Love ruined us
Love has wrecked us, as it always does We were so good, so clean Wholesome and unbroken Look at us now, my dear Look what we have become Passionately estranged And entrenched in silence
Love ruined you first You were too beautiful, too grand, too absolute Maybe it got jealous You were swamped, you were drowned It gave and gave until it was too much Until you turned sour Until you were just numb Until nothing was sweet and all was bitter
And then you were ready, not ripe but rotten You succumb to excess From then on you took all and gave none You became Love itself You did all of its work, charming and destroying Like every man in that sort of story Full of pride and blindness Like Narcissus, like Icarus, you were consumed
Love ruined me second It was a long, drawn-out process It was strategized and premeditated I was too curious, too eager, too trusting Love was always promised and always was denied A lifelong of unanswered need An existence full of neglected prayers I was dying of thirst, bleeding and begging But Love gave me nothing It laughed in my face. Laughed and laughed Until I was silent, no longer demanding Until I was all dry, hopeless and resentful Until no one was friend and all were enemies
And then I was ready, not ripe but barren I succumbed to absence From then on I yielded nothing and mistrusted all I became what all women become in that sort of story Deprived and unwanted, brooding and scornful Like Medusa, like Echo, I was turned into stone.
