This is so true, and one of the reasons I think our educational system may struggle so much in servicing the special needs population. If you start from the perspective that a child “can’t” do something instead of starting from a perspective of exploration, how will you really know what a child can and cannot do!? I have found over the years now that standardized “evaluations” are EXTREMELY unreliable and should not be used as the sole source of assessment for your child. All it does is isolate based on deficits. Expose your child to TONS of stuff with “neurotypical” children as much as you can to discover your child’s interests before they are a teen. If I could do anything over again, it would be that. I would have ignored the “evaluations” and done things COMPLETELY different.
