“Sarcasm [is] usually the last resort of people who are timid and chaste of heart, whose souls have been coarsely and impudently invaded; and who, until the last moment, refuse to yield out of pride and are afraid to express their own feelings to you.”
— Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Notes from Underground
“It takes something more than intelligence to act intelligently.”

“Very often among a certain highly intelligent type of people, quite paradoxical ideas will establish themselves. But they have suffered so much in their lives for these ideas, and have paid so high a price for them that it becomes very painful, indeed almost impossible, for them to part with them.”
— Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The House of the Dead
Anaïs Nin, The Diary of Anaïs Nin, 1931–1934
