My draft analysis of Round 1 of the KR Regional Qualifiers got featured as an article on esportsheaven! Check it out :)
KR Regional Qualifier - Round 1
I have always been a big fan of NaJin so this series was really disappointing to me. They had been looking like they were on the up and up recently and JinAir had been struggling even against lower tier Korean teams. The 3 - 0 in JinAirâs favor was surprising on several levels. I wanted to talk a bit about NaJinâs failures in the pick and ban phase during this series. GAME 1 Blue - JinAir (JAG) ----- Red - NaJin (NJF) JAG bans: Azir, Shen, Braum NJF bans: Lulu, TF, Viktor So already we have huge problems in store for NaJin. For starters, Kalista makes it through bans and sure enogh JAG first picks it. Kalista definitely should have been banned over any one of the 3 champions that NJF ended up banning. So letâs get into the wasted bans. As red side, you have a guaranteed counter pick for either Top or Mid. Considering Ggoong has a smaller champion pool and TrAce is so good at playing from behind, it only makes sense for NJF to use their last pick for mid. This pretty much stops any Blue side TF picks on JAGâs part because Ggoong is a great assassin player and can always counter pick with the TP Diana Mid that everyone has been bringing out recently as a hard counter to TF. Can Ggoong actually play Diana? Theoretically it is in his archetype and is a very powerful pick to threaten the TF out with. He should be able to play it and if not he should have been practicing it. TF vs Diana would be a dream come true for NJF because it allows Ggoong to play a strong assassin in the midst of the control mage meta in the Mid lane and have it not be a bad thing. Lulu and Viktor arenât necessarily bad bans but they are certainly not as high of a priority as Kalista. So JAG first picks the Kalista and NJF responds with a blind pick Fiora. Now Iâm all for Duke playing Fiora as heâs a great carry Top laner and Fiora is busted OP right now. However, NJF just struggled against KOO Tigers in the playoffs due to the return of Malphite Top. So the Fiora pick is great in theory but when NJF blind picked it they set up TrAce to play a utility tank that pretty much neutralizes a carry Top. JAG couldnât have asked for a better scenario here. I wouldnât have expected NJF to ban Malphite in the first game because I donât think that would be fair expectations. But they should have at least considered the possibility of TrAce playing Malphite and be ready to have a plan to deal with it. Now to be fair, they could have blind picked Fiora, let JAG pick Malphite, send Fiora Mid, and play something else Top to deal with it. Fiora vs GP mid would certainly have been interesting. The Elise, Alistar, and Ashe picks are all fine here. But then we get to the last pick. NJFâs answer to GBMâs Gangplank was to have Ggoong play LeBlanc... yeahhh.... It was pretty underwhelming. LB has been previously considered a counter pick to Kalista since as long as you time your combo during Kalistaâs hop, it is really hard for her to dodge LBâs damage. However AD Carries typically get a lot more protection in the current meta than they did back when that mentality was popularized. Not to mention that the rest of JAGâs lineup is durable and not very susceptible to a bursty assassin like LB. GAME 2 Blue - NaJin (NJF) ----- Red - JinAir (JAG) NJF bans: Lulu, TF, GP JAG bans: Azir, Elise, Shen Now I said that I wouldnât fault NJF for not banning Malphite in Game 1, but I certainly hold them responsible for not banning Malphite in Game 2 and 3. The TF ban is more justified on the blue side since you donât want GBM last picking it. They drop the Viktor ban for a GP ban, and keep the Lulu ban. Iâm guessing NJF was scared of JAG running a JuggerâMaw variation with TrAce on Lulu and Pilot on Vayne. Lulu ban seems fine for this reason in Game 1 but itâs hard to justify banning it over Malphite in Game 2 when NJF have lost 3 games in a row to Malphite. On the plus side, NJF gets the blue side first pick Kalista. NJF also gets the RekâSai into JAGâs Eve which is always a good thing. However, JAG picks extremely hard engage with Malphite and Ashe. This is problematic for Kalista. Kalista likes a beefy front line to hide behind so that she has time to pump out AoE damage with Hurricane and abuse Rend damage. However, NJFâs front line in this game can do nothing to keep JAG off of Kalista due to the Malphite and Ashe hard engage. JAGâs Viktor and Eve picks also help provide burst damage to follow up this engage with. So by the end of the draft NJF has Maokai, RekâSai, Ryze, Kalista, Thresh. Now if this comp can get to late game then Ryze and Kalista can pump out some serious damage but Ryze mid will inevitably struggle to get to late game especially against GBMâs Viktor. Viktor has earlier power spikes, better pushing power, and more burst damage for mid game skirmishes. Maokai, RekâSai, and Thresh do not provide much supplementary wave clear so the option to stall the game until Ryze gets big isnât really on the table. NJF is risking Kalista being the only source of damage mid game while having no way to ensure she has the freedom to pump out that damage versus the Malphite, Eve, etc. Again, JAG picks up the victory. GAME 3 Blue - JinAir (JAG) ----- Red - NaJin (NJF) JAG bans: Azir, Shen, TF NJF bans: Lulu, GP, Kalista NaJin lets Malphite go through AGAIN. JAG also combos Malphite with the Ashe pick again. NJF gets the Kennen support that has had much success recently. However, instead of pairing it with Lucian as per usual, they decide to go with Sivir instead for spell shields versus the engage. Sivir is okay here in theory but putting Ohq on the scuttlebug ADC seems counter-intuitive. It also means that NaJin doesnât get to abuse the Kennen Lucian combination that had proven so volatile in the past. The other problem here is that NaJin subs Ggoong and Watch out for TANK and Peanut... I think it was a terrible decision to remove the veterans when it mattered the most. Ggoong is very mechanically talented but just needs to be put on the right champions. The LB and Ryze picks in the first two games were terrible ideas. Ggoong has shown competency on Azir and Viktor recently, he has always been one of the best Ahri players in the world and she had begun to resurface competitively, and he should have been picking up Diana. Fiora and GP mid could also fit pretty well into Ggoongâs hands. Ggoong didnât need to be subbed out, he just needed to pick better champions. I blame the NaJin coaches here more so than Ggoong. Peanut didnât perform any better than Watch and his lack of experience showed when NJFâs poorly coordinated invade backfired early game. JinAir ends up picking up Game 3 for a clean 3 - 0 sweep. Credit where credit is due though, JinAir has been practicing really hard and had some phenomenal drafts in this series. If they continue playing with this level of macro strategy, I wouldnât be surprised if they end up beating CJ Entus tomorrow.

Sample Team Comps - Patch 5.14
Iâve been focusing on coaching / analyst work for league and figured Iâd advertise a sample of my notebook for this patch. I mainly work with ranked teams on pick-ban, communication in the work place, and practice structure. Interested in getting a coach / analyst for your team? Just send me a PM.
1.) Burst Engage
TOP - Rumble
JGL - J4
MID - Jayce
ADC - Corki
SUP - Annie
Variations of this comp have been being used since 5.11 when teams were still trying to find the right ADC to fit in. Sejuani was the original jungle in this but fell a bit out of favor recently. J4 synergizes well via trapping enemies on top of the other AoE spells in the comp. On 5.12 and 5.13 this comp was more popular with Ezreal mid but the Runeglaive nerfs shift it back towards Jayce.
2.) Linebackers
TOP - Nautilus / Maokai
JGL - Gragas / RekâSai
MID - Orianna
ADC - KogâMaw
SUP - Alistar / Braum
3 Tanks + 2 DPS has pretty much been the summary of the meta for most of season 5. KogâMaw has resurfaced as an answer to the popular Corki as he has similar power spikes and poke potential but doesnât fall off late game. Basically trading mobility for range and scaling power. But since Kog lacks self peel itâs better to have a ton of peel. Gragas is a bigger tank compared to RekâSai but the void monster has better vision control. This comp has seen variations in every region recently.
3.) The 5.12 God Tier Comp
TOP - Gnar
JGL - Nunu
MID - Azir
ADC - Kalista
SUP - Alistar
While this comp isnât as strong as it was two patches ago due to Kalista and Azir nerfs, it still packs a ton of potent synergy. Gnar can ult into Azirâs wall for big stun plays. Nunu can viably bloodboil Azir or Kalista to increase their DPS. Nunu + Kalista pretty much have 100% execute control over any objective on the map w/ Consume, Smite, and Rend. Kalista throwing Alistar into the enemy team is a great way to start fights. Comp consists of 3 tanks and 2 high dps champions who are also mobile and good at self peeling. This comp is still worth playing but there are more chinks in the armor than on previous patches.
4.) Zone Control (for those itching to play the new GP)
TOP - Gangplank
JGL - Ekko
MID - Viktor
ADC - Sivir
SUP - Alistar / Braum
Viktor + Ekko can throw down snare bubbles and heavily deter enemy advances, cut off choke points, force-path opponents for easy engages, and have good follow up burst damage if any enemies get caught in the traps. Gangplankâs ult fits into this theme and provides good team fighting presence. He can also viably split push due to this compâs ability to wave clear well w/ Sivir + Viktor and disengage with Sivir ult and zoning tools. The upgraded GP ult + Sivir ult also gives insane mobility when needed. If you want to use this comp without GP, Rumble fits just as well into the comp.
5.) Early Roams + Pick Potential
TOP - Maokai / Shen
JGL - Evelynn / Nidalee / Lee Sin
MID - TF
ADC - Sivir / Graves / Corki
SUP - Annie / Alistar / Braum / Thresh / Tahm Kench / Nautilus
Main concept of this comp is have early aggression from the jungler, strong roaming from the support early on, and then global collapses via TF + Top lane TP / Shen ults. Eve works great with this due to her semi-permanent MIA status, and Nidalee and Lee are just great in general for catch potential and early invade pressure. TF has grown in popularity as he can safely roam vs much of the mid lane control mage meta at the moment. He still needs to fear assassin counter picks though and should probably be picked last on red side or at least after the enemy team has already grabbed their mid laner so that there are no nasty surprises. This comp is also a great opportunity to run the new Tahm Kench as he excels at hard engage. This comp was originally designed and ran as a counter to the popular poke meta that was developing in mid between Ezreal, Jayce, Varus, etc. This comp can force fights very well.
I actually enjoy a different variation of this comp the most using Bard Support and Ashe / Caitlyn ADC. Ashe / Cait synergize best with Bard in lane and their long range makes them safe farmers with strong push / freezing potential for when Bard is roaming. Bard + Nid / Lee / Eve can really give the enemy jungler a hard time until the solo lanes hit 6. Though we have not seen the Bard variation of this comp in competitive yet, the core form has been seen in the LCK and LJL.
6.) Zen
TOP - Shen
JGL - Eve / Ekko
MID - Zed
ADC - Corki
SUP - Alistar / Braum
Zed is one of the few assassins trying to maintain a presence in the meta. Shen has grown in popularity and has been seeing international play in the top lane as well as support. He is most commonly paired with Shen so that the main tank has an express pass to the back line of the fight and so that Zed can survive the initial duration when he canât utilize his ultâs shadow thanks to recent nerfs. Zed also has good kill pressure on popular control mages such as Viktor, Azir, and Orianna. He also deals with Jinx and Kog well. Eve / Ekko Jungle and Corki ADC help provide enough magic damage to help balance sources. You can also run this comp with Shen support and Rumble / Fizz top.
7.) 5.14 Juggermaw
TOP - Shen / Lulu
JGL - Nunu
MID - Orianna / Lulu
ADC - Jinx / Kog / Trist
SUP - Janna
Weâve all seen this comp and itâs still lurking around. Orianna adds more DPS to this comp than the previous versions that utilized Lulu Mid. Just make sure you donât get snowballed against too hard early on.
