I hope one day we talk about how similar Astrid and Toothless are, I can even say their character arcs in the first movie are kinda the same.

Two distrustful, proud beings who reject the idea of letting their guard down and showing weakness. They built up their walls and push anyone who tried to break through them.

The difference is that while Astrid had comunity and therefore a duty to protect her people, Toothless was independent and relied on no one but himself.

They are both rejectful at Hiccup at first, both tried to get rid of him and avoid every interaction because of their own avoidant nature and ego, always prioritizing their own independence and reputation, Astrid during dragon training, trying to protect her spot as the best of the class in order to become an official viking warrior and Toothless when Hiccup gave him his prosthetic tail and tried to get rid of him, trying to put an end to their temporal alliance to go back to being feared.

Yet it was Hiccup's audacity, insistence and worldview that ultimately softened them and let them be the children they really were all the time.

Both had to realize that there was more in life that being what they thought they had to be in order to survive.

In just the past two months, Sony has:

Said the PS6 will be more than $1000 at launch

Announced the end of all physical PS game releases

While simultaneously announcing the end of two of their console game stores — ensuring multiple games will die forever

Declared that they are wholly dedicated to (A) leveraging A.I. when making games and (B) creating live-service games above all other game types

Announced that if you bought any movies through their PlayStation Store, over 550 of them will soon be deleted from all users' libraries — with no restitution offered of any kind

Gamers, it is time — to paraphrase Robert Vann — to turn Sony's picture to the wall. Any one of these insults would be bad, and taken alone? Maybe it could be swallowed. But this is an ongoing campaign of disdain towards customers, with each declaration worse than the last.

PlayStation does not deserve your patronage any longer. The PS6 must fail. Leave them behind.

I've been having thoughts about the dragon riders while I'm stuck in bed from cramps so health related hcs be upon ye:

- tuffnut has poor vision in his right eye which is why he rides belch so that his blind spot is protected by ruff, and ruff often unconsciously stands next to his right side

- since going blind, astrid's night vision has worsened which causes her to trip more leading to her waking up with new bruises

- snotlout has lightning scars from being struck 15 times

- fishlegs has scoliosis

- hiccup has cts

- the twins voices are fried from breathing in gas all the time

- ruffnut has eczema

- all the riders are covered in scars from either sparring, the twins' pranks, or from battle

- in general I think each of the riders know basic first aid given their circumstances but

- the twins mother is a healer who taught them medicine and first aid

- fishlegs actually can't stomach gore and bad wounds as much, so ruff n tuff are often the ones to stitch up deep cuts

- snotlout too since he'd have steady hands from sewing

- fishlegs is better at preparing medicines, and his garden is full of medicinal herbs

- both heather and dagur are the best at dealing with field injuries from their time spent alone

- when it comes to sickness, Astrid low key panics and is restless when the riders are ill or injured cause she hates feeling helpless

- she def worries for the others which is ironic considering she doesn't like showing her pain to the riders and would downplay her own injuries or illness (*scourge of Odin who*)

- hiccup was a sickly child and now when he gets sick, even if the fever is gone he'll have symptoms for weeks after

- like he'd have a lingering cough and sore throat that makes his voice husky (which astrid likes to listen to)

- the twins don't get sick often but when they do its baaaad like it's the only time they're quiet and not pranking the others

- snotlout cries when he's sick cause he hates feeling miserable

- fishlegs is the least likely to get sick and generally takes good care of his health

- heather pretends to dislike being taken care of but loves being fretted over, especially by her brother

- when they get their periods, ruffnut has the worst of the 3 girls

- like I'm talking asshole cramps, nausea, stomach/back pain

- the only pro is that she guilt trips the boys into doing things for her

- though tuff is willing to help since he doesnt like watching his sister suffer

- astrid has normal pain that lasts a day or two, but gets mood swings and hot flashes from pms

- heather has the vibes of someone who doesn't get period cramps and has 3 day periods but she gets pmdd

- hiccup let's the girls take the day off during their periods, snotlout tried complaining once but was jumped by ruff and astrid

I'm serious. Please write it. If you need a sign to start, continue, or whatever is inbetween, this is it. Go do it.

I spent the past couple weeks indulging myself in some BookTok recommendations. While some were indeed good (Kings of Sin, my beloved), some were just...I don't need to finish my sentence there.

I DNF'd some books for the first time since I read Lord of the Flies (sorry Golding, you put me to sleep with your descriptions) and I powered through others in hopes that they would eventually get better. The general consensus I ended up getting was that I could not understand for the fucking life of me how these books got published. The writing in some of them was no better than that of a 2010s teen writing Maximum Ride fic on Wattpad for the first time, with the characterization abysmal enough to match.

I don't want to knock any specific author or book here, because I will concede one thing: they finished their books. They got them published. They're successful. For that, I commend them, because I'm still on my way there myself and I can't take that away from them. Jolly good show.

But that brings me to my point: if they can do it, YOU absolutely can do it too.

If some of these Amazon and NYT bestsellers can have prose on a Wattpad level with characters that have enough poorly-written cognitive dissonance to make Deadpool or Walter White jealous, your fleshed out, deeply intuitive, and remarkably creative epic can sit right alongside them no problem. Whether you're writing the next GoT or a romantic slice-of-life, there is a not a goddamn thing on this planet stopping you from rolling up with the big dogs.

If these guys can do it, so can you.

So, stop telling yourself you can't. Stop letting other people tell you you can't. Stop comparing yourself to these authors who, respectfully and bluntly, can't write for shit (or at least need to fire their fucking editors, good lord).

WRITE YOUR DAMN BOOK. PLEASE. WE NEED IT.

There is a lot of discussion in the fandom about Hiccup’s life after httyd 2. There are a lot of fanfictions in the fandom about how difficult it is to survive the loss of a father while being a tribal chief. And that’s fine! But why do we talk so little about what path Astrid went through after the second part?

Stoick and Valka’s dream came true – they found a daughter in the person of their son’s fiancee. But Astrid Hofferson was not born into a Chieftain’s family and was not raised as the heir to the throne. Despite the status of the leader of the gang, which she shares with Hiccup, Astrid does not understand all the difficulties of managing the village.

Yes, Astrid was devoted to Stoick as a chief and admired him endlessly, but she did not see how Stoick collapsed into his armchair by the fireplace. She did not see how Stoick applied pieces of ice to his inflamed head and, hunched over, looked wearily into the fire. Astrid didn’t see the tears in his eyes. Hiccup saw it. Stoic never gave up in front of his people, so Astrid, like other Vikings of Berk, saw only one (1), rather superficial side of the coin.

“TO MAKE YOU CHIEF! Oh, my gods! Hiccup, that’s amazing!”

“Well, it’s a lot of responsibility”

“I mean, chief. What an honor”

But Hiccup becomes the chief, and Astrid begins to realize that something is going wrong. She is still puffed up with pride when her fiance leads the tribe forward. She sees how Hiccup finds and applies innovative solutions that his father would never have thought of, and becomes increasingly convinced that Hiccup is ideal for this position. But…

The encouraging smile he gives the Vikings does not touch his eyes. His gaze is clouded by a tart tension. Hiccup never found himself. Hiccup misses his father. Hiccup does not have time to cope with all his duties. Hiccup tolerates the distrust of Vikings from other tribes. Hiccup gets tired of the moral pressure and daily work. Hiccup closes in on himself. And, as one of the closest, Astrid sees it.

She used to be unhappy when Hiccup and Toothless ran away together, preferring flights and research to duty to the tribe. Now Astrid watches Hiccup write scroll after scroll, and finds herself almost wishing he would run away. He needs rest.

Astrid no longer glows with pride when Hiccup gives her part of his duties - she herself asks him about it because she wants to lighten his burden. Astrid was one of the strongest Vikings of Berk and was very proud of it, but she is beginning to realize that the weight that Hiccup carries on his shoulders, only he can bear.

Astrid looks up at the monument of Stoick the Vast. He ran the tribe alone, coped with the loss of his wife alone, and raised his son alone. Astrid is amazed by Stoick’s steadfastness, but she understands that she does not want the same fate for Hiccup.
