Some people discover their passion early on, while others find it later in life. For my uncle, Regor Martinez, weightlifting wasn’t something he dreamed as a child. His passion grew unexpectedly when he first set foot in a gym back in 2019. What started as a simple way to stay fit soon found himself drawn to the adrenaline, the challenge, and the discipline that weightlifting has.
Over time, Regor dedicated himself to intense training, pouring his energy into every lift, every rep, and every workout. His hard work paid off when, in 2022, he competed in his first major event and claimed 1st place at the Southern Philippines Powerlifting Championship. This victory marked the beginning of even more accomplishments, and earned medals and trophies. He also became part of the Ormoc Powerlifting Team, where his dedication to the sport was recognized with a certificate of appreciation.
When I interviewed Regor, I asked if he was still active in the sport. His response reflected the unwavering passion that drives him: “Yes, I’ve been training, but I haven’t joined any competitions since 2023.” Although life may have temporarily paused his competitive streak, Regor hasn’t let go of his passion. He continues to train, lift, and improve.
For Regor, weightlifting is more than just a sport. And even though he hasn’t competed recently, his journey is far from over. With his unwavering determination, who knows what new milestones he’ll achieve in the future?
