Dear Taylor,
Iām Suzy and I want to share with you something that is a big part of my life and that you are also a big part of it. When I was High School I wasnāt the most popular and didnāt have to many friends. I had braces, glasses, and didnāt know how to dress and teens called me weird. The only reason guys liked me was because of my body and that made me feel so used. I listened to your music a lot and it got me through a lot of hard times. When it came to prom my senior year, I thought I was actually going to get to go because a guy I really liked told me he would take me but in the end he backed out. I was left feeling like I wasnāt pretty enough or worthy of even going. That I would be laughed at if I went by myself. I decided to stay home, I wish I would have had friends to go with but none of them so calledĀ āfriendsā wanted to go with me. I was very unsure of who I was, until a few years ago. I went to your 1989 Tour and I heard your clean speech and the lines that stuck out to me the most of what you said wasĀ āYou are NOT somebody elseās opinion of you.ā andĀ āYou ARE your own definition of beautiful and worthwhile.ā I knew from that moment, I am who I know I am. That I am beautiful no matter what others say. You gave me hope!! Now I am stronger, more confident, and feel beautiful!! I decided that since this year is my 25th Birthday, I want to have a party that is Prom themed!! That this will be the prom I have always dreamed of, the one I didnāt go to because I was afraid to. But now I am fearless!! I know this is kind of last minute and I know you are a very busy person but I would love to invite you to my 25th Birthday Prom!!! There will be lots of food, music, and dancing!!! A place where I am free to be myself, a place where love will be!!! My Birthday Party will be on June 24th, 2017!!! Would you, @taylorswift be my guest of honor at my birthday prom??? It would be a way of thanking you for all you have done for me and to have you at my party celebrating who I am now, it would mean so much to me!! I know it is such short notice but it would mean the world!!! I canāt say how incredible you are and how you have changed my life with your kind and loving words!!! I love you, Tay Ā :)
Love,Ā
Suzy W

WHOOPS. @taylorswift
these are a few, if not all of the times taylor swift has spoken about feminism on film since 1989 was released. her definition is basic, but itās consistent, and she acknowledges that identifying as a feminist is a new thing for her but that she wishes she had been educated about what it means to be a feminist earlier on in her life. she says itās important for ALL girls/women to know that it simply means asking for equality. i struggle to see what sheās done wrong here aside from provide a basic definition and not expand upon it. i also struggle to see where she has used it toĀ āsell albumsā in any of these examples.Ā
here are some other quotes from 2014, basically the only period in time she has spoken about itā¦because she was asked.
this is a quote from an interview with the guardian
āAs a teenager, I didnāt understand that saying youāre a feminist is just saying that you hope women and men will have equal rights and equal opportunities. What it seemed to me, the way it was phrased in culture, society, was that you hate men. And now, I think a lot of girls have had a feminist awakening because they understand what the word means. For so long itās been made to seem like something where youād picket against the opposite sex, whereas itās not about that at all. Becoming friends with Lena ā without her preaching to me, but just seeing why she believes what she believes, why she says what she says, why she stands for what she stands for ā has made me realise that Iāve been taking a feminist stance without actually saying so.ā
i know yāall donāt like lena dunham but i donāt think what sheās saying here is particularly offensive or damaging. itās basic but not wrong.Ā
this is a quote from cosmopolitan
āMy girlfriends and I talk a lot about feminism and the inequality between the way men and women are talked about. The kind of things we say are: āWhy is it mischievous, fun and sexy if a guy has a string of lovers that heās cast aside, loved and left? Yet if a woman dates three or four people in an eight-year period she is a serial dater and it gives some 12-year-old the idea to call her a slut on the internet?ā Itās not the same for boys, it just isnāt and thatās a fact.ā
i donāt think this is a great quote but i donāt think thereās anything wrong with it either? sheās identifying how women are treated differently to men by mainstream media and the repercussions that can have for how woman are viewed by younger generations.Ā
itās obvious that on the occasions that she has spoken about feminism it has either been in relation to her own experiences with the way the media portrays her songwriting and personal life, or the way the media portrays women in general. she can obviously expand upon her understanding, iām not saying itās perfect but what sheās saying here is not wrong or harmful and i donāt think she should be persecuted for not doing enough.Ā and aside from her āfeudā with nicki minaj, which was followed by an extended and supposedly educational phone call with nicki herself she hasnāt really done anything that contradicts what sheās said about feminism.
