it always struck me as odd that pinocchio was built to resemble carlo in every way, apparently except for the legion arm? given that the vessel has to match the ergo it's built to house so closely, i think this hc makes sense. geppetto going from thoughtful, personal, functional disability aids to mass produced cosmetic ones feels... apt, with how the themes of bodily autonomy and family are intertwined...
When I was an apprentice leather worker I made one of my many puns and my master said, "Wow, that one was especially wince-worthy." And then he and the journeyman in the shop both immediately agreed that Winceworthy sounded like a servant's surname, so they started calling me that or Wince for short. They spent weeks trying to think of what the first name would be until finally they settled on Perseverance, or Percy for short.
So what I'm saying is Percy Winceworthy is my servantsona.
Every year, Trans Day of Remembrance memorializes the trans people we've lost. Traditionally, TDOR focused on those actively murdered by cisgender people. However, it has since expanded to mourn the many ways trans people die (which is often slow death through economic austerity, mental health issues driven by our anti-trans culture, and other "passive" means of killing). I want to remember three acquaintances who passed this past year: Meg Kridli, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, and Deniz Çakır.
Meg was a friend, collaborator, and powerhouse Palestinian trans youth organizer. I met her in 2023 when she invited me to speak at her university. She organized with many groups between her college genders and sexualities club and an international social justice publication - all of which she worked on before the age of 18! She had so much to look forward to with community organizing and beginning her PhD in computer science. I still think about her often.
Miss Major was a trans icon and mentor to countless young trans women. I first met Major during a conference when I was a teenager in Southern California. We've met and I've grown from her wisdom many times since then. Her outgoing humor, courage, and kindness are still unmatched.
I met Deniz a few times over the years, but their recent passing has had a huge impact on our community. We first met shortly after I moved to New York and they immediately left a lasting impression. Their outspoken advocacy for trans women of color, Palestine, and queer liberation cannot be forgotten.

I saw your artwork for your OC, Andi Zamani, and the art is awesome, I literally thought about it this whole day! I love love love the expression, the way text is implemented and overall composition, it's so full of desperation 🙏. And character design is very stylish from what is shown too! :D

i am so glad you liked that piece! it was very experimental lol, it was my way of trying to convey how those kinds of violating traumatic events feel etched into you. you can feel them crawling under your skin, and you realize that you will never escape what they did to you.
andi as a character very much revolves around that theme. the question of "what is a person's point of no return? where is the point, exactly, at which What Happened To Them Is Forever?"
lore + rant on disability rights below the cut otherwise this becomes untenably long lmao. if it helps explain any of the clusterfuck, aer backstory is a result of me giving my character memory loss & letting my storyteller fill it in however she wanted. my storyteller also happens to be insane. for something maybe a little more... organized? abbreviated? here's their artfight! cw for discussion of ableism.
to hear the union tell it, andi was born to be a technocrat. ae displayed insatiable curiosity and a brilliant mind from a young age; a child born imagining what might lie beyond the stars and thinking up ways to reach them. andi was also born with a disability. to hear the union tell it, aer genius was inhibited only by the """failures""" of aer body. fortunately, the Enlightened Science TM of the technocracy saved them from a life doomed to obscurity and dependence by giving them the ability to walk again. ae dove headfirst into their new life as AND-10224-M31, a void engineer researcher stationed out in the far reaches of deep space. when they saw the true face of the technocracy, the "dirty side of the coin" as the M20 book puts it, however, their faith shattered. so off ae went for some Processing. this cycle repeated, over and over again. if the union had their way, it wouldn't have ended until there was nothing of them left.
in reality, aer story is much, much more complicated. they were born in the 13th century and grew up to be a genius inventor, spearheading astronomy and technology that no one thought should be possible. andi was also born with a disability - and a whole ship's crew of family who helped them build the tech ae needed to go on adventures of aer own. they trailblazed theories of heliocentrism, engineering, and astrophysics, and nearly lived to see the order of reason's founding. however, in the time and place that ae lived, others had a lot of opinions about what andi could or should be able to achieve. thus, they lived a very accomplished but lonely life. ae hoped to travel to distant galaxies, in hopes that ae might find somewhere they belonged.
through a complicated and messy sequence of events that can really only be accomplished by a technomancer with 5 dots in the time sphere and a healthy disregard for their own safety, andi ended up getting shot through time all the way to the present day. ae were shortly captured by the technocratic union, who planned to use all of the greatest technocratic minds throughout history to win the ascension war. when andi was absolutely horrified to see what the order of reason had become, however, the union had to use more... persuasive measures.
however, in yet another series of unhinged bullshit happenings involving a cigar-smoking furby, an eldritch horror, and an 80s teenager crawling in the vents of their voidcraft, andi was able to escape the union's clutches. the good news is that they remembered everything! the bad news is that they remembered... everything. also, the world is ending, so good luck processing all that room 101 trauma!
when i was making andi, i wanted to dig into the way that the technocracy seems to perfectly align with this one particularly insidious view of disability: the way that scientific hegemony dictates that we are sick and broken, and their financiers sell us the cure. while every disabled person faces this in one form or another, i was particularly drawing on the inspiration porn that constantly pressures physically disabled people to conform. those headlines about allegedly "heartwarming" stories about wheelchair users forcing themselves to walk for wedding or graduation, or that highlight billions of dollars being poured into hyperfuturistic bionic arms instead of making one-handed technology more accessible.
this view of disability in which it is an Individual Failing to be fixed rather than a complex part of social identity. interventions are created not to meet disabled people's actual needs, but rather to make them seem more "normal".
the union is that exact blend of hyperfuturistic tech combined with the profit motive, both of which are solely oriented towards one thing: Control. and this is pretty textual in my opinion between the progenitors and the iterators. as for my personal opinions on that shit, this article sums it up pretty well.
