Observational Comedy
Filipinos derive comedy from various pains that they experience on their society and on their day-to-day life. These experiences can spark a wave of nostalgia as well as the repressed anger towards to society that might spiral out of control. These pains are comedy since most Filipinos collectively experience it while keeping the discourse light-hearted.
Hospitable
Filipinos take pride of being hospitable especially to foreigners. Some ways of hospitality are preparing large amounts of food as if it is a feast, and spending time to chat with the visitors. Filipinos are proud of sharing the beauty of their country and their culture and are happy to have a strong relationship with visitors.
Hardworking
Poverty is always present when discussing about Filipino society. Having to get oneself many jobs to help the household generate money for the sake of survival and also for dignity. Filipinos work more harder as the pandemic took a huge blow on the economy of the nation
Filial Piety
The common denominator of cultures across Asia is being filial. Filial piety is the respect children show to their parents, grandparents, and elder relatives. This is mostly done in helping to take care of the sick and elderly family member. Modern ways of helping parents is (1) taking care of parents; (2) providing financial assistance to parents; and (3) honoring the deceased.
Kapwa (Sense of a Shared Identity)
This is the core of the Filipino psychology in which people have relations with their kapwa (one of us) and hindi kapwa (not one of us). Kapwa being connected, from joining with to being with others. Hindi kapwa is also kapwa but it is about people that you are not close with. Hindi kapwa starts from being civil, then integration and assimilation, to conformity and unity.
Utang na Loob (Sense of Indebtedness)
With the concept of hiya, Filipinos also have a concept of being "indebted" to those people who give them help as a sign of reciprocity of help, as well as of gratitude. Utang na loob is a commitment to repay one that did the favor.
Hiya (Sense of Propriety)
Hiya is not just being embarrassed or being shameful/ shamed upon. In the Filipino psyche, it all stems from the concept of being proper by conforming to the moral standards that was made by the society. It is a main regulator of behavior in which not only matters is the individual's hiya, but also the hiya of other people and the hiya of the community.
