Snape had figured that the boy would find our eventually. But why did it have to be sooner rather than later? He wasnt ready. He wasn’t ready to revisit the past. He wasn’t ready to share his pains and regrets. He wasn’t ready to tell Harry how he failed them.
So when much to his surprise, during a test, through a mutually agreed upon questioning, he found the question. He wasn’t ready.
Snape froze and tuned out the soft mutterings and tappings of the remaining test takers in the classroom. He rose and made his way to the cupboard in the corner and made himself to look busy. It wasn’t too out of the norm for him to do something of this likeness.
When Snape returned to the desk, it was with a dryed nose, and hollow eyes. Snape resumed grading Harry- the boy’s test, and answered with a simple “Yes.” He did know his parents. But that was all that he would give up for the moment. Perhaps it was selfish of him, to keep these memories and feelings to himself. But he wasn’t ready. And he didn’t know when he would be.
Harry approached Snape later on after he received his graded work back. In what seemed to be confusion, anger, pain, sorrow, and hurt- the last one made Snape hurt as well- he asked, no, at this point, he was begging,
“Why won’t you tell me about them?”
And Snape for all of his built up cowardace could only answer with,
“It’s not the right time. It is also not something that can simply be shared written down. Come find me sometime later, when neither of us are busy, and you are absolutely sure that you are ready to hear about them, then I will answer.”
Severus left the boy standing in his classroom as he made his way deeper into the dungeons, and wandered aimlessly until his next class.
He didn’t sleep that night.
