me it seems like a blatant attempt by a certain fandom to erase her relationship with Mike 3. It gives me the vibes that you’d ignore someone’s chosen name in real life
You know despite the attention he's had most of his life, I truly do think that that conversation with Dustin was the probably first time in his life Steve Harrington ever felt truly and utterly irreplaceable and precious to someone else. Imagine thinking that you're mostly just the guy who's there to take the hits (and yes your friends do love you but you think they'd learn to be ok without you eventually) to then be HIT with the reality that someone's world would simply crumble without you in it. Dustin and Steve you shine brighter than all the stars in the sky I am so serious
if I had a nickel for every time a show I liked ended with the main character separated from their found family when it could’ve easily been avoidable, a female main character who was in an unnecessary love triangle ending up single so she can be an independent girlboss, a last minute barely fleshed out boyfriend for the one gay character, and a wlw relationship that ends up being broken up in the same season, and one of the show’s creators got divorced which may or may not have resulted in the finale being shit from a butt, I’d have 2 nickels which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice
#babies who yearn STRANGER THINGS (2x09 | 5x07)
el is alive because with every important character death in the show (whether important bc they were a major character or just necessary for the plot) we were shown their death or their body (barb, bob, billy, brenner’s 2nd death in s4, jason, fred, chrissy, patrick, eddie, alexei, benny hammond etc) but if we didnt see a body then they weren’t dead (brenner “dying” offscreen in s1 meaning he was not dead so he was brought back, no body for hopper in s3 so he was not dead and was brought back) therefore el will come back because she is not dead 🙂↕️
I’m sorry it’s been over 12 hours since I watched the finale and I am still fuming what the hell
ok so some things I did like about the finale, love that steve is coaching baseball and going off on “adventures” with dustin, love lucas and max’s ending obviously and jopper getting engaged and jonathan making indie films at nyu, HOWEVER. my biggest “what the fuck” about this finale is el’s ending.
I just…what was that?? you have this girl who has been abused and tortured and exploited literally since the day she was born (you could argue even before then, since her mother terry was experimented on while pregnant with her). you have her having to be in hiding every damn season bc there’s always people trying to hunt her down and kill her. you give her a found family, friends, a boyfriend, a chance at a normal life. and then you RIP THAT ALL AWAY FROM HER???? you basically tell this abuse victim “ok so you’ll never be normal, you can never have a normal life, you’ll never belong anywhere, so your only options are 1) kill yourself or 2) disappear and never see your loved ones again”???? what kind of bullshit awful bleak depressing message is that? and then everyone is just expected to…move on??
the duffers are quoted as saying that there was no other possible ending for her and I just think that’s bullshit, you guys are literally the WRITERS you WROTE this story can you not just MAKE SOMETHING UP???? this show has never been 100% realistic, you have characters like steve and karen surviving injuries that should’ve killed them, max still has her vision despite bleeding from her eyeballs, hopper was brought back from the dead, who cares if it would be “unrealistic”!! I don’t see why el couldn’t have stayed with them. “oh but the military, oh but she would always be hunted” no idgaf?? she could’ve just faked her death so the military would think she was dead, and then they could have the lab blown up destroying all physical evidence of her (like documents of the experiments, photographs of her) so that over time the military would forget about her?? or something like that idk, or maybe she comes back after a few years when the cold war is over bc the government doesn’t need a weapon anymore. anyway with her going away she still has to be in hiding either way because clearly she’s gone away so no one will find her….also I don’t like the duffers saying she HAD to go away for the other characters to “move on,” as if she was a burden holding them back or something.
also, mike has already lost el before and you make him lose her again in a way that eerily echoes the “goodbye mike” finale scene in s1?? the scene that is used in s5 as an example of something vecna took from him?? one of his biggest traumas?? that’s just so cruel to me what the hell
Every now and then I remember that Kaz describes Inej as not even having a scent and how that bothers him because she can simply erase herself and the subsequent implication that he’s so afraid of her vanishing because he has a family who time has already forgotten, who vanished as if they never existed in the first place, and that the only person who grounds him in reality could disappear as easily as they did, that Inej’s lack of scent essentially becomes symbolic of the fact that no-one will notice or remember her, as she says there’s no-one left to mourn the girl she has become, but that in the bathroom scene, in this moment when he is the most vulnerable he has ever been with anyone and she is the most vulnerable the reader has seen her be out loud, when they try and struggle but believe that maybe they could try again, he notices that she smells of the hotel soap. And that’s when I lose my mind all over again.
Being best friends with your little brother Jonathan & Will in 2x01 and Steve & Dustin in 5x07
Coping with the volume 2 trailer by drawing my silly guys totally surviving ueueueueueueue
my hot take about stranger things ending is that I don’t think it would be against the core of the show for the main characters to all or mostly survive at the end. the show has always been about celebrating outsiders, and reaffirming that bullies, bigots, and bystanders are the worst kinds of people. the main characters survive again and again because the thesis of the show isn’t about how hard life is, but about how beautiful it is to experience life amongst friends even if there is something different or unusual about you. the goal of these characters has never solely been to defeat the evil and win, but to create a calmer life for themselves where they can enjoy each other in peace. the duffers, imo, have killed such a limited amount of characters amongst five seasons because it just isn’t necessary. in a show about parallel dimensions, monsters with no eyes and many teeth, and a little girl being a weapon of mass destruction, what good would reality do us? but in a show about found family, about hope, about finding a place among your community that accepts you, what a brilliant thing survival and happiness can be.
Stranger Things 3
Steve: Step back. *Trying to keep everyone safe*
Dustin: No
Steve: Step back, seriously
Dustin: NO! *Everyone is surprised* If you die, I die
Steve: Ok
Stranger Things 5 (Vol. 2 trailer)
Steve: If you die, I die *Being serious as hell*
Dustin: You die, I die
The growth from steve just responding like “ok 🙄” when dustin says “if you die i die” in s3, to him saying it to dustin fully seriously in s5….like fuckkkk that’s really his little brother he would die for and they can’t live without each other oh my god :(((
everyone who was being so dramatic saying they ruined steve & dustin’s friendship can CHILL now…look at them they’ll be FINE they worked it out they love each other
Dustin's "good job, Steven" was such a funny line and it upset me when I saw so many people of the ga complaining about his behavior and just dismissing him. People seem to not realize that he is still speaking the same way it's just that his demeanor is a little different. It's more attitude than just funny sarcasm but people seem to forget that that is his character. Dustin IS and has been a snarky little shit. Will is gentle and kind and caring whereas Dustin is loud and feisty and a little bit rude sometimes. He's clever and witty but he doesn't have loads of patience to sit and carefully spoon feed everyone all the info. He can be very kind and empathic when he wants to and he's very realistic and fair in situations but he's also (mostly) sarcastic and brash and very direct. It's just when he usually does it in prior seasons it's towards characters like Ted in s2 when he said, "Son of a bitch! You know you're really know help at all", which people found funny and endearing. Now it's not so much of a laughing matter because he's upset and depressed over Eddie. He's careless and reckless and it shows but he's still like a little brother to Steve and that line felt like it right down to his unenthusiastic clapping. I loved it. Gaten is doing such a good job with Dustin this season.
Dustin has always had sass; we see that in season one with how he talks to Lucas and Mike, but he really grows into it in season two, with the Ted comment and Lucas and Steve. Steve brings out the most of this sarcastic humor; they have a very brotherly relationship. I think the biggest difference in people's reactions to it now, is that usually it's buffered by affection, whether spoken or unspoken ("You put up a good fight but he kicked your ass" vs. "Do you have to be told everything? You're not a child"), however, in this season, it is only sarcasm. The only time we see any real outward affection is in the woods after the crawl announcement, when he plays around a bit with Mike and Lucas before noticing Will is having an episode. (though you could also argue there was a bit of affection in the drilling-a-hole-in-Steve's-car scene, but I think that was more personal satisfaction than anything else). Dustin is grieving right now, and it's overtaking him. Gaten put it really well in an interview, saying that sometimes when you're grieving someone, letting yourself be happy feels like it's disrespectful to the one you're grieving, like if you aren't constantly sad, it's a dishonor to their memory. Dustin is also angry because Eddie is still being unfairly blamed when he was a hero. He's currently pushing everyone away on purpose, including Steve, and baiting these bullies. It's an indirect form of self-harm; it's why he signed hellfire on the locker, because he wanted Andy to know it was him and come after him. Steve sees this best because even though Lucas, Mike, and Will are his best friends, Steve is a mentor brother figure; he can see past his bullshit (though I think Lucas can too, and just has a different approach than outward confrontation). For some reason, a lot of people aren't liking Steve and Dustin's dynamic this season, but I love it. I think Steve has been trying for over a year to get his little-brother-friend to open up to him, only to be continuously pushed away. I doubt this is the first time Andy has made things physical, just the most severe, so Steve has watched Dustin in pain mentally and physically, for 18 months, just for Dustin to lie to his face about it. It's frustrating. Steve cares so much, but too much is too much, and all he wants is Dustin to open up. Dustin feels like he can't, though, because he knows it might make him feel better, and he doesn't want to feel better; he wants Eddie -- back, alive and well, not slandered. I think both Gaten and Joe are doing amazing jobs, and I'm very excited for the volume two payoff of this emotional tension.
