Chapter 6
Snow crunched loudly under the two young men’s feet as they walked hand in hand down the sidewalk. The streetlights ahead of them illuminated their path. Christmas lights were strung on houses all down the block, reds, greens, whites, and blues filling the night sky with colour. The air was freezing, nipping at the noses of the two and making their warm breath come out as clouds of white fog as they walked along.
“Jesus, Phil, how much farther is it?” Dan whined, “We’ve been walking for ages.”
Phil laughed at his boyfriend, “We’ve only been walking for ten minutes. We walk this distance to the kitchen nearly every day.”
“Not when it’s this bloody cold!” Dan said, pulling his hand away from Phil’s and stuffing it in his pocket, both hands now pressing into his jacket pockets.
“Aw, Dan, come on,” Phil wound his arm through Dan’s elbow and started rubbing his arm in an effort to try and warm him up, “Just one more hill and we’ll be there.”
Dan groaned, “One more hill?! It feels like we’ve already walked up the freaking empire state building!”
“Are you sure you aren’t just grumbling because you’re nervous about meeting my family?” Phil asked gently.
Dan paused for a moment, “Maybe I am a little…”
“Just be your charming Dan Howell self, and they’ll adore you.” Phil leaned over and pecked Dan on the cheek.
“Ah!” Phil yelped, “Your face is freezing!”
“That’s because someone made me walk around outside in the frigid Winter air!” Dan said, laughing at his boyfriend.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry! I don’t remember the walk from the bus stop being so long. Look, we’re here now. There’s my Dad’s homemade reindeer in the front yard.”
Dan let out a burst of laughter, “That’s a reindeer? I thought it was a small dog.”
“Yeah, my dad’s not a very handy person,” Phil said, chuckling, “It does quite look like a dog.”
They approached the door together, their arms still linked tightly. The fluorescent porch light was on, giving much harsher feeling than the soft light of the streetlamps.
Phil pushed the white doorbell, and a soft ding dong sounded from inside the house.
Suddenly, a loud, shrill barking came from inside.
“Your parents have a dog?” Dan asked Phil.
“Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you. He’s really friendly, though. He’s called Teddy. I suggested they call him Winston, but they weren’t sold.”
Dan laughed, suddenly feeling very glad that he had this ridiculous, gorgeous, kind man on his arm.
“Oh, here they are!” A woman’s voice said from inside.
The door swung open, revealing a shorter, older woman with a brown bob.
“Hello, Phil!” The woman said, wrapping Phil up in a big hug. Dan’s arm was left empty, and when Phil looked over at him he could see the anxiety filling him up. It broke his heart.
Once she let go of Phil, she turned to Dan.
“You must be the famous Dan Howell,” she said to him, “Come here, give us a hug. We’ve heard quite a lot about you, young man!”
Phil’s mother enveloped Dan in a hug that was surprisingly big for someone who was so much smaller than him. Initially Dan was startled, but after a moment relaxed when he saw Phil give him a reassuring smile as he unbuttoned his coat and lay his bag on the floor next to him.
“Come in, both of you. You must be freezing, go over and warm yourselves up by the fire.”
As Phil’s mother headed back into the kitchen, Dan and Phil headed into the living room, where there was a small group of men sitting in arm chairs by the fireplace, holding glasses of eggnog and chatting. A few young children ran by them, giggling and throwing Christmas crackers at each other.
“Hi, everybody!” Phil said to the room. This was met with many “Hullo, Phil!”s and “Hi, Philip!”s.
“This is Dan, my boyfriend.”
A few people stood up and came over to the two to shake each of their hands and say hello, and some remained where they were and gave a wave in their general direction. As Phil was greeting everyone, he would glance at Dan when he had a second just to check on him. He knew that he could get very anxious in situations with lots of new people, and he wanted to make sure he wasn’t being overwhelmed. He appeared normal by most standards, a very charismatic, articulate young man, but because Phil knew him so well he could tell he was feeling a little uneasy.
“Dan, do you want to go get something to drink?” Phil asked, holding out his hand for Dan to take it.
“Yeah, sure.” He replied, sliding his hand into Phil’s.
As they walked toward the kitchen, Phil whispered to Dan,
“Are you alright? I can see you getting a bit nervous.”
“Yeah, don’t worry, I’m fine.” he said, squeezing Phil’s hand and giving him a dimpled smile.
Phil smiled back at him, but he wasn’t convinced. He raised his and Dan’s hands and gave Dan’s a quick peck.
“Just let me know if you need anything, okay, love?”
“I will. Thank you.”
With that, the two headed into the kitchen.
---
“The turkey’s ready!” Phil’s mother announced, gathering everyone together and herding them towards the large dining table. It was a beautiful spread - a massive juicy turkey, surrounded by a sea of fresh herbs and vegetables, snow-white mashed potatoes and cream, a bowl of deep red cranberry sauce, and a gravy boat the size of a small woodland creature filled to the brim with piping hot turkey gravy. Just the sight of it all made Phil’s mouth water. His mum was an amazing cook, and one of his favourite things about coming home was getting to sit down and enjoy one of her home-cooked meals. And, of course, visiting with his family. So far everything had been going well - everyone seemed to love Dan, none of the extended family had said anything even slightly homophobic, and Dan seemed to be a little more relaxed. Phil couldn’t wait to sit down to dinner. An amazing boyfriend, a loving, accepting family - what more could a guy ask for?
Once everyone had settled down with their plates of food, chatter began to slowly erupt around the table. The bulk of the noise in the room, unsurprisingly, came from the small, plastic children’s table in the corner of the room. Phil and Dan were seated side by side at the dining room table directly next to it, with their backs facing the children.
“Hey, Dan!” One of the little girls shouted unexpectedly.
Slightly taken aback, Dan turned in his chair toward her. Phil turned along with him, curious as to what was going on.
“My mum told me that you live on the seats,” she said, shoving a rather large spoonful of mashed potato into her mouth.
Dan laughed nervously, “Sorry, what was that?”
“NO, Lilly,” an older looking boy said, “She said he lives on the STREETS!”
“OH! The streets! My mum said you live on the streets.”
Dan went white and looked down at the floor. He was about to get up when Phil laid a hand gently on his leg, a silent cue to tell him it was alright, he was there.
“Dan used to be homeless, but now he lives with me. We both have jobs, a home, and we love each other.” Phil said to the children, taking Dan’s hand and squeezing it as he spoke. He braced himself for what the children would say next.
“Oh,” the little girl said, “Okay! That’s happy. I’m glad about that.”
Phil turned to Dan and gave him a sneaky peck on the cheek, then they both went back to their dinners and the chatter of the adult table.
---
Dan, Phil, and both his parents were all sitting by the fire, watching the crackling and popping of the burning wood. All the extended family had gone home, and Phil was glad. It was really nice to get to see everyone again, he hadn’t in a long time, but he knew that Dan was feeling a lot more relaxed now, and as an introvert needed a break from all the socializing.
“Well,” Phil’s Mum said, getting up from the couch, pulling her husband up along with her, “I think it’s time for bed. Boys, the spare bedroom is all ready for you.”
“Thanks, Mum. Goodnight,” Phil called to them.
“Goodnight, Mr. and Mrs. Lester,” Dan said, rather sleepily, “Thank you for dinner, it was great.”
“You’re welcome, Dan,” Phil’s mum said.
“Come ‘round any time, boys,” Phil’s dad said, “We’re happy to have you both.”
“Thank you,” they both called as the pair headed up the stairs together.
Dan, who had been situated at the other end of the couch from Phil, immediately rolled over to the other side, lay his head in the crook of Phil’s neck and wrapped his arm around his side.
“That was quick,” Phil said cheekily.
“Shut up,” Dan shot back, “I didn’t want to be all mushy in front of your parents.”
“They probably wouldn’t have minded.”
“I know, but I would have just felt weird. I don’t think I’ve ever been comfortable being affectionate in front of adults.”
“Is that because you knew you couldn’t be in front of your own parents?” Phil said, moving his hand up to run his fingers through Dan’s hair.
“I think so, yeah. They weren’t even happy with the idea of me dating girls, let alone guys. They wanted me to wait until I was well out of high school to see anybody. Any time I would talk about a girl who I was friends with or that I had to do a project with at school, the first thing they would ask was, ‘Is she your girlfriend?’ They were really paranoid about it.”
“Do they still not want you seeing anyone now?”
“I don’t know. I don’t care. They’re not part of my life anymore, and they’re not going to be ever again.”
Phil shifted over and brought Dan’s face up to look at his, then spoke.
“If that’s what’s best for you, then that’s what I want.”
“Trust me, it is.” Dan said, then moved in to kiss Phil.
The fire had grown quite small, only a few small embers burning now. The dog lay next to it, his paws tucked near his face, snoring lightly. Dan suddenly broke the kiss with a wide yawn.
“Come on, let’s go to bed. Just let me put the fire out.” Phil said, sliding Dan off of him.
“Phil,” Dan whined, “Come back!”
“I’ll just be a second.”
Phil, ignoring Dan, went about putting the fire out and cleaning up the mantle.
“Alright,” Phil said, wiping his hands on his jeans and turning around to face Dan, “Come on, you, let’s-”
Dan was fast asleep. Phil paused for a moment and smiled, Dan looked so sweet.
“Dan,” Phil whispered, rubbing his arm gently in an effort to wake him.
Dan let out a muffled whine in reply.
“Dan Howell, I cannot carry you up the stairs.”
“You’ve got to,” he said, his face still pressed into the sofa, “My legs don’t work.”
“We both know that I don’t have the upper body strength for that. We both failed at going to the gym regularly, remember?”
“Yeah,” Dan chuckled, rolling to face Phil, “We went literally one time, then decided to go out for burgers afterwards as a reward.”
“In hindsight, not our best idea.” Phil replied, also laughing lightly.
Dan slowly dragged himself up off the couch and started walking slowly towards the stairs.
“He has arisen,” Phil said, following close behind.
“Shut up,” Dan replied.
“You love me.”
“I do. I really do,” Dan turned to face Phil and took his hand in his.
Phil smiled, giving Dan’s hand a squeeze.
“I love you, too.”
With that, they walked up the stairs towards the guest bedroom hand in hand, both stuffed full of food, exhausted, and most of all, content.
When will there be chapter 6 for "When It Gets Cold"? ITS SO GOOD OMG MY HEART. CHAPTER 5 MAKES ME SMILE LIKE A DORK BUT I DONT CARE BECAUSE ITS SO GOOD. Ahem ahem. But yeah. Keep writing! ^•^ <3

hi, this was so lovely to find in my inbox, thank you so much!! I absolutely ADORE the 1975, and I really like the idea! I’m not sure what I’m doing as far as fic writing is concerned currently, but if I decide to start anything new (which I very well might!) this will be first on my list :) <3
Hello everyone!! I’m genuinely surprised there are as many of you still here as there are. Thank you so much for sticking around and supporting me!
I unfortunately dipped out again for another 7 months without any warning, and for that I’m very sorry! Directly after I made the last update post my life became incredible busy very quickly and I genuinely didn’t have any time for fic writing.
I’m currently approaching the end of my senior year of high school, so I may not be able to actually come back and do any more writing (and I may not want to, depending on the circumstance :( )
One thing I would love to be able to do for you guys is try and complete When it Gets Cold! I’m going to take another look at it and try and start writing it again because there have been so many lovely people messaging me about it and asking me for another chapter. I hope you haven’t all forgotten about me, because I’m going to try my best to finish that for you guys!
I apologize for all the uncertainty that comes with my fics and this blog. I’ll try and be more consistent for you all!
Anyway, TLDR, be on the lookout for chapter 6 of When it Gets Cold!

I actually havent been on this account in 7 months because of school etc and ive actually been becoming less and less involved with the phandom in general over the course of the last year
