It is here, in the shade, that a hidden world prepares to unveil itself. This is the realm of the fungi, a delicate architecture that blooms when the summer light has finally faded.

Fire, Art and Battles at Kenilworth

Arriving at Kenilworth Castle, I was genuinely looking forward to a day steeped in medieval grandeur. Images of jousting knights and thundering hooves had fuelled my anticipation, and I imagined the kind of pageantry on offer at Warwick and elsewhere. Our English Heritage membership cards were at the ready, and spirits were high.

Grab a bit of grass, find a nice spot. It's a beautiful August day here in the Shugborough walled garden. The sun is warm, the air smells of something vaguely earthy, and I’ve been stood here, pretending to be a profound observer of nature, but mostly just getting distracted by the sheer chaos of it all.

Bakewell sometimes seems a town built on a dessert. The Bakewell Pudding originated here back in the 1800s and it has never gone away. 

Every bakery and cafe advertises them and there is hardly a street where they are not sold. It seems there’s money in culinary mistakes.  

At this stage you may be asking two questions

Ding, Ding All Aboard

The clue is in the name. Black Country LIVING Museum. Life and movement make this museum stand out. Hands on exhibits, costumed characters but, conspicuously, transport, the buses roaring around the streets, even the regular pony and trap rattling along.

This is not a transport museum, but it seems to have stepped back from its most evocative and green transportation.  

It’s such a shame that the resident trolleybuses haven’t run for months and there is no current estimate of when the trams will be rattling through the museum once more.

Volunteers tell me they are ‘not a priority’ for the management. I suggest they should be as the place isn’t as interesting or exciting without them.
