City Life Reflected and Masked in Silhouettes By Jasper James
Beijing-based photographer Jasper James has taken up the lens to interpret the chaotic city life by merging them with human shapes.
Inspired by a visit to Tokyo, an economic and thriving hub at the heart of Asia, he has captured the energy and the sheer immensity of the city through his lens. The double exposure photographs take the character and silhouettes of a person,and overlays them with the landscape that has influenced the human subject. Multiple layers, opaque and in various levels of transparency, reveal that there’s a deeper meaning to urban life than it seems and the sombre colors bring down the overwhelming metropolitan landscape James has centred in this series.
A crumb of wisdom he imparts to photographers that want to approach this photography is, “ to keep re-engaging with life in a fresh way to keep motivated to want to make images.“ Having worked and lived in big cities most of his life, James seeks to document that behind the methodical madness throbbing in a big city, there’s a peaceful flow of emotions that often goes unnoticed.
