What Was Once a Beacon of Liberalism Before December 17th, 2018, Tumblr is Now a Debased Platform and is Intolerant, Ethnocentric and Puritanical

In a world mired by imagery of violence and hate, we censor what is most beautiful and innocent: the nude human body itself. The human body is the most innocuous and beautiful image of all of us: it is ourselves represented in our most natural, purest form free of inhibitions. Who would be so tasteless and barbaric to glorify violence yet take away images of the natural, nude human body?

Tumblr Before December, 17, 2018 Was a Great Bastion of Liberalism for the NSFW Community

Tumblr had an impressive liberal stance some years ago with regard to its users being able to access so called “NSFW” content. However, due to Tumblr’s relatively new policies of filtering or even outright banning NSFW content, many in the creative arts community can no longer count on Tumblr as a medium for creative nude photography. Tumblr’s new fanatical, prudish policy may deny not only the depiction of naturists, nudists and those who practice “Free Body Culture” (FKK), but its filtering unfortunately also prohibits beautiful imagery of indigenous people from Sub-Saharan Africa and in South America who traditionally live their lives topless or completely in the nude. Moreover, such filtering restricts the expression of the free body culture practiced by many European countries that do not prohibit the nude human body in everyday life.

In order to be inclusive of all creative works in the world of professional photography, Tumblr’s backward neo-puritans need to come back to their senses and revert their sanctimonious NSFW policy to the former glory of tolerance and liberalism that put photographers and their work first and above intolerant, censorious and irrational tendencies of religious zealots.

Further, in defense of the greater world of art, nude human figures are the prominent features of classical and neoclassical sculpture and paintings. Without the ability of photographers to share photos and other depictions of the nude human form, they are at a loss in being able to celebrate the nude human body that is a fundamental centerpiece in classical artworks. Indeed, the first models that served as representations of such classical artworks were nude human volunteers and without nude models to be photographed, shared or emulated, there would be no classical art to base upon.

It is high time that social media companies cease prejudices against nude photography, pornography and other works depicting the nude human body, especially because such policies of filtering NSFW from media platforms hinders the work to promote body positivity, acceptance and such policies discriminate against the livelihoods of indigenous peoples, naturist and nudist communities. And if Tumblr keeps appeasing to the prudes of the internet, its user base will continue to flock to more popular media platforms like Reddit, where users have long been able to post NSFW content. Tumblr’s user base will further erode as the platform continues its trajectory away from its niche markets and into irrelevance.

For the betterment of the professional art community, to be inclusive of the diverse many cultures of humankind, and to utterly survive as a social media platform, Tumblr should return to its open-minded roots by allowing “NSFW” photography to be searched, accessed and shared once again as it once did before prior to the egregious and intolerant ban of NSFW content that took place on December 17, 2018. A reversal of this ban will allow the art world to flourish once again on Tumblr, uninhibited by prejudiced and discriminatory attitudes toward the nude human body. Such a reversal will also reintroduce the fair treatment of the nude human form as the truly beautiful work of art that it is.
