July 26 - Tick Tock Diner

“Yeah…” Jenny gave Peter a disbelieving look at his question. “If I’d seen Claire, Peter, I would have tried to get her out, but I didn’t. Unfortunately. She’s either at a different location int he city or was in another part of the place I didn’t get to see.” She sighed and nodded in agreement at his words. “Yeah, we’re fucked, and not the good kind either.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know.” Peter replied quickly, he hadn’t meant to come off as accusatory, stress just made it hard for him to moderate his tone. But if Claire wasn’t there, that meant she could still be anywhere. And there could be any number of these mysterious new sites around the city, even around the country. “You’d think we’ve be used to it by now.” He sighed. “We need to get some info. If you can, go back to the UN tomorrow and see what you can find. Not about that site, but about potential others. She could be right under our noses and we wouldn’t know. Take any agents you think could help.”

“Honestly, I wouldn’t expect anything less from you. She’s your family and if the others can’t understand, or at least sympathize with that, then screw ‘em.” She muttered, pressing her lips into a line and smirking at him. “They need to accept that fact that she’s one of us, whether or not our mess is partly her fault, because the truth is, we were probably heading this direction anyway and if it weren’t her, it would have been someone else.”

Shay shrugged and took another swig of her drink before looking at the time and standing up. “I should probably get going, now that I think about it. Maybe I can round up a few Rogues to start checking the sites with. If anything, we can clear them and take back what’s ours to expand the base. And hey, maybe I can kill a few people in the process. It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve shot someone.”

Peter nodded in agreement whilst finishing his last drink. At least Shay understood. He knew that the fight was more important than his own family, but if he became completely detached from the life he used to have, what exactly was he fighting for? 

Watching her leave, Peter stayed seated and played with his glass for a while before ordering another. He appreciated Shay’s willingness to help, and a part of him knew that he should be out there right now as well. But he needed sleep, and he really needed to find a way to bring his brain back down to reality. He felt as though he’d been in a different world ever since the protest, and it wasn’t helping him find Claire. 

So after he finished his drink he headed  home, and though his sleep wasn’t peaceful, it was at least sleep.

She waited a few short minutes to see what his thoughts were about the government using their old bases. when he agreed, Shay nodded small, a satisfied smile pulling at her lips. 

“Will do, boss.” She replied, pulling her phone out and sending a few quick text messaged to some of the members. When Shay finished, she pocketed her phone and took a long swig of her new drink. “How long do you think it’ll take us to find her?”

“Good.” Peter let Shay go ahead and contact the people she could, hoping one of them would come up with something. He made a mental note to contact Jenny in the morning and make sure she was also checking these places out. 

At he question, Peter could only shrug. He wanted to be optimistic, to say they’d get her back home within the week, but there just wasn’t much of an optimist left in him anymore. “I don’t know. But we’re going to turn this city over looking for her. This is our prime objective right now.” Though he hated it, and he knew it would only serve to drive the Rouges who didn’t like her further away, Peter couldn’t focus on anything until he knew she was safe.

Jenny smirked back at him, eyes rolling in amusement. “I wasn’t sure you still knew how to joke around.” She muttered, shaking her head a little. At his question, Jenny nodded small. 

“Actually, I did get behind the door and you won’t like what I found at all.” She let out a small sigh and licked her lips, glancing away for a minute. “There were some regular rooms and storage closets and the usual, but also cells, Peter. Just like the ones Primatech used to use for holding.” Jenny paused, letting that sink in a little. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Claire was in there, but at the same time, I don’t think the United Nations would be that stupid. Unless they have no idea, though I dout that.”

“Shit.” Peter let out a long sigh, and put his head right back in his hands. It wasn’t surprising that they had something like this up their sleeves, but they should have been able to see this sort of thing coming. “Shiiiit. Okay, you didn’t see Claire there, right? But that just means they probably have other sites around the city. Probably near places like the UN... I don’t know where that leaves us other than double-y screwed but still.”

“Well, then maybe that just means you should stop  listening to what other people are telling you to do and start trusting your gut instead.” Jenny replied, raising an eyebrow at him challengingly. She hesitated a minute and sighed heavily when Peter asked if she had anything.

“I may or may not have snuck into the United Nations building and found a few doors that are more secure than the Preidents office…”

“As deal, I will make that the last bit of advice I take.” He said with a slight smirk. Things were bleak, but that didn’t mean his sense of humour was completely gone. He couldn’t say that he had all the best ideas, and for a long time he was the king of poor choices, but perhaps age was refining him - he could see the bad choices before they were made, and could only sit back and let them happen most of the time nowadays. 

“You didn’t happen to get behind the doors, did you?”

Shay snorted in laughter at his comment. “Well, thanks for being honest, Peter. At least we know Claire’s nowhere near a bad as I am.” She teased, taking a sip of her new drink. “And I think we might be, Peter. Or at least, if we try to quit drinking when all of this is over, we’ll be fucked.” They’d all been drinking so much over the past few years it was a wonder none of them had alcohol poisoning yet.

At his questions, Shay shook her head in response. “I don’t have a damn clue. Although–” She paused, licking her lips in thought. “I wouldn’t be surprised if they were using some of our old sites. Since we’re technically not keeping tabs on those, it would be pretty damn smart.”

Peter let out a long sigh. Shay was right. There were empty sites just lying around decked out perfectly for this sort of thing. And they had no security whatsoever - it was like they were asking for it. 

“Okay, we need to get people to check those places first thing tomorrow. Anyone invisible or who can avoid tracking would be best, just in case they are there. Send anyone not working on anything vital to keep their ears to the ground, someone has to know something.”

“You know, Peter, you’re more than welcome to say ‘I told you so’. I won’t be upset. And next time I give you advice, feel free to ignore every word I say.” She was, of course, refering to Claire being taken last weekend, but part of Jenny didn’t want to apologize. He’d made his own decision.

“I feel like I say that too often these days.” Peter sighed, lifting his weary head from the table, looking at Jenny with tired eyes. He just wanted to find Claire and get her out of whatever hell they were putting her through. After what she’d told him of Henry’s experiences, he had to assume the worst. “Just tell me you have something.”

Shay snorted at Peter. “You know damn well that she is probably more stubborn than me. Maybe. Though I’m probably one of the most stubborn people ever.” She snickered at him and shook her head with a sigh before ordering another drink. “And, as a side note, I think when this war is over, we’ll all have to start going to AA meetings.”

His words about Alex had her nodding again, but she still wasn’t quite convinced. “I know that, but it’s just so…Robert of him.” She muttered, her tone disgusted at Robert’s very name. “Alex has never done something like this before. At least, not for this long of a period.” Shay shook the thoughts from her head after finishing her drink.

“Anyway. We’re supposed to be talking strategy, Peter. Focus.”

“Oh come of Shay, don’t sell yourself short. You’re at least the most stubborn person in the universe.” He grinned, shaking his head at her AA comment. “I don’t think we’re quite that bad just yet.” He definitely drank too much and slept too little to be considered a well-functioning person, but it was what they needed right now. He was trying to do the work of what should probably be five people. 

“Okay, yes, strategy. Do we have any idea where they could be holding her? Any of their old sites?”

“That’s the difference between you and me, Peter. You still want to save everyone and I’m still willing to kill anyone who gets in my way. Neither of us has really changed over the years, no matter how much we want to, and we’re still so different from each other. Guess the prolonged exposure is really the only answer.” He chuckled dryly and shook his head, not really sure what to say to that. “We keep each other somewhat balanced.”

He nodded at Peter’s words, agreeing that having someone in mind would make it look planned. “Fine, fine. Let’s go find the cheerleader and try not to kill anyone unnecessarily.” His tone sounded a little disappointed, which he was, but Sylar stuck to the plan. For now.

“Gotta keep some differences.” Peter shrugged, internally glad that Sylar still saw that they weren’t exactly the same. It was the one thing keeping him from going completely off the rails, no matter how often over the last five years he’d wanted to; not being like Sylar. 

“Thanks. Feels like we’ve been doing the same thing for year’s now.” He thought out-loud, considering how intertwined their histories were with Claire and each other. Maybe they were doomed to do this forever, or maybe one day thir fight would be fruitfull and they wouldn’t have to anymore. 

“Come on, I think she went this way.”

Shay snorted at Peter and shoot her head a little. “Peter, you know damn well Claire was never going to listen to you. She’s too much of an optimist, always hoping that things are going to get better and what not.” She shrugged and took a sip of her drink when the bartender brought them over a few moments later. “And honestly, I have no fucking clue what okay is anymore. I guess, maybe, alive? I don’t know.”

When he asked about Alex, Shay put her drink down and sighed. “I haven’t heard anything yet. He’s been gone for about a month and it’s driving me crazy, but I know he wouldn’t have disappeared for no reason. I’m just worried that it’s something terrible, except he knows how to kick some ass and can’t miss, so…” She shrugged again and downed the rest of her drink, ordering another one.

“I’ll wait another few days or so and then start looking if I don’t hear anything. I’m really worried about him. It’s not like Alex to just leave without saying anything.”

“I know, but I had to at least try to convince her.” Peter sighed. He knew what Claire was like, and he knew there was no way she’d lay low like he’d suggested, but still he never thought that things would go so wrong so fast. “We just have to find her as soon as possible, I hate to think what they could be doing.” He said, shaking his head. 

As Shay talked about Alex, Peter finished his drink and ordered another. It wasn’t like him to just up and leave at all, and as optimistic as you could want to be, in this day and age, it was easy for the imaginable worst to be the reality. 

“He’ll be alright. You know him, he’s not easily taken down. He’ll have his reasons, you’ll see.” Peter attempted to believe his words. Alex was tough, but his past was so shrouded n mystery, anything could have happened.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if that were actually true.” Shay replied, smirking slightly at him as Peter immediately turned toward the nearest bar. It was a funny thing how they all seemed to become alcoholics since the war started, but then again, it wasn’t called liquid courage for nothing.

“Alright, alright. Sounds good to me.” She muttered, following him towards the door. She didn’t say anything for a minute, but when they finally got some bar seats and ordered their drinks, Shay turned to him again and sighed. “You doing okay?”

After sitting down, Peter immediately rested his head on his hand, not daring to close his eyes incase he fell asleep. “What the hell is okay?” He asked with a wry smile, like it had been so long since anything was even remotely fine that he couldn’t even remember what the word meant any more. “I’ll live, but man, it’s like we pissed off a God or something with how often everything goes wrong.” Peter took his drink and had a mouthful, before turning back to Shay. “My only solace is that when we get Claire back, and we will get Claire back, I’ll get to say I told you so. Gotta hold on to the little things.” 

He’d told her so many times that she had to lay low, but she never listened, she thought he was patronising her. Turns out he’d been right, but he really wished he hadn’t been. And with the blackhole? It was going to take a while to come back from that. 

“Are you alright? Heard anything from Alex yet?”

“Maybe you’re right…but now you’re killing my mood.” She frowned slightly and eyed him from the side. He looked rough. If it weren’t ironic, Shay would have said that Peter looked like he’d been through a war. “You look like hell.”

Shay paused again and sighed heavily. “Want to grab a drink and talk strategy? We can go over how best to deal with some of the shit that happened. Or maybe just grab a drink?”

“Apparently that’s my new ability.” He chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck before frowning at his observation. True, he hadn’t slept since Claire was taken, but she didn’t have to point it out. 

Nodding, Peter already started in the direction of the nearest bar. “Lets start with the drink and work backwards. Strategy comes later.”

“You know, Peter, you take all the fun out of everything. How are we friends?” He was being half serious, but serious nonetheless. They’d started out as enemies, then able to tolerate one another, and now they were friends. Some days it was still strange, though mostly to see Peter far from the boy scout he used to be.

“But fine, I’ll wait. That’ll probably just make it more fun when I don’t have to hold back at all anyway.” Sylar paused a moment and smirked. “Who are you going to attack first?”

“Well I’d rather kill the vibe than an innocent person.” Peter quipped, the side of him mouth twitching into a smirk. “And as for why we’re friends, I guess we can just blame prolonged exposure.” Sylar had been a near constant in his life for so long now, Peter couldn’t really imagine a future without him in it, regardless of how much he might secretly wish for that. 

Peter mused on the question for a minute before simply shrugging. “No one in mind, that might make it look planned.” He knew it was a losing battle, trying to get the Rogues to keep a scrap of the moral high-ground, but so long as there was air in his lungs he was going to keep trying. “I just want to keep an eye on Claire.”

Sylar snorted, though tried to keep from laughing right in Peter’s face. “Do you honestly think this protest is going to remain peaceful? I think we both know it’s not, but hey–” He shrugged, snickering at Peter in mild disappointment. “–I’m willing to wait just to prove you wrong.”

“I think-” Peter sighed, glancing at Sylar out the corner of his eye, “It would be best if we’re not the first ones to break the peace.” What kind of example would they be setting if everything went to hell because of them. “But if shit hits the fan, you do what you want.”

“As much as he needs to go,” Peter sighed, scanning the crowd, ready to act on any sign of aggression. “I think something like that would turn what is supposed to be our peaceful protest into a riot, don’t you think?”
