Horizon Line
Weekends were always boring.
Everyone was away vacationing, or they were home and ignoring Touko for their own completely logical, yet selfish, reasons.
Losers.
So usually on days like these where nobody wanted to hang out or train, she made her way to the Pokemon World Tournament to see what was new, or maybe pick up someone new and neat to chat with; though usually, they were there only to participate in PWT, thus excluding Touko from getting a good conversation with them.
Sitting in the lobby and waiting for something like a conversation to spark, however, was not quite as entertaining as it sounded. Unfortunately for her, the Unova girl didn’t have quite the reputation she thought she had - so she didn’t really have a fanbase, or stupid boys walking up and asking for her autograph or a battle (instead, they asked for sex usually - in which case, she would generally deny the offer). Which meant, of course, that nobody was racing to say hello to her.
So really, she was left to pursue people - not generally her style, but it entertained her on Saturdays.
A little lady popped into the room (almost quite literally, that childlike energy was present all about the girl), and Touko knew she was to be sought out as the first conversational victim.
Coolly, she slid right up out of her seat and nearly slid over to Dawn as the foreigner was signing into the checklist. “Heeeeeeeey, you’re here to register for the tournament, riiiiight?” she asked, being obliviously redundant as she leaned into the counter, facing Dawn as she stretched out, elbows propped up on the counter.
… Shining her famous Touko Smile™ would definitely get the stranger to recognize her, and she knew just how it would play out: after she was identified, Touko would have to accept a desperate request to battle only because she had nothing else better to do! What a sight.
Too bad she wasn’t as reputable as she imagined herself.
“Heeeeeeeey, you’re here to register for the tournament, riiiiight?” A voice called out from behind Dawn. Turning to see the source of the sound, she was met with the sight of a strikingly beautiful brunette -- clearly from Unova, based on the accent, and nearly a foot taller than the tiny Sinnoh girl.
"I certainly am!" Dawn chirped, smiling at the other girl. She finished scrawling her name onto the sheet of paper in front of her and shifted to give the stranger her full attention.
Nothing the brunette's cool demeanor, Dawn decided that perhaps it would be best for her to dial down the enthusiasm a bit -- had she been a bit too bouncy? Oops. -- and instead opted for a more relaxed "Yes, and I'm looking forward to it very much. This is my first time in Unova, and I absolutely had to see what all the fuss was about!"
'Am I rambling again?' Dawn wondered, straightening up just slightly. She was sure she'd seen this girl somewhere before, but she just couldn't seem to place her finger on the time or place.
The brunette's eyes flicked over her, and Dawn suddenly felt as though the girl was sizing her up. For anyone else, this might have been nerve-wracking, but Dawn only interpreted it as a compliment. Perhaps this new girl was looking for a battle? If that was the case, Dawn would give her a battle worth remembering.

Horizon Line
No sooner had Dawn finished yet another trek around Sinnoh -- what did that make? The third one? Fourth? -- did she find herself restless yet again.
The pamphlet had sat on the coffee table for months now: Visit the PWT in beautiful Driftveil City, Unova!, but the lure of adventure and the restlessness of constantly wandering down the same familiar paths had finally proved to be too much. Diving for the tiny paper, she yearned to plan her escape to the distant region posthaste.
The ferry left the following morning, carrying with it the petite, blue-haired girl and her renewed ambitions. Pulling into the port on the southern tip of the city, Dawn trekked down the dock, tugging her suitcase behind her. She'd check into the hotel later, she thought. For now, her focus was on the one and only challenge that she had sought out to conquer.
The lobby of the monolithic building was unlike anything she'd ever seen; impossibly high ceilings, marble floors and mirror-lined hallways. Dawn and her duplicate reflections made their way to the front desk, eyes wide with a renewed vigor. The sight of the other young trainers made her chest swell with excitement as she approached the check-in.
"Hi there! I'm here to register for the tournament."
Turning and facing Dawn running at him, a small smirk appeared on his face.
It had been a while since he had seen Dawn, perhaps months. He had found it a little odd that he had just happened to bump into her at this exact location in the region. "What brings you here?" He adjusted his beret and put down his notes. "I would have figured you’d be spending some more time up at the Resort Area!"
It didn't take long for the girl to fall back into the comfortable pattern of cracking a smile and joshing the professor's assistant.
"Maybe, but I like to come back every now and again. Remember what it was like to be a traveling trainer." She adjusted her hat, which had slipped down over her brows during the jog from the road to the riverbank. Noting that the boy's eyes were still trained on her, she couldn't help herself but to redden. "What in the world, Lucas...?"
With the fresh breeze of a cool morning blowing through the valley, Lucas had an incredibly determined aura going about him. Standing on the edge of the river between Route 205 and the Valley Windworks, he thoroughly searched for strong-looking Water-type Pokémon that could be on the breach of...
The sight of the all-too-familiar beret standing on the dock was just enough to catch Dawn's eye and send her running in his direction.
"Lucas!" The boy shifted from his position. "Lucas, hey! It's been ages! How have you been?"
The distance between the two of them was just wide enough that she couldn't make out his response; opting instead to continue jogging through the vale-like terrain. The breeze picked up around them, warmth from the sun slashed with the cooler mountain air.
"Hey, it's been a while, hasn't it?"
Back to basics.
The midsummer air kicked up around her, lifting the edges of her scarf and the tendrils of her striking cobalt hair.
Standing near the gate to Amity Square, Piplup at her side, Dawn realized that this was the first time she'd been here since her journey, and she couldn't help but to feel a little nostalgic.
Clenching and unclenching her fists, she inhaled and walked through the gate.
"Would you like to take a stroll with your Piplup?" The voice of the woman behind the counter was warm and soft, and Dawn nodded. "I hope you enjoy your time together!" The woman called after her as she walked through the other side of the gate and entered the park.
Everything was exactly as she had left it -- the benched and flowers scattered throughout, the tiny pond, the mass of other trainers strolling with their own Pokémon -- and yet, nothing was the same.
She's seen so much; done so much since the last time she'd been here as a traveling trainer -- which was, unironically, the last time she'd had enough down time to take a casual stroll through the park.
"Oh, what do you have there?" Dawn turned and faced the tiny, blue Pokémon as it held what appeared to be something fluffy out to her. Recognizing it as a fashion accessory, Dawn turned it over in her palm before slipping inside of the Fashion Case in her bag.
"Aw, thanks, Piplup! Alright, let's keep walking!" She beckoned for the tiny creature to follow her. Piplup took a few eager steps towards his trainer before bursting into a run, trailing behind the blue-haired girl.
"Some things change," Dawn thought to herself, smiling at her partner's eagerness. "Others never do."
