For years, Ziphrane Mahariel walked the Beyond comfortably at night, bending and twisting it gently to suit her whims. The Beyond had welcomed her, embraced her, answered her whims easily, no matter how childish they might have been. And at times, they had been childish. For years, she was safe, under the supervision of Varen and Ulielas, spirits of Hope and Compassion. Her dreams have been different since the mirror, even worse since the Joining. Her command over the Beyond is overruled, overrun, and overwhelmed—the great beast known as the Archdemon usually claims her nights now. She closes her eyes, and where she would normally open her mind to her second home, now she most often opens it to the beast's eyes. Staring. Watching her. At times, threatening to Call to her. But tonight, as her mind opens, it is not the piercing glare of the Archdemon that greets her. Six blazing eyes of a great wolf meet her instead. His fur wafts off of him like wisps of smoke, and he towers over her, cutting an imposing figure. Very rarely has Ziphrane been afraid in the Beyond, but tonight she would say dread fills her. Her people tell stories of a great wolf who stalks the Beyond, who hunts alone. She has never given them much weight, but as her head tilts with her effort to identify the Spirit who stands before her, she cannot identify it as Fear. She can hardly identify it at all. She finds she has to push herself to her feet, but once she does, her back straightens, and she regards the wolf... curiously. "Who are you?" asks the Dreamer, simply. — @fatesown

Blights had a way about them— sending ripples with each instance that they struck the Fade and washed death into the waters of the world. Shredded thin, the Veil would waver and he would be left to watch as spirits grasped at their newfound freedom only to be reshaped by thoughtless hands and his own failures. All the while, the Black City as it had come to be known writhed against its confines.

As with many dreamers he would catch glimpses of corners of the Fade touched by a mind open enough to truly see what laid before it. Hear whispers of conversations with a young mage carried by spirits and stumble upon wisps that would build themselves from the fragments of her left behind. It was inevitable for her to reach too far. For fate, as one would have it, to find its cruel need to strike. But even in the shattered remains of a mirror sat opportunity.

Teeth and claw carved a path through Urthemiel's will and parted it around Ziphrane until they both stood in the quiet center. The Archdemon may have had the Wardens' minds but the land of dreams was his, a land he'd walked far longer in a maze he'd hewn the edges of from its wall's inception. Still, the effort to do so in the throes of a Blight had been ... greater ... than he'd hoped. Each heaved breath through his wet nose sent plumes of dust dancing at their feet.

"That all depends on who you ask," Solas spoke in words that permeated the space with unopened mouth. Each eye fell to the remnants of hope and compassion left on her like fingerprints on glass, somehow unmarred in spite of their station. "My name is a thing that has its shape changed with each and every tongue it finds itself passed from."

The wisps clinging to the space around his form jostled as large paws slid before him in a stretch and he shook away the excess magic he'd taken hold of in his efforts. "Though, I have heard tales of you. You've made quite a name for yourself."

i love loghain so much but he is truly my top guy who sucks. that is a key part of him. i know i talk about him from the perspective of his trauma regarding the orlesian occupation to provide context to his behaviors and his genuine love for the people close to him but it does not change that he's. awful. he has his own wants and loves and fears but it does not change the fact that he's manipulative with a tendency to be cruel especially to those with lower societal standings than him or just to get what he wants (even toward people he loves).

i try to give solas more grace because i'm tired of the corrupt/evil abolitionist trope that he gets thrown into but (to me) loghain doesn't fit that because he's not an abolitionist. loghain doesn't actively try/want to dismantle the systems in place, he just doesn't want orlais to be in control of them because he can still benefit from them where solas cannot. subconsciously or not he's content with protecting the 'me and mine' whereas solas doesn't want anyone to suffer. it's not until he potentially becomes a warden that he has the chance to unpack any of that because he's gets thrown down to the same level as those around him.

stabbing as a metaphor for penetration is great but when are we going to talk about pressing down on where someone is wounded to disarm them or just to be cruel while fighting. does nobody else care about the perverse intimacy of knowing exactly where to touch to overpower someone. the grotesque vulnerability of it. especially if you're the one who wounded them in the first place.

Not "The Character did nothing wrong" or "The Character is irredeemably awful" but a secret third thing: The Character may display moments of deep love & compassion, may even have a strong sense of ethics, and may also be capable of brutal cruelty that is irreconcilable with those traits. The constant tension between the different sides of The Character's nature is exactly what makes them compelling, and attempting to reduce them down to simply "a terrible person" or "innocent & misunderstood" is missing the point of the questions a media with nuanced characters is asking you to consider
