(Cholesterol is the molecular building block of the hormoens that power reproduction in both squirrels and humans.) Drug-laced baits are the latest, humane approach to controlling the exploding population of gray squirrels in the United States. Similar rodent contraception efforts may be coming to a location near you in 2013. The DiazaCon contraceptive coating used on squirrel treats is not to be confused with Diazanon used to control fire ant infestations.

Robert M. Timm, author of this article, suggests that homeowners stay on the lookout for "smudges" left by mice as they climb on rafters, beams, walls, and pipes. He has one of the better descriptions of the peculiarly musky odor of the housemouse, and makes the only practical suggestion I've ever seen for conducting your own count of house mice to determine the extent of your rodent infestation.

If you use poisons, however, remember that you should never put them out in any area where there is traffic from people and pets, and that mice won't necessarily die, and decay, where they are easy to remove.

If you happen to live in Seattle, you won't mind many guides more useful than this guide to getting rid of rats published by King County (the Washington state county where Seattle is located). But there are a couple of great ideas in this article that are applicable anywhere. If you find a rat in your toilet, flush it! That seems obvious but it's pretty hard to remember if you actually do find a rat swimming up into the commode bowl. And if you are going to kill those rascally rats, use a trap. Don't use poisons, fumigants, flame throwers, hand held missle launchers, or dynamite. A rat trap, monitored daily, is always best.
