I love you funny beaver movie
I’m in love with this stupid shirt
pro-tip: don't ever use the sentence "thousands of years" in your worldbuilding unless you really know what a thousand years is like
Quick cheat sheet:
The middle ages were one thousand years ago
I don't know if I need you to tell you this but Jesus was alive 2 thousand years ago during the Roman Empire
3 thousand years ago the Mediterranean and Middle East were recovering from the bronze age collapse. None of the philosophers of Western philosophy (or Eastern for that matter) were born yet
Earliest writing dates roughly to 5 thousand years ago.
Agriculture started roughly 10 thousand years ago
So yes, you can write whatever you like but if you're telling me that an individual dynasty has been ruling since 8000 years ago (HOLA JORGE) I have to wonder if they even had writing back then
To be fair you can find one guy like that in the comment section of most metal bands on youtube
[Image ID: Tumblr tags reading: #Made a character 10.000 years old and then had to sit there thinking 'oh god he's older than metallurgy' #Little old man rambling about how kids these days are all addicted to metal and in His day they only had rock /End ID]
You guys are so hung up on realism in everything. Relax. Have a little suspension of disbelief. Have a little mythic time. Just chill out.
Realism is just another option in writing, not a shackle one must lug around everywhere you take your writing, friends.
I couldn't help but imagine this when I saw Tom Lizard's pose on the poster
A lot of people are misunderstanding Hoppers. No, it's not "pro-corporation" or "pro-violence." Standing up for what's right is good, but you have to be mindful of HOW you do it, because your actions have consequences.
It was crystal clear that Mabel crossed the line several times in the name of what she felt was right, but really was covering her own selfish motives for wanting to save the glade. She harassed Jerry at his own house, regardless of the fact that his elderly mother was living there too. She stole the hoppers tech from her own college professor, leading to a chain of events that got it banned. She messed with nature, and even the animals were telling her not to interfere with predators doing their thing because everyone has to eat. George told her to tread lightly with the council, and she didn't listen. It was only when her rash words endangered Jerry's life that she started to realize that she messed up.
But that wasn't enough. Even when the gang and Jerry were on the run from the birds and Dianne, when lives were literally at stake, when Jerry wouldn't call off the project, she got pissy enough to alert the birds and literally threaten Jerry's life unless he kow-towed to her demands. She didn't even care that she basically screwed them all over. She had to be tied to a chair and be forced to listen to Titus calling her out on all of her actions for it to finally sink in.
And in the end, all that wound up burning down the glade she wanted so desperately to save. The hoppers program was cancelled, and all of the professor's hard work went down the drain. Yes, beltway got cancelled, the glade would probably eventually recover, and the professor was bouncing back with other projects, but the lesson still stands: the burn-it-all-down mentality never works. There are other ways to do things -- they aren't always effective, but they're better than the alternative.
