She knew she was missing something - and it wasn’t the notebook Allan had brought from home. Proudfoot had said something about inspections. Something about inspections being done on the intern office. On the five interns in the Law Enforcement Department. The five interns including her. Amelia Bones - the dead girl with the younger brother among all the classified files. It was safe to say that if she wasn’t dead by the end of the day, she’d most likely shoot herself (muggle-style; an Unforgivable would be too easy) out of shame. Keep it cool, Bones, she coached, folding a piece of stray brow hair behind her ear.
I am, sir. Better to admit the fault rather than cover it up. That wouldn’t do her any good - well, her entire situation wasn’t doing the petite intern anything, but she’d have to work with it. Amelia turned to face the source of the keen, slick (if a bit slimy) voice: none other than Mr. Lucius Malfoy. He was…handsome, yet prejudiced. Not to mention he reeked of injustice. This is my brother, sir. Allan Bones. Think up something quick, Amelia - use that brain. You’re not going anywhere in the business if you don’t learn how to improvise. He’s with me today. Usually our p-she stumbled over the first syllable of the word. It’ll take a little longer to finally get over the shock of their dead bodies, strewn neatly on the parlor floor-parents would take care of him, but…as you might know, they passed in the beginning of the summer.
Merlin, Amelia breathed, biting her lip and avoiding Lucius’ eyes. My brother is usually with one of our friend’s parents, but they cancelled on us on short notice.
Passing over the hurdle, Amelia released a small breath. Would it be all right, sir, if he were to stay at my desk or in the kitchen until I could find someone to look after him?
When Allan heard the older mans voice, he knew it was something good. Well…this wasn’t going to be fun or go well for anyone right now. Allan shifted slightly behind Amelia, trying to hide himself, make himself smaller and less than a target than before. Of course today was going to be the day there was an inspection. It seemed like those kind of things happened to Allan now. He was going to get his sister in trouble with someone who looked rather scary actually.
When Amelia started to say that he was usually with their parents, he looked down rather sad, biting his lip. He was trying to pay the part but at the same time, he really wasn’t. Amelia knew he hated hearing that, or he thought she did but right now wasn’t really the time to play around with that. It didn’t matter, the only thing that mattered was Amelia not getting in trouble with this guy.
Nodding his head in response to the intern, Lucius again felt bored. He swished his quill on a pad of parchment as Amelia Bones finished jabbering and sighed. She was certainly a competent speaker. In such a circumstance, the petite witch held up well and maintained confidence. She may go far. As for the timid, awkward boy, her brother, there was little to say. Look... I don't believe underage siblings necessarily have a place here at the Ministry. This is important work you're interning in, yes? He glanced at the younger Bones, raising an eyebrow. Wondering how their parents died; Lucius tried to silently recall an article he read, but to no avail. Anyway, a young man like this shouldn't require constant supervision from his elders. Your brother looks old enough to stay at home on his own. Or is it that he desires to intern here too? Now see Miss Bones, I believe we may have a place for a strapping young assistant.
He pondered. A personal servant for the day memos to various offices would be useful. But Lucius hated the thought of the boy eavesdropping on hushed conversations or, slipping notes and letters from cloaks or perhaps even wearing those substandard Ministry robes. He has permission to stay with you today; however, Miss Bones you should stay overtime this evening. You are to collect paperwork from the other interns and compile a report of the day's proceedings as well as complete a performance evaluation of each of your fellow interns. This includes a self evaluation. Your brother may as well assist. Lucius' lips curled to a smirk. I think that should be it... Shall I summon your elder brother too? A lovely little Bones family reunion should be marvellous...
