did the entire fucking UTMV fandom all like. completely miss the part where nightmare was abused, near tortured by, and traumatized by the villagers just for existing, while simultaneously watching them praise and worship dream as they abused him at the same fucking time im being repetitive here because i dont think people actually understand the whole concept that “if you beat a person down just for existing while raising up the person they’re closest to just for existing” it leaves you, you know, kinda traumatized and that’s a form of emotional abuse?

because ive been seeing a lot of stuff lately where people claim nightmare has no motivations for eating the apples other than “for power” or “he’s the bad guy” and like

buddy pal have i got some news for you as a traumatized person

abuse leads to PTSD. nightmare most definitely has PTSD. nightmare was abused.

i dont even like dreamtale canon but you guys cannot even deny this please try to understand mental illnesses and what trauma is and how it can be caused and what it does to a person

yes, we need more people to speak the truth. but on the subject of trauma, I do want to talk about one thing here that is not correct: Dream was not “blind” and he was not praised. Nightmare is not the only one who was pushed around just for existing. sorry for the rambling ahead nbdfhd

everything said about Nightmare here is very much correct and I want to remark that because, while I have not seen people deny he has bullied, I have seen people say it wasn’t that bad, or that he overreacted, or that he indeed did it “for power” and because “he’s gotta be the bad guy” (and/or because of jealousy, which is also wrong as he was never jealous of his brother).

but anyway...

I understand how people can disregard Dream’s side of things since it was not fully portrayed in the original comic, but I’m here to help y’all out with that. here’s the important part: Dream suffered too. a lot. just about as much as Nightmare. he was not “praised” by the villagers, and he never wanted that praise. those people treated him like a machine. he was not any friend of theirs, he was just there to make them happy, to do everything they told him to and never say no. he had no choice. they overwhelmed him with tasks until he fell into the habit of running off to cry where no one could see him. and yet, he still did everything he could to get back to Nightmare, to talk to him, to bring him things. but nothing worked. Nightmare never told him anything, and the villagers never acted strange while they were together. and Dream never told Nightmare what he was going through, either. both of them kept on playing the game of lies to protect themselves and each other.

you see, Dream had no way to know what exactly was going on with Nightmare, no matter how much he tried to figure it out. for one, Dream knew Nightmare preferred to be alone, which is why he stayed away for so long at first. Nightmare never opened up to him. he was always lying, saying that he just tripped. and he did that to protect Dream from the villagers, fearing that they would hurt him too if he stood up to them - this was explicitly stated in the comic. of course Dream got more and more worried the more distant Nightmare grew, but how would he know the real cause of that if he was lied to and always led away when Nightmare was being bullied?

Dream was always trying to cheer him up. he always came back to spend time with him, he brought him books and gifts, he cared, but nothing he did was enough for Nightmare to tell him what was wrong. why is he blind for not seeing something everyone hid from him? especially when you consider the fact that the both of them were children at this time.
