Twelfth Night

January 5th/6th isn’t a big holiday in mainstream American culture, but it’s one of my favorites. It has many names: Twelfth Night, Well of Souls, Epiphany, King’s Day. You can observe it many ways, depending on what tradition you’re in. Maybe you don’t take your Christmas decorations down until Epiphany. Perhaps you wassail the apple orchard to banish evil spirits and encourage a bountiful harvest. Maybe you eat cake and crown a Queen of Feasts and Lord of Misrule. Or maybe you pray and meditate, to see what advice the Divine has for you for the coming year.

Whatever you’re doing this weekend, may you have Light and gratitude, insight and wisdom, and plenty of merriment.

Sometimes, if I can’t think of the right words for a prayer, or don’t know what I need, or my emotions are too big to articulate, I’ll just chant, “Highest good, highest good, highest good,” and trust that my guides and the Divine can take it from there.

“She passed down less trauma to her children than her parents did to her.”

This sentence stuck out to me in a conversation with a friend. If we can do this, if our families can do this, aren’t we basically succeeding?

Today’s Prayer

Help me to remember that my anxiety is a tool. I can disidentify from my anxiety. I have anxiety, but I am not my anxiety. My anxiety is an opportunity to learn and grow.

There is always someone praying.

There is always someone loving.

There is always someone being kind.

There is always someone advocating.

There is always someone speaking truth.

There is always someone calling Light.

There is always someone, somewhere, supporting us--even when we feel alone, even when it all seems hopeless, even when we can’t see the light through the darkness.

There is someone--many someones--holding the space, holding us up, shining compassion, shining light. No matter how bad it may seem.

We are here. We see you. We know you are going to make it through. We are holding you up. We love you.

We are all over the world. We are a net of compassion surrounding the earth.

I know because I have been in the darkness. I have thought I was all alone. And when I came out the other side, I realized others had been there holding the space and aiding me and calling Light to me when I could not, though I could not sense it. I could not believe it.

We are here. And we are all going to make it through together.
